1. Any with good warranty and after sale service (I heard Asus have a very bad after sale service)
2. RM3.5k maximum
3. Must have a Full HD screen because I like to watch movies, gaming with medium settings - C.O.D: Black Ops 2, NFS Most Wanted 2012, light office.
4. Prefer 15", 13" and 14" is acceptable.

PS : Sorry if I'm asking too much.

As a college student, is it alright to splurge 3k-4k on a laptop , with the risk of theft and other mishap in mind.

Or should i just spend 2k on a dell laptop?
*
It might be better to just opt for a cheap Dell notebook with 3 years on-site warranty service, especially if you don't game nod.gif

Hi guys

Would like your personal opinion

Currently I'm in a dilemma in choosing which gaming laptop should I go for.

I'm stuck between asus g series j750x which has been recently announced not long ago with the 4th gen processor or purchasing illegear 15 inch laptop which was recommended by my friend which offers almost the same specification with the j750x

In your opinion which laptop is better?

Thanks guys
*
Illegear offers much better customization options, and not to mention, way better warranty support than Asus laugh.gif

Guys, is touch screen laptop really benefit you all? Thinking of getting Inspiron 14R, same spec except the touch screen. Price different is RM300 but seems like touch screen is interesting. But just afraid it will be more of a gimmick than features. And the screen should be more pricey aite?

Yeah, they are marketing gimmick haha, at least on notebooks that cannot be converted to tablet modes laugh.gif

QUOTE(kiasuXD @ Aug 4 2013, 10:37 PM)
I am looking for a laptop to replace my 5-year-old Acer laptop.

1. Preferred Brand: Asus / Lenovo / Samsung / Sony / Dell / HP / Acer
2. Budget: Max RM 2.5k
3. Usage: MS OFFICE, Photo Editing, Photoshop, Civilization V (low - medium settings), downloading & watching movies, iTunes
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: Maximum 14". I travel back and forth between East Coast & West Coast every month by bus, so I don't want something too heavy or too big.

I wish to have at least 2 3.0 USB ports, at least 4GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics card. Optical DVD drive not compulsory.

I am not sure to get Windows 7 or Windows 8. Most laptops come with Windows 8 now and some reviews say it's better than Windows 7, but since I haven't tried it for myself, I don't know (I'm using W7 now). Even if I do get Windows 8, I don't think I need a touch-screen. Is it going to hurt me in the future if I buy a non-touch screen? I wouldn't want to pay for a feature I won't use/appreciate.

Also, if you could recommend any reliable shops (or warn me about suspicious shops) in Digital Mall PJ, please tell me.

Thank you in advance!

* Prices are in RRP, negotiable
* some notebooks come with touchscreen. I don't really recommend getting one since its not really useful on a notebook- the cons outweight its pros
* The specs are mostly similar, so it all boils down to (i) which design u like more, (ii) which one offers better warranty [Dell offers the best; Asus offers the worst at the moment], (iii) which one offers longer standard warranty i.e. Toshiba@ 3 years
* use remaining budget to upgrade RAM to at least 4GB (if applicable), and extend warranty to 3 years

hi.. looking for a new laptop here..

1. no constraint on the brand,
2. Budget 2k-2.5k , max 3k
3. multitasking, but not into gaming
4. 13/14 inch size.

additional preference: light/portable, easy for maintenance

thanks sifu! smile.gif

Usually an i7-powered notebook will be useful for multitasking (though it depends on your "magnitude" of multitasking, I am assuming here that it is very intensive) and are not that light/portable
And most of them will come with a dGPU even if you don't need it haha

I meant any screen size >14" including 14". And another thing I want to add on is I will be using it for programming and some other big softwares cause I'm an Engineering student.

Plus, how is Lenovo? I see now many people are recommending Lenovo. Is it trustworthy? Does it gives alot of problem like Acer? And how effective is the after sales service? As good as Dell and ASUS?

Thanks in advance.

