I'm interested but I'm waiting to see whether Google will release any SDK for Chromecast. Also I need to see how the streaming method works.

The Google Cast API allows for many possibilities. I'm not surprised if developers manage to add the cast button to video players on Android. Devs are picking at the SDK at the moment.

That is not true. It can stream to any device on the network, including the phone itself. I can
also use it to stream movie to my WDTV Live from my PC using the phone.

but of course, it can't stream from online services.

I think it's something like this:

Device act like remote control only.Chromecast get & display content from internet or cloud as some people say.
Biggest difference with other Android dongle is Chromecast cannot stream videos directly from device.

i still confused with this chromecast, does it work like the 'throw' function in sony product? 'throw' basically display whatever media we play on the tab or phone to the compatible tv. but i believe the tv need to have a wifi function.

ok for example, currently my lcd tv no wifi function, if i used this chromecast attached to my tv, will i able to do the throw function from my sony tablet?

Think of the Chromecast as having a Youtube player for your TV. It pulls content from the cloud, as instructed by your smartphone/tablet. Nothing is loaded from your device. In short, no display mirroring, for now.

But since the device is open to development, and actually has it's own hotspot (as shown in initial setup), I'm not surprised if display mirroring becomes a feature in the future.

never buy a product base on the 'potential' it has, or a promise for bug fix and update.

invest in something that already proven to work. laugh.gif

i am wondering if it can stream google+,
i have tons of photos that i wish to share on the big screen with my family.

Agreed with what you said.
This device got potential. Obviously it's not a finished article.
If I were a buyer, i will buy it when it started to fulfill those potentials.

Overall a nice device, worth supporting since its relatively cheap
35usd approximately rm 110

But it's not for sale here. If go through garage sales seller,
Price become rm 200 then really not worth it consider its limited function.

Too bad, have to pass on this one.

eBay even worst, look at the delivery fee,
Almost double up the already doubled price to 300+

I might as well walk in to any apple store and buy the Apple TV instantly for rm349 doh.gif

Things from eBay need to wait one month to arrive...

i was excited when knowing about this little device. But, the "throwing" function is similar with youtube leanback which i'm currently use, the only advantage is you can throw any multimedia content from chrome browser.

Been searching for reviews.
This is the best I've seen.
Awesome video, very detail explanation and even got Q&A session at the back which answer most FAQ

At the end of video got a trick to make it stream local content from your laptop also.
I feel like getting one.

Everything works as advertised.

One trick is to load the .mp4 into chrome and then share the tab to the chromecast.

But delivery from US and profit for the seller for rm 60

170 suddenly feels like an ok price.

To me I think better off to get Android TV stick as it is a standalone device which it can do much more things than ChromeCast can do.

Pricing wise not that much different from ChromeCast.

very strong potential further enhance features via 3rd party apps support such as phone to chromecast, cloud to chromecast, etc... many interesting feature or new idea will continue pop-out from devs like Koush, but they sure ack. the power limit of chromecast as spec listed:

- SoC: Marvell 88DE3005-A1, Single Core
- RAM: 512 MB (Micron MT41K256M16HA-125:E)
- Storage: 2 GB (Micron MT29F16G08CBACA)
- OS: based on Chrome OS

although is much less powerful than any regular Android TV stick that we already see long time ago source from china market, but because chromecast is from google and attract many top dev contribution. anyway, diff ppl diff taste; some ppl prefer hardware spec first but apps & update support are more important for certain ppl.

Just received the Chromecast yesterday. First Impression is very convenient just cast what i am watching in youtube from table or phone to TV. Quality of video is very good if the video is HD. I tried to play the MP4 1080 from Chrome Browser to chromecast and the performance is bad. 720p below are working well without lag. overall, loving it.

Been searching for reviews.
This is the best I've seen.
Awesome video, very detail explanation and even got Q&A session at the back which answer most FAQ

At the end of video got a trick to make it stream local content from your laptop also.
I feel like getting one.

Thanks for the video, didn't expect that a cheap $35 dongle can do so many things,BTW I placed my order from Dark Devon already biggrin.gif

I made my placement from another seller.
But still have to wait long long.

Cyanogenmod developer koush dutta, not sure the spelling of his name,
Anyway, that guy manage to make every app that produce video or audio castable using chrome cast.
Awesome job.

