QUOTE(rainsplit @ Aug 22 2013, 02:44 PM) Anybody can explain does o/taking using lower gear cause higher engine ram?? Is it more obvious for lower cc cars or higher cc cars don't have this? Afraid i might spoil the engine/gearbox by doing so frequently..sometimes need to test the pickup juga.... I only know why low gear will cause higher RPM. This is because in a car, one gear is fixed, one gear in change-able. The change-able is your gearbox's gear. The theory is like a bike with gears. When you start pedaling from stagnant, you need to go to the largest gear, ie gear 1, you need to pedal faster (higher engine combustion rate, higher RPM). Once you have achieved momentum, you slowly increase the gear ratio and ultimately gear 5 (smallest gear). At that stage you pedal less right, hence why lower gear has higher RPM. Staying on one low gear too long is unhealthy, proning to wear for that gear. Don't ask if it is not recommended run on highway too often because of constant use of highest gear.

Its normal when downshift makes the engine ram then..but when over taking in manual from 6gear >5 then > 4 to get the boost i will go to 3rd quickly then up again bcz sometimes just want to past the next vehicle faster...the engine sounds is noisy & stressed ..i wonder your 2.0 is the same??

This is what I observed. Normally when I pass cars by downshifting gear from 6th to 4th at 100km/h, the rpm will raise from 2100 RPM (or so) to maybe 2800 RPM. No strain. I don't feel the strain at least. Maybe the difference between 2.0 and 1.6.
