Pardon my ignorance. What does W8SL means?

For the dell inspiron 14R, will the performance be further improve if i max out the ram? what is the max ram that i can put into that machine and what is the current price?

another thing, how much discount we can get normally?
*
Windows 8 Single Language icon_rolleyes.gif

Usually 4-8GB RAM will be good enough nod.gif
Upgrading the HDD to SSD will bring about more significant performance boost. But then SSDs are not cheap laugh.gif

For a budget of RM2.5k... you should be able to bargain up to RM100 if you're good

Looking for a gaming laptop with a good cooling system and can run those demanding games  (those with GTX780M maybe?)

1. Preferred Brand - Any with good repair/after-sales service. Moving to the UK this September. Just in the unfortunate case where something bad happens to the laptop.
2. Budget - <RM9K
3. Usage - Gaming, Multimedia
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14"-17"
*
Definitely an Illegear RS-15/17 here brows.gif
But wouldn't it be better to just buy over there since you will be staying there for some time? hmm.gif

Newer generation-ed notebooks come with much weaker processor at that price range unfortunately.. so there's not really a lot to choose from

The one I'm considering has these specs:
4th Gen Intel Core i7-4700MQ processor (2.4GHz Turbo Boost up to 3.4 GHz, 6MB cache)
Windows 8 Single Language
NVidia GeForce GTX780M 4GB GDDR5
17.3" Full HD Anti-Glare LED backlit (1920 x 1080)
16GB DDR3 16000MHz RAM
Super Raid 2 (128GB SSD*3 mSATA3)* + 750GB HDD (7200rpm)
Blu Ray Writer
SteelSeries Multi Colour Backlight Keyboard
Killer Double Shot Gaming Lan and Wi-Fi + BT4.0
Exclusive Cinema Pro Technology
x2 Theatre Class Speakers + 1 Subwoofer
2 Years Warranty with 1st Year International Warranty

Price: RM8999

What do you think ?
*
I still think the 1st one (in my previous post) is better, with plenty of budget left for you to really upgrade your SSD configurations
You are paying a lot of extras for the 2nd, especially the Bluray writer hmm.gif

Still, if you are not interested in upgrading yourself, then just go for the 2nd one since you have the budget and need it in a hurry

I'm sorry but may I know why need to upgrade RAM to 4 GB?
And the reason I dont want to continue using toshiba because my previous laptop always have the screen problem, the whole thing black out and in the end I need to change the screen. So, if for other brand will there be any problem similar to this?
*
All brands will have bad apples. And whether they have problems or not sometimes depends on user care as well nod.gif
Sometimes it just depends on luck, so its better to get good warranty support and duration instead to fix those problems when they arise nod.gif

4GB RAM is usually the "optimum" or minimum amount of RAM required for general multitasking. Your computing experience will be smoother, especially when you are doing several tasks at once time nod.gif

Hi all,

My current laptop is slowly dying, would like to look into getting a new one... Would appreciate some help !

1. Preferred Brand - Not Acer or Dell

2. Budget - 3k to 5k RM

3. Usage - Photoshop / image processing, watching hi-def movies, running numerically heavy simulations for work (eg in Excel, Mathematica, C++ etc... I've heard that GPU technology is quite good these days for this kind of purpose?), playing games

4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 17" screen, as light as possible given the requirement

Appreciate any recommendations on this one, thanks in advance !!  smile.gif

Unfortunately you will have to install the SSD yourself. Stock notebooks (apart from a few brands) don't come with SSD as standard.

Can consider this:
15.6"
Asus
S551LB-CJ077H, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M + (1366x767; touch)@RM2699, 4GB, 750GB, W8

Lenovo

Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3099[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs

*Some models are over your total budget, but worth considering since you can always put in the SSD anytime, as long as when budget permits

2. 3.6k max
3. AutoCAD AutoDesk Photoshop gaming
4. Prefer international warranty for a year cauz going to study at uk for a year.
Will be using for a long period so need quite decent cooling,
Besides that,
Did some research and found two models that caught my eye
1. Msi Ge60-20c i7
2. Asus N-Series N550JV-CN077H
Thank You
*
Definitely the MSI for performance, since its running on a real, quad-core i7 nod.gif
Comes with 2 years international warranty~

As for cooling, its hard to say. The MSI has a more powerful i7, but its at the same time thicker as well; whereas the Asus has a relatively "power-saving" i7, but its much slimmer.

My vote will go to MSI on this one icon_rolleyes.gif

hi guys. i need help on choosing between lenovo models:

G405s, A8-5550M + AMD HD8570M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB, W8
G400s, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT720M@RM1799, 4GB, 500GB, W8

Usage: for photo & video editing. simple autocad drawing and multitasking and light online gaming.

i went to lowyat plaza the salesman suggest me to get the A8-5550M bcoz it got 4 cores (good for multitasking i guess) compare to i5-3230 (which only has 2 cores) isnt true?

BTW about the gpu. i check on the internet, the AMD HD8570M gpu is a bad gpu compared to Nvidia GT720M. Plus, isnt true AMD processors easily get overheating problems?

any comments from sifus I would appreciate it very much  notworthy.gif

I am not really very knowledgeable regarding this, but here goes laugh.gif
The i5 is capable of churning out much more processing power as compared to the AMD APUs (stock). And although the AMD has 4 cores, it really depends on whether the program is optimized for them?

Those two GPUs are merely entry level ones, so can't really expect too much from them.
As for AMD overheating issues, that's a long long time ago haha...

Still, current AMD processors are not really competitive, unless if you have a very tight budget... otherwise you will be better off with Intel ones.

Oh ya, might wanna upgade the RAM to 8GB if you are into photo/video editing hmm.gif