Just received mine. Having problem connecting it to the router. I'm on Maxis Home Fibre, using the bundled Thomson TG784n router. Anyone can help? I have enabled UPnP and Multicast. Cannot find the setting for IGMP.

I dusted off the old streamyx router (with TM interface), and that one connects well.

EDIT: Gave up. Used the streamyx router as a bridge, and set up from there. All done. Definitely an issue with the thomson router.

hey guys, just got myself a chromecast too. Any of you managed to get it to show netflix? I managed to get netflix on my laptop's chrome via mediahint, but it son't cast, even the cast tab mode, because its using silverlight.

Googling says need to use DD-WRT to force forward the DNS, but it seems like I will loose HyppTV if I flash DD-WRT on my dlink router. Any other options?

Oh yeah, for those of you who are comparing this with android usb stick, the difference of this is that the chromecast is built for sharing, in that anyone in the house with any device, can stream content to the chromecast, compared to a android usb stick, where if you want to load content, you need to login as the user first. Just say YouTube, I can load youtube on my phone, checked the "Recommended For You" section, and just cast, a friend with iPhone came over, and he can do the same. With android usb stick, will need to see the youtube title, and search for it again.

I have problem connecting to the unit after using for about an hour via dlna, then it refuse to connect anymore even after reset.

I have FreeOTT as well, can use Miracast now, but there is some problem with HDCP protection sad.gif and the dlna function is too slow. anyway, it is free, so not much to complaint there, hope that the future firmware will solve the problem.

They have free giveaway promotion every now and then, you can get more details here
https://www.facebook.com/Freeott?flyingspag...timonster=br_tf

Still curious about they hype for chromecast, will test it out when it is here.

so far the best device for me to broadcast content from my mobile device (Android via dlna & Apple Devices via Airplay) to TV is still Apple TV

Just received mine as well. Netflix doesn't work with chromecast.
However, i found a guide from Xda Developers on how to access Netflix without using VPN. Gonna try it tonight hmm.gif

Besides that, I'm unable to play my local videos on Chrome. Did I miss something besides drag and drop to chrome browser? Perhaps, the new update for ChromeCast disable it.

if I drag and drop a movie file to my Google chrome browser I will be able to watch it on my TV...
Just a question....if I mute the volume on my browser will the audio still be heard on my TV...
I taught of putting a browser of cartoon for my kids and let them watch from the TV and i watch some thing else on the desktop...

I tested before playing a video from Newstand. The video is ok, but audio stutters. Guess for showing pics its ok but not for videos.

Anyone of you put a chromecast in a Sound Amp or Sound Bar?

Netflix is the main reason I got chromecast. You will need the unlocator/unblock.us service though, I signed up unlocator.

Then you will need to follow the instructions here:

I am using Asus rt12 cheap router. Just need to use the static routes for Chromecast to work. Don't need to flash with custom firmware or anything like that.

as I understand this method of getting netflix to work here in Malaysia is by using the Unlocator. However this only free for 7 days. Are there any other methods which are free?

Yeah, unlocator, should be faster than the VPN method.

Not aware of any other free methods. Both DNS and VPN services need to pay.

There's no problem to get DNS, the problem is chromecast internal IP's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 you have to block them, otherwise netflix will not be displayed specially with unifi stupid router.

Google Play Movies & TV
ES Chromecast [A plugin of ES File Explorer]
LocalCast

Pick one. I'm using ES Chromecast plugin. The ES File Explorer supports opening network shared folder and files, so you can stream your shared video from your computer to TV using your phone as remote. smile.gif

anything that you can't cast from apps, you can use cast screen (mirror your phone). As long your phone is always on charging that's fine. I always download movie from my phone then cast it.
Even sometimes i play & cast movie from NAS drive through ES Explorer

I found that ES Explorer Cast plugin not so reliable for me. (tested on Nexus 5 & Xperia Z3 Compact)

i believe the chromecast apps itself can cast the screen. but it could be device dependent. i could not get that to work on my Note 2.

Yeah, netflix is the reason why I got chromecast. Now I have the Sony Android TV, and can run netflix from there, so don't need the chrome cast anymore. Android TV's netflix also requires less "hacking" on the router for using unlocator. And the best thing with Android TV vs chromecast is, to pause, I don't need to find my phone, press power button, unlock, then pause. Just pick up the remote control and press Pause. hehe.

