Hi guys, I think it's high time I plan to get an SSD (this Saturday, 7th December) to run my OS, applications and etc.

I'm planning to get a Minimum of 240Gb SSD, but now the question is which one?
Samsung EVO 240Gb or Intel something something. [Yeah I don't know what to get]

My criteria that should hopefully be met is, value/price, performance, reliability, after sales services = such as RMA, warranty, etc.
===============
Now my system is running on RAID mode, with 3 HDDs, 1 HDDS(A) for OS, and 2 HDD(B and C) is raided 0 together for data....

Will it be hard if i were to replace HDD(A) as a normal data drive swapping it with the SSD? as in would it be a difficult process?

Thanks smile.gif

Lyn forumer mostly recommend Intel SSD, so you could not go wrong with it.
For cloning OS partition to SSD, you should trim your OS partition(and remove junk) before cloning, like moving the programs to HDD, unless your OS partition is as large as the SSD capacity.
Cloning software i'd recommend you Acronis True Image, http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119
It support cloning large capacity HDD to SSD, while other free cloning software could not do it.
And also support partition resizing/editing before cloning.
*
Thanks, I don't think I plan on cloning, but I may though, Yeah i've heard of Acronis before...

But my question was which SSD to get between Samsung and Intel... majority chose Intel, but which Intel to get?
And since may said i need to set to ACHI mode before doing anything? But I've already have a Raid0 system...

Help..

I been using the Intel 520 series for almost 5 months, no issue whatsoever

is pretty reliable and fast but the price is kind of expensive compare to other brand.

you can go for the latest Intel 530 series instead if budget allow.
*
Btw, where can I find any Intel SSD products man? >.<.
I just went to almost the whole of Low Yat Plaza, but none of them have the Intel 520/530/535 idk? some of them even said that it's kinda obsolete or something to that tone... I guess I'm stuck with the Samsung 840 EVO 250GB? or? :/

yeah those are some of the apparent advantages of a ssd over hdd. imo just take advantage of their strengths: ssd for OS and apps/games (more reads); hdd for storage (more writes).

another thing that i believe is useful for a computer, if you have abundant amount of ram's (like 16gb or more), is to use ram disk. this one helps a lot.

What's a Ram disk?

Bit the bullet, got myself a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB for RM620 from ViewNet! Good deal, or ok deal or so-so deal? Lol.

Next challenge, migrating data and installing/reinstalling the SSD into my rig with Win7.

Doubts:
I Should be leaving the Sata Mode on my Bios to "Raid" instead of "IDE/ACHI" right? Since I have another pair of WD RE4 Black 1.0TBs in Raid0 as a Data drive? smile.gif

FOr SSD, set to AHCI mode. You only set Raid mode when u plan to do raid setup for them with more than two drives.
Since the WD drives are ady in raid mode as u set, just leave it unchange.
*
If I set it to AHCI mode, I would believe that I'll not be able to detect my Raid0 data drives. Hence the reason why I had to change my Bios settings to "RAID" mode, and tweaked the windows registry to be able to boot it up in RAID mode from the previous AHCI mode before I added my Raid0 Data drives....

Is it possible? On my AMD mobo, after set to RAID mode, you can't change it back back to IDE/AHCI without breaking the RAID array or bsod upon boot sweat.gif
It's not necessary force to use AHCI mode, as RAID support AHCI functions, but no hot-swapping support; also upgrade SSD firmware will be a little bit hassle, depends on SSD brands.
*
I'm also having that issue, that's why I had to edit the registry of my OS for my Drive C and D to be booted up on RAID mode to support my Drive G (which in a RAID0 config)... >.<

RM590:

https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=2435838&hl=

Anyways, was that after discount? Usually for Viewnet, there is some discount (they have to check with the computer)
*
Darn.. they get a profit extra of RM30... their List price was RM659... oh wells. smile.gif Thanks for the price check! smile.gif Will bookmark that page!

So now your OS mobo can use AHCI + RAID? sweat.gif
My SSD is stuck with the RAID driver now, i have 2 RAID 0 arrays so cant use AHCI, i dont see any benefits by using it cause i dont hot-swapping, upgrading firmware on my Plextor SSD work without OS(offline updating FTW) so SATA mode is not important, but i lose the ability to check the SMART status of my drives sweat.gif
*
Well... technically to my understanding, we can use either AHCI or RAID... I guess I'm having the rough setup as yours...
But to my understanding, regardless if we're using RAID mode without actually raiding the drives, the unraided drives would be automatically set to AHCI la. smile.gif So should hget the SMARTness nonsense biggrin.gif lol
