Ok thanks, asides from enabling AHCI and asking Bios to boot straight from SSD, is there anything else I need to do?

as in how should i disable defragmentation, etc

Major issue! yawn.gif
I've encountered some problem with my 2 year old Plextor M5S SSD.
The Sequential Read/Write speed I used to have a few weeks ago was 512/268MB/s

And these few days I've realized that my PC was a little lagging and I couldn't found the source.. So I just whip out the trusty Samsung Magician to check the performance, and to my surprise.. THE SEQUENTIAL READ SPEED DROPPED BY 50%!! THE HORROR!! even the official Plextools was showing me the same result.

Are my ol'SSD dying?! Can it be fix? or I have to RMA it? :'(
Any help is pretty much appreciated.

Oh btw, what do you guys recommend for a 120/128GB SSD? Hope it's not a Plextor, because I can't take another jump scare.

Using Samsung test on competition drive can be biased. Use Crystaldiskmark or AS SSD.

Of course I dint test it with just one benchmark tools, I did also tested it using Plextool as well, same results. :\

Update:
Just look at it man.. I can't bear to watch :'(

Did you ever enable TRIM command after you install Windows?

*By default it should be enabled, but there are times it can be disabled due to other components.
*
Plextool shows that the TRIM is enabled.
I've even check it using cmd using command:
CODE
fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

By the way, I've updated the firmware to 1.05 (previously 1.03) and the results are still the same.

Now im just wondering that will speed degradation issue can be accept for RMA.

Ssd performance will degrade over time, especially the used capacity is over 50%. Over provisioning and sufficient time for garbage collection can help but eventually you will need to do a secure erase once in a while to get back the speed.
*
I thought those issues only affect SandForce Controller.. yawn.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Feb 14 2015, 10:45 PM)
no. all ssds have this because this is about how nand flash works.

when a file is deleted, the process doesn't delete all the file data. there will be partially filled blocks that are not cleaned. note that the trim command only ask ssd to remove file data when it's deleted, but it doesn't force the cleanup operation to these partially filled blocks. to mitigate the issue, garbage collection is used to do this, by looking for partially filled blocks in the ssd, and clearing them to make free space. over provisioning is also important i this case to prevent performance degradation, by giving free space to the controller to do gc.

usually secure erase will reset everything to the factory state. (well, close to i should say)
*
I hope you're right, I wish you're right. I've just erase everything and did a fresh install, and the results is the same.

all hope is lost, in the hospital you go~

Now then, could you guys recommend me a good price/performance SSD please? smile.gif

Hey guys, I've made some research on my own and I made a list.
1. Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
2. Crucial M550 128GB
3. Intel 530 Series 120GB

For these three items above, which are the best? Or you guys have any other better options please let me know. smile.gif

Scrap the first one off...  The drive has a yet to be fixed read speed bug (even though a fix by Samsung is applied).... sweat.gif
Though my 840 EVOs have yet to see any slowdowns... sweat.gif

The Intel 530 would be my choice, or if you really have the cash to burn, the 840 PRO/850 EVO would be my choice. icon_idea.gif
*
Yeah, I've read about the issue on the 840 EVO as well, such a shame. I want to just grab the Intel 530 and just be done with it, but the SandForce controller they're using just made me stop and re-consider.

I've read tons of complaints years ago, something about BSOD issues and other major flaws.

oh that's bad. can you share with us your usage? also, did you do op? how many % of the total space for op if you have done that? did you do other ssd optimizations? did you use ram disk or ram cache? i wonder why no one has expressed this short-life problem before. i am using 2x plextor m5pro xtreme for 2 years plus, 512gb, latest firmware, 15% op. no issues. i suspect system setup and usage contribute to the problem, but you will never know.

of your 3 choices, intel 530 is a good buy because of its longer warranty period. crucial m550 is newer.

*
I did some basic optimization before using it 2 years ago, and I don't know what's "op", so that's a no. And as the matter of fact, I did use a licensed RamDisk, but I don't see why it'll affect the read speed.

By referring to Plextool, the drive only have about 4.14TB write/ 6.79TB read. :\

A friend of mine told me about website and how he get some awesome deals, and at the same time he told me about the SSD on sale. Went there take a look myself, and found out RM50 discount voucher can be use if the purchase is more than RM150.

So without hesitation, I bought it, straight away. rclxm9.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Feb 16 2015, 10:57 AM)
sorry i shouldn't refer your case as 'short-life', i should say 'speed-drop'. op is over provisioning, putting certain amount of unallocated free space at the end of your ssd. if you relocated your temp folders and web cache to it, this method saves a lot of writes to the ssd. yes it doesn't affect ssd's read speed.

based on this review (http://www.anandtech.com/print/6090/plextor-m5s-256gb-review), the gc part should be fine for m5s. by the way your ssd is actually still very healthy based on the total writes (if compared to tbw of 72tb). one last thing, did you swap sata port before? it looks like a sata 2 speed.
*
Nah, i din't swap any ports for months, but yeah I've just realized that it was running on 3.0GB/s, which I assumed it's SATA II speed.

yeah it's sata ii speed. one more thing to check is the sata cable.
*
I dont really think it's the cables problem hmm.gif
I din't change nor even touch the cables for so long, and it was running on 5xxMB/s all the time till this month.

But still, I'll look into it..

do you made any bios update? or maybe you can check the sata setting in bios.. also you can try update to the latest chipset..
*
Nah, No BIOS update, and I'm using an ol'Z68 mobo, I doubt there'll be any chipset update for this dinosaur.

And again, I'll test the SSD on other PC, to see how it goes.

Welp, apparently switching to SATA III port fix the prob :\
Now im running on 500MB/s read 214MB/s write.. odd..