KDL-50W800C. Dont need the 4k, so get the cheaper one without 4k.

One thing chromecast still beats Android TV is the backdrop. This Android TV doesn't have backdrop support for the Google Photos.

Hmm, I heard that you can only cast to your Chromecast if they are both connect to the same network, ie your home WiFi.

Problems is the Chromecast will be locked into 1 network on registration, ie the first time you connect.

Have not tried myself, its what I read from other forum.

Other sifu can elaborate.

Hi guys, I got a question,

As I'm away from home now and unable to test, I can only count on forum's help :')

So if I cast a show from my Mobile phone and connect a earpiece/bluetooth headset to my Mobile phone, will I be able to listen to whatever that's supposed to play on the TV?

Ultimately, I want to watch movie casted on my TV but listen through my earphone/bluetooth headset, while being a distance away from my TV. Thanks.

Yes, when you movie is playing there is a function "route audio to device". I have used it before, works fine with the headphone

I have a Sony TV which runs the Android TV platform that have Chromecast embedded.

The things that I usually on my TV:
Google Play Movies
Google Play Music
Netflix
Spotify
YouTube

I believe some of the above is also available in Samsung Smart TV, but I feel Samsung Smart TV platform is running a loosing game, coz the reach is more for developers to develop for Chromecast rather than Samsung Smart TV platform.

Not sure. I think it's restricted by the AOTG app itself.

anybody using a female to female HDMI head to attach their Chromecast to their existing HDMI cable?

my TV HDMI sockets are difficult to reach at the back and its wall mounted. I already have a HDMI cable attached at the moment but since it is the male type, i thought i can use a female to female head to connect it to the Chromecast

Chromecast does support mirroring.
Just when press the 'Play' button, there is an error.

Error 101, if i am not mistaken. (HyppTV)

I use my Lenovo P2 phone super cast to my Samsung smart TV. Whatever on my phone screen is mirrored to the tv. I can stream Astro Go App on my phone and watch on my TV.at same time. Even got option to blank the phone screen to save battery, while Astro continue to play on the Tv.

To use Chromecast, the TV don't have to be Smart TV or Internet capable right? Because I plan to use it for my kids room where I have installed small non-smart TV. All this while I had to download videos from Internet sources to be played at the TV.

Also, do the Wifi connection that is used for the Chromecast and media device (phone/computer) to connect, must have Internet connection? Because I have read that Wifi connection can be established without using Internet connection.

Appreciate if anyone with experience can help me on this.

Don't need Smart TV, the only thing that needs to be connected to the internet is the dongle.

Wifi connection without internet can be done on the old Chromecast but not the new one. The updated software fixed the loophole.

But if you insist on using witthout internet, its half possible through screen mirroring and mobile hotspot which only use internet data from your phone or tablet.

Appreciate if anyone with experience can help me on this.

My chromecast flickers (sound and video) randomly.
So far, I have tried
- putting into other HDMI ports.
- changing cables , power adapters.
- factory reset. This works for a while but problem come back after 1-2 hours.
I googled and found quite a lot of people having this issue in the forum. All without real proper resolution. Their support seem to blame it to compatibility between chromecast and TV. Anyone else have this issue here in Malaysia ?

Hello all

I've been the Chromecast for years and love it to bits. I've been plugging it direct to the TV so any sound is coming out from the TV.

I have a Sony Soundbar so I'm just wondering if you can connect the Chromecast to the Soundbar instead so that I can get better sound?

Thanks

I can confirm that it works so this is all kinds of awesome. Only complain is that my zaman batu soundbar doesn't have a USB port so had to use the one from the TV. Still works but not so neat now.

Anyways, does anyone know if the Astro Njoi Now app works with the Chromecast?

Yeah which I assume is because they're scared of losing business from their other businesses (IPTV, Satelite, etc.).

However, I feel that they're actually just restricting themselves and not being open to a potential lucrative revenue stream. Personally, I'd subscribe to Astro if the Njoi app could cast out. As it is, I subscribe to Beinsports and Rugbypass mainly because these services offer the cast option.

I have both the Chromecast and Fire Stick. IMO, the Fire Stick is clearly superior and can also do casting with same ease like the Chromecast.
