Guys' I've been offered to work with kencana marine as fresh grad in lumut..what do you think of this career path. I heard the job is for project management for epcc of wheatstone project modules (70% site and 30% desk) and have to wear coveralls and stay in the yard. (I've always wanted to go offshore) My background is construction and what are my chances of going offshore? the HR from SK said there will be chance to go offshore, subject to operation requirement of SK ( I don't know what probability).

I'm currently working in a multidisciplinary consulting firm(mainly construction) and the pay is freaking good, permanent,good benefits, very nice working environment, good training and colleagues.

I'm having a hard time to decide now, since for now, SK is the only Oil and Gas company that called me. I have applied about 7 oil and gas companies.

My job now requires a lot of thinking and design structures, which is real engineering. My current boss is also an ir.

what is the income of an ir compared to a project manager in downstream oil and gas?

Anything is possible in O&G, you just need to work hard and smart, and build a network of connections. And play golf! 

I have applied before with TH Heavy. Didn't even called me for intw..maybe cos of my salary already high. Its a shipyard...what do you expect. Dusty...hot...noisy..i am at MMHE now. Same condition.

meh... only 4k ah? contractors make a lot more than them la itu macam. lol.
most of those fresh engineers I've met knows nothing la.
They can,t even interpret the isometric drawings properly. and yet, they wanna lanci to the contractors. lol

Ah I totally forgot about the alternate route of grad school. The earliest I could finish at UTP (they don't seem to specify a minimum CGPA requirement) would be 1.5 years, but who knows how industry employment will be like then? People keep talking about an economy bubble burst. Our national oil reserves are falling faster than it's being replenished. Other MNCs may follow Newfield in exiting Malaysia to concentrate on their shale assets elsewhere. All this combined with the generally agreed on fact that Masters' holders have less job opportunities than degree holders  (the "overqualified applicant" argument), I think I'll take my chances gaining valuable O&G experience during the 1.5 years, even if it's non-engineering related.

Indeed...from what i understand, the market will see some softening which happens globally. Reading news about companies profit going down in Q1, companies restructure, jobs cut, laying off and from your case, now i know this also happened in Malaysia. Here, NOC now having a huge debt, start focusing on production, slowing down the exploration, and the contracts are now NOT renewed which really hit some of the drilling contractors and services companies. That translated to downsizing the company, moving expats to other regions and laying off the locals.

But I do believe some companies still actively hiring people and if someone has the right skills set, he/she will win.
