Just bought a Plextor mSATA SSD but it doesn't come with the small screws to secure the card after plug into the mSATA port. The seller said it normally comes with the laptop. Is it true?
Can I just assemble the mSATA SSD without securing it with screws? |

Hi guys,
Please recommend me a reliable 2.5" SSD for my ultrabook. Planning to upgrade from my normal 500GB SATA HDD. Not sure whether to take 128gb or 256gb... Thanks. |

QUOTE(horns @ Sep 6 2014, 04:39 PM) if you're not greedy for performance, mainstream ssd's should work fine for you. (for instance, crucial m500/mx100, plextor m6s, samsung 840 evo) in fact any decent ssd's in the market will most probably do very well for you. I was comparing Intel 530 240GB and Samsung 840 Evo 250GB. Both price are around the same but Intel one got 5 years warranty. Does that means Intel is much reliable?these mainstream drives have 3-year warranty. |

QUOTE(horns @ Sep 9 2014, 11:35 AM) Yeah. I had read the article regarding the amount of writes affecting it's lifespan. My primary job is to run virtual images in my machine. Guess it will not put too much burden. |

QUOTE(chocobo7779 @ Sep 12 2014, 10:03 PM) But Asus by default choose ScanDisk for laptop with SSD models...http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-AsusPr...ok.93176.0.html Am considering Intel 530 Series 240GB or Sandisk Ultra II 240GB now...both are same price This post has been edited by activexxx: Sep 12 2014, 10:09 PM |

QUOTE(horns @ Sep 13 2014, 02:00 AM) there is no such things as compatibility based on brand. it's just asus appointed sandisk to produce oem ssd for them. Yes. Mine is a ultrabook. Can fit for thickness 7mm. So, my final choice will be Intel 530i have a g55 that i put a raid0 with a plextor m5m and a vertex 4. don't bother about thickness of ssd (7mm or 9.5mm) if you have a non-ultrabook laptop. both should fit. between intel 530 and sandisk ultra ii, my choice will be intel 530. (it's personal preference) I plan to configure the SSD as my primary drive (C:). Is there any source where I can refer to for this setup? What RAID should I set? Appreciate if other ppl can share their experience too. |

Actually, my ultra book can also support msata but it can only fit those mini msata SSD which I can't find in the market here. Online purchase also way too expensive.
I only use one SSD at the moment...guess raid is not required. Many thanks for the advise here. |

QUOTE(horns @ Sep 14 2014, 12:08 AM) oh. yeah half-sized msata ssd is rare :/ this is why i think it's important to check the internals before new purchase, so as to prevent getting this kind of upgrade inconvenience. That's why I had jumped to the gun too early. You can check on my thread here for reference and also sharing my experience to other ppl...https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2992343&hl= |

QUOTE(horns @ Sep 15 2014, 12:38 PM) oh :/ Yes. I also plan to tape the msata ssd under the laptop but I noticed that it's too extreme until I cant put my cover in yeah most manufacturers only tell you generic things, like your laptop can fit msata ssd. what they don't tell you is that you need a particular type for your laptop, while there are many form factors for msata ssds. (this has happened before. everyone in a forum who owned asus g46 bought full-sized msata ssd's for upgrades, but later found out that they actually needed the half-sized one. eventually they did all sorts of things, including taping the msata ssd to the laptop in order to secure and use it) referring to the 3rd image in your post, the size of your ssd should be like the wifi card (intel) just above the msata slot. i think you should also mention your laptop model. It's an ASUS BU400A model. |