Whether a notebook lasts or not depends on a little bit of luck (its an electronic device anyway) and also how you take care of it.
Lenovo should be alright~
After sales service should be better than Asus, but not as good as Dell, unless if you opt for on-site warranty

QUOTE(Xincaberrie @ Aug 15 2013, 12:54 PM)
Hope you don't mind a newbie question, but can you explain the difference to me between msata, sata ll, and ssd in a notebook? Also, what is ubuntu? I'm guessing msata is when a notebook has a HDD (like 500gb or 1Tb),  and just a tiny bit of ssd (8gb, 24gb, or 32gb) to cache files for faster start up.  Is this also known as a hybrid drive, like in the new Sony Fit14? Does it make the performance of a notebook almost as fast as a full ssd one?

Okay, I'm trying this again since the only recommendation I got earlier was for heavy gaming laptops, and that's not what I'm really going for. I want a fast, sleek, not too heavy and bulky multimedia laptop, good performance but no need for overkill, as I'm not a heavy gamer.

1. Preferred brand : Apple, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba (can consider Acer and Asus too)
2. Budget: Range between RM2800 to RM3300, if necessary maximum budget RM3800.
3. Usage: office work, streaming movies on youtube, torrenting, playing HD videos and some games like simcity.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14 or 15 inch; good display that is not too reflective; reasonably good sound for playing music is appreciated. Last but not least, a good keyboard and trackpad. No overheating problems. Nice to have backlit keyboard but not a must.
*
In short
Ubuntu= Linux
Performance: SSD > mSATA SSD > HDD laugh.gif

Can consider these:
ThinkPad Edge E430, i7-3632QM + Nvidia GT635M + 16GB mSATA+750GB HDD@RM3399[2.2kg], W7P/W8, 4GB, anti-glare

ThinkPad T430U, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM3799, 4GB, W7P, 3 years on-site warranty

The 1st one is not as good as good as the ThinkPad in terms of reliability (but way better than normal notebooks), but it does come with a better CPU and GPU for more intensive work. The CPU is a overkilled for your work.

The 2nd one (please do check for the latest specs, there might be refreshed ones already) is a full-fletch business notebook (expect it to last up to 5 years or more) with extremely good warranty support. Only problem is its running on an integrated graphic card which is not exactly very powerful laugh.gif

Preferred Brand- Any brand except toshiba/acer/fujitsu (i5/i7 3th gen or 4th gen also can)
Budget-  Max 3k

Usage-
Uni purpose
-Future civil engineering student, not sure which engineering software i will be using yet.
-Multitasking( Net surfing, movie, music)
-Gaming(Dota 2,online FPS shooting game)
Preferred laptop/screen size- 13~15.6inch

Hope to get a decent laptop if can ''weight less than 3kg and battery life at least more than 4hours if possible. Dun too bulky ''

Btw will ultrabook get heated up easily?? Bcoz its too thin to me(ventilation might not be good)...scared that for long hour of usage will become vry hot.
Hope to get the advice from the sifus here  thumbup.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

its better to go for a performance notebook (rather than ultrabook) for your course; there is a high chance that you will need it:
14"

Yes, ultrabooks are thin and has much less space for proper heat dissipation..

2)Ram should be higher(6GB++)
3)Battery life have to about 5 hours..(Well,this is one of the problem,so far as I know, for most kind of laptop with fast processor, its battery will not last long, around 2to 3 hour at most right?..haiz cry.gif )
So,currently, any suggestion laptop for me?hopefully not so expensive... smile.gif
And sometimes I play game too tongue.gif (but this one is optional  biggrin.gif ) hehe..

How much is your budget bro? laugh.gif

Yes, (1) and (2) will be needed, and if you are doing 3D stuffs, then a good GPU will be good as well...
Battery life, on the other hand, has nothing to do with the course LOL... you will probably be plugged in when you render your stuffs anyway laugh.gif
Most notebooks can last around 3 hours or more now, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem icon_rolleyes.gif
