You just need patience I believe. You are doing a great job already!! Looks like you are training your dog well.
I have taken my dog to beginner/kindergarten training class. We were taught these two commands in addition to other commands - 'WAIT' and 'STAY'. Wait means just for a short while like wait before something else. Wait before crossing the road, wait for food, etc. For 'STAY', you need to first start slow. Tell you dog to sit or lie down. Then give the command 'STAY'. Slowly back away but not to the point, your dog will want to follow. In the beginning just wait for a few seconds and go back to your dog and praise her. Give her a treat. Slowly increase the time and distance away from your dog but always go back to her and give her praises/treats. What you want to associate with 'STAY' is to let your dog know, you will always go back to her. You have to give your dog the confidence that 'STAY' means you will go back to her and she is supposed to wait until you come back. 'WAIT' just means waiting temporary before going with you. Just keep doing that and I believe you will be successful. I am going to enroll for a second level class next Monday so I'll share more if I learn something new on 'STAY'. I am also still working on 'STAY' with my dog. But like you, when there are many people around, she gets excited also and will not listen. The trainer told me it will get better as she gets older. It also helps if you take your dog out a lot to meet people. She will get used to new people and will not be as excited. I am also working on taking my dog out more. I can see improvements compared to the beginning as she becomes more accustomed to seeing many people. Good luck. RB |
