yeah there alumni which can contact with seniors for jobs opening. but im trying to apply based on my effort first  smile.gif

MMC and Principia (www.principia.fr) are looking for fresh naval architects. You should know how to apply if interested.

You dont want to ask your seniors about the job opening but you posting here in this forum asking about the same thing. Dont you think your seniors are more better to be asked as they might be already in the same industry (marine or naval architecture)??

Hey guys if I study petroleum engineering at utm will I have greater chances to go into ong field?

Which position in oil rig is the best? In terms of salary vs work load
*
As pioneer in petroleum engineering, i guess you will have a better chances but depend on your grades, attitude etc. There will be a lot career fairs in utm every year, some companies do it exclusively for petroleum eng students either for the fresh grads position or for the scholarship program. UTM students also actively involve in the SPE programs.

From my observation;
Companyman- drilling supervisor ( the more experiences you have, higher dayrate.)
Wireline eng ( good job completion bonus)
Fishing supervisor ( usd600 per day once break up, that is what my friends get now)
Subsea engineer - taking care of subsea BOP ( high demand, good pay and subsea premium rentention bonus)

QUOTE(ohsome @ Mar 22 2014, 12:07 AM)
Hey guys! I'm in a huge dilemma..hope to get some feedback and advices on this matter.

I'm currently a trainee mud engineer. A freshie previously. Well I thought that everything would be going smooth in my career initially..but things have been really unfortunate for me. Operation from the client side has been going really slow and things don't look good at all. There is hardly any rig that allow trainees to get on board for exposure at the moment. Forecast says that new rigs are coming in gradually but very very slowly..so it's gonna take awhile before I can ditch my status as a trainee. And it's definitely gonna take even longer for me to get onto the rig as a proper backup engineer on a fixed schedule. Optimistically it could be early next year. It could be worse...in the mean time all I can do is stomach the low basic pay and sits in the office doing exactly nothing. Probably I'll have to waste for like more than 1 year before I can really start my career as an actual mud engineer. I'm so sick of waiting...and I feel that I have wasted a lot of time here and gonna waste even much more if I decided to stick to this job.

On the other hand recently I have been offered an opportunity to join a newly started-up company as a business analyst. This company is in a new line of business, something called duty-holder where it sits in between the operator and service provider. It provides comprehensive data and operates oil field for operators..which according to the recruiter it is something very new even in UK and now they are aiming to become the first and the best in Asia in this line of business. It's a huge project with seemingly very good prospect and exposure at the same time very rewarding. It's totally different from what I wanted in O&G field initially..but the idea that you get to join a team doing such an interesting project as a pioneer and the opportunity for you to build a legacy tempted me a lot. But of course only if everything goes like how their vision is...if it turns out to be a flop probably I'll just end up being a very common passer-by who's stuck in the rat race forever. There's no U-turn.

So now I have to decide. Should I stomach it and keep waiting for my chances as a trainee mud engineer even though I might have to sacrifice probably 1 year from now doing nothing? Or should I take up the business analyst position which is full of uncertainties? Pay-wise, for basic both are more or less the same just that the offshore allowance for mud engineer position is not bad, with guaranteed good money after a few good years of experience while for the business analyst nothing is guaranteed. If it goes good then it should be extremely rewarding..or I might end up becoming a lowly-paid cow-worker.

Thank you so much for reading my long post as I'm trying to explain my situation as detailed as possible. Would really love to hear what's on your mind for my case...

Slowly but surely.

Request for courses to add knowledge and kill time.....

Thanks for your advice..but due to budget and financial constraints we may only go for very limited amount of internal trainings. I went a few to kill time..but the thought of having to do this for more than 1 year from now is really depressing. I'm 24 already and of course if possible I won't want to waste any time at all..
*
You still young bro....dont worry too much..I have a friend that joined service company as FE/FS in Sand Control division..But due to not getting the contract he didnt do any job related to his position. Few times went offshore to join the casing crew and after that he was asked to learn about liner hanger which also not in his job description. I think after a year plus or two, he is now transferred to other division (MWD) and start back again from zero, attending courses etc. and now happily with his new position. If i'm not misktaken, he joined that service company when he is 27 or 28 years old....

How is the market in Malaysia right now? I do not hear any layoff happened in Malaysia yet, must be still good. Yeah, thats good. Heard some of the operating companies, BG, Petrobras etc., Service company such as Weatherford and some other drilling contractors start to cut people because of the downturn.

kawan kawan....where is to helibase in Kota Kinabalu if you need to go to Tungsten explorer rig? how do i know the checkin time? thank u....any recommeneded hotel with fast internet in KK?
*
I guess you are not the crew of that rig. If you are, the travel should already been arranged from your home to the rig. The agent will pick you up at the airport, send you to the hotel and next morning send you to the helibase.

If you are the rig third party personnel, your coordinator should know and brief you about the travel to the rig. Normally (my company) will provide that kind of information to the third party compang (their coordinator).

I believe same case for the operating company third party/service personnel (slb, halli,bh etc)

Guys, is it possible to gain experience as field engineer and then move to drilling engineer in the future? Experience is counted right? icon_question.gif
*
Yes, it is possible. I know DE that previously was a Mud Engineer and another one was a MWD. My opinion, yes you will have to learn more broad aspects i.e mud, casing, mwd,dd, rig equipments specs but you already so called expert in your previous field (if it is related to drilling such as mud engineer, mwd,dd etc)..And again it will depend on your 'rezeki' /luck and performance and your NETWORK.....

Dafaq? Hey friend you know how big are those tankers. Also someone of them have navy to escort them from terrorist, none the less people taking bites from it.

If you are talking about rig, that pressure is even more crazy.

Also, in OnG they are very strict about doing things that undercut their business. I know ExxonMobil will not tolerate such things, in the past there was a procurement guy that wanted to earn a couple of bucks by making a cut at the vendor side. That guy was never seen in the OnG sector and his career ruined.

I think you are talking about downstream probably on the logistics site.
*
If he is talking about selling diesel illegally, yes it happened. My friend working with one of the local offshore supply/support vessel company have this issue but i dont know how frequent they did it. Logically, it is not one man job. One AB can bring back around 10k-20k when they signed off the vessel.

Kekekeke.....it is not a 1 man job!

I think you should. Good platform to start your career in drilling. Just bear in mind that they have bond agreement that you need to serve. And do not think being a drilling engineer like one in petronas, exxon, shell etc. You are a drilling crew, rig will be your second home, hands on (roustabout, roughneck and progress up the ladder) and attending a lot of training.

Just to give some motivation, five figures salary once you AD with 4 weeks offshore and 4 weeks off (paid)
