Weird is the SSD is not common use in laptop, most of the laptop still using 5400rpm HDD. Only Asus commonly use HDD+SSD hybrid in their Vivobook series.

Thanks for quick respond. Yes. I got an old PC that running Old Intel Duo Core CPU. Recently my old Samsung 500GB HDD are getting error and ask me to backup or repair etc. So decided to get an cheap SSD to speed up the performance and swap the HDD as secondary storage.

Any cheap 80GB or lower SSD to recommend me? I don't think I need 120GB as my 500GB can't even use reach 50GB sweat.gif Is for my parents browsing and surfing purposes.

Anything between 60~120GB is not worth the price right now, unless you're seriously on budget, 120GB can be have for under RM300 for most known brand.
Also, SSD has a weakness, available space below 15% will incur some performance hits and pretty much noticeable when writing data (saving documents, shutting down OSes ex. Windows)
60GB, if you can find, is around RM200? Topup around RM100 more to double... sweat.gif And the performance is also better, the sweet price range now is 250GB but that's probably still high for some, RM4xx~5xx hmm.gif
*
Hmm.. Yeah.. I do aware of the SSD price for 120GB is around RM250-300 range, like Plextor/Intel/Samsung.

Because I was thinking, if I just get the WD Caviar Blue 500GB was like RM150++, why not get a SSD with the price range. hmm.gif

Erm, HDD is... bigger space? Totally different category, can't compare. sweat.gif
*
Uhm... Nope. I'm looking for speed/performance since I don't even use more than 50GB, and somemore got external HDD. So that is why I was thought of getting 80GB SSD. Only if I can find second hand of 120GB SSD at RM200+ whistling.gif

hm.. even if someone bought the drive they are very likely unable to answer your question. it involves a teardown of ssd that is likely to have its warranty void. i am not sure if there is a tool for you to check the exact nand flash type also.
*
horns
Maybe they could just the SSD benchmark to run the read/write speed to find out is it have been stripped down? hmm.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Sep 29 2014, 02:28 PM)
well.. as per kingston's previous explanations, they will likely to put in something that can run as fast as toshiba nand to meet the specs. benchmarking read/write speeds cannot prove that nand flash is from toshiba.
*
put in something? hmm.gif hmmmmm...... I read an article that someone manage to decoded the batch serial number to identify the Kingston Nand is made by Micron or Intel or Toshiba.

QUOTE
The current Kingston part number for the flash memory in my V300 is FT64G08UCM1-27.

Kingston does not publish identification data about their flash memory. I had to check several flash memory databases in China. According to the Chinese sites all current Kingston flash memory starting with the FT64G08UCM1- are from Micron. The problem I ran into is the last two digits of the part number. It is a newer higher number that is not yet in any of the databases. There is a possibility it might be TLC memory. I can't be certain.

In the first technical reviews published in late 2102 and early 2013 the Kingston part number was FT64G08UCT1-8B. I can't match it to any of the current Chinese flash memory databases. The current Kingston part numbers for Toshiba flash memory start with FD and FQ and there are some of both versions that are followed by 64G08UCT1- so it is highly likely the original memory was manufactured by Toshiba.

I have figured it out. The manufacturer of the wafer used to make the flash memory is identified by the last letter just before the 1- in the Kingston part number:

M = Micron
N = Intel
T=Toshiba

The Chinese databases are extremely consistent about that.

Kingston and other memory companies do not actually buy the flash memory chips. Instead they purchase the large wafers. They use the large wafers to manufacture the actual chips which they then validate.

exactly. the codes mentioned are 'printed' on the flash chip.

that means you need to take the covers off and check the nand flash on the pcb board.

Oh man.. means we can't figure it out inside is it Toshiba Nand or not without purchase it and unscew it. doh.gif Any other way to work around how to figure it out? hmmm... hmm.gif

yeah i think so.

manufacturers send (usually free) samples to reviewers for review purposes. maybe that's why they can do whatever they want, including super stress tests, and total teardown without worrying about warranty. if they are like us, buy stuff with hard-earned money, i don't think they are willing to do that also.

by the way, there are plenty of better options for you to choose from. why not just skip all the headache and pick others?

Problem is, I can't find some cheap SSD that is small capacity like around 80GB. Budget is RM160 and below.

Purpose is, I found an old HP mini 210 (2010 old of Netbook), I decided to swap it with SSD and try to stress test it and see how the performance. If no good, I can take the SSD and put into my another 2008 year old of Desktop that using by my dad which the HDD currently almost dead, he use to watch movie, so High capacity is not necessary for him or even me as well.

What is your solution for my case?

ok. you should know that performance are different based on ssd capacity. (ssd with smaller capacity usually runs slower). the smallest kingston v300 ssd should be 60gb.

my solution.. top up 90 bucks, grab a 120gb ssd, and be happy. if the ssd i choose is intel 530, with 90 bucks i double up the capacity, and 2 additional years of warranty. at least if i am not happy with the performance, i am sure my dad will be more than happy biggrin.gif
*
Yeah, I was as told by another forumer TristanX that he said:
QUOTE
Don't need Kingston. Go for Intel 530 120GB. Jayacom selling it at RM250

RM250 is quite cheap too, somemore 5 year of warranty.

uh? oh. yeah 120gb ssd's should be around that price range smile.gif

of all the options, imo intel 530 is a good deal. for common usage it is sufficient.

edit: wo. i stumbled upon this, https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3273638 some one is kind enough to give it away for free.

Bro, got few more things I not quite understand. Certain SSD come with different thickness like 9.5mm or 7mm, so how do I know which fit my lappy or desktop? Desktop I know easy as there would be bracket for it. But laptop? hmmm hmm.gif

Edit: thread locked-down. looks suspicious. lol sweat.gif

the best way to find out is check the thickness of the current hdd in your laptop. in general, 7mm fits just fine if you have a 9.5mm hdd. i use 7mm ssd's for my laptops also, even if the stock drive is 9.5mm thick. however, if the stock drive is only 7mm thick, 9.5mm ssd will not fit. there is no need to use any bracket.

haha maybe the donation was over.

Thanks. I check it out later myself. smile.gif

Judging from the name LITE-ON 900S 256GB (M5PRO), it does looks like Plextor rebrand. But what about the LITE-ON 240GB?

Not sure about that but seem like liteon SSD is not a famous brand here, many recommend 900S because it is a rebrand model from the previous high end series ssd M5pro from plextor, plextor had just launched a new high end series few months ago known as M6Pro.
*
I don't mind buy the rebrand products as long it was as good as the original one. Problem is, not sure which to get, as I decided to swap my HDD inside Notebook with the SSD.

Based on spec 900S has better performance than Mu series, the price different also like about RM20, might as well just grab the 900S.
*
Yeah, just RM39 different. Anyway, do you know how long the warranty offer? 3Years?

I found Lelong got one Seller sell even cheaper on the 128GB variant, but the 256GB same price. Easier for me as he can just straight ship to me. laugh.gif
