Iago Aspas: Rather optimistic about him considering there are rumours linking him with top teams in La Liga, not too bad for a player playing for a relegation battling team. Statistics wise apparently he creates more chances than Messi and Ronaldo. It would be fair to think of him as La Liga's Benteke in which he single handedly saved a club from relegation (of course not comparing their playing style).

Luis Alberto: Sevilla might be asking a bit too much for my liking. His goal/assist statistics doesn't mean much considering it is only the second division where teams have awful defence. Does anyone wonder why Barca did not pick up their first option on him? Wonder why he wasn't selected for the u-21 squad? 6-8m seems a risky gamble to me.

Simon Mignolet: Am I the only one who doesn't want Pepe to leave? He has been nothing but a loyal servant to the club through and through. He did not once say that he wants to leave and neither did Barca say that they are interested in him, in fact Barca are linked with a host of other GKs. Spending close to 10m on a backup keeper when we have greater needs elsewhere is just stupid.

Luis Suarez: Don't want him to leave because we will need him to push back into top 4 even though I'm beginning to really dislike him. Don't think he will leave either since Real Madrid seem more interested in Cavani and Bale. If we do sell him though 40m plus Alvaro Morata or Jese Rodriguez would suffice.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Not really a playmaker type player as many would suggest. Doesn't have a good assist rate, only scored 1 goal against some weak CL side, passing rate dropped considerably when playing against stronger CL side (BVB, Juventus). But he reminds me a lot of Lampard in which he displays good positional awareness to get into open spaces behind defenders, very pacey and good finishing. At least he is gonna give us some scoring from midfield which we haven't had since Stevie's goals dried up. I personally prefer Christian Eriksen though, younger and cheaper since he is entering the final year of his contract but it seems BVB are more likely to land him.

Why haven't we targeted any left backs yet? Don't we only have Enrique for that position? Judging from last season, Jack Robinson is not ready for 1st team football yet and I would prefer to see Glen Johnson playing on the right.

What happened to the other centre backs we were linked with? Surely Kolo Toure isn't signed to play 1st team and Ilori is just a prospect. Papadoupoulos is in a similar mould to Skrtel (hard tackling no nonsense type), Alderweireld would be a great fit in our system since he can pass the ball really well.

We got Toure, Skrtel, Agger, Kelly, Coates, Wisdom tongue.gif

If reports are true, Skrtel and Coates are on their way out. Ilori to replace Coates and one more to replace Skrtel. We still need to strengthen left back position.

We got Enrique, Downing, Robinson and even Agger can cover that area tongue.gif

Johnson as well.

Robinson and Downing were terrible when played there last season. It is not Johnson's natural position after all. Moving Agger over there seem like an even worse decision considering he was our only decent centre back last season discounting Carra since he already retired.

What do you guys think of Christian Atsu? Looks like a (6m?) Sterling at best to me, very raw and not ready for first team action. Don't see why we should sign him when we have Sterling and Ibe coming up who doesn't look inferior to Atsu.

Alberto:
- Barca's refusal to pickup option on him implies that he is no better than their current crop.
- If you were to look at Spain's national squad, almost all of the bigger names have gotten numerous caps in u-21.
- Alberto has only made 1 u-21 appearance so it basically means he is not as good as many other youngsters in the country and is likely to not be an important player for the national team in the future.
- Not saying he is bad or he will not turn out good, just saying the asking price is a tad too much for an unproven kid who's only real experience is Segunda Division.
- Let's not compare him with Coutinho, Coutinho has played quite a number of first team football in Brazil, Italy and Spain. He is also very highly rated amongst Brazilian youngsters racking up numerous caps and winning an u-17 competition for Brazil in the process.
- Alberto much more unproven than Coutinho.

Mkhitaryan:
- Hope we can conclude the deal soon, this guy looks the real deal.
- I still prefer Christian Eriksen though, what do you guys think about him?

Downing:
- Was decent for the 2nd half of the season but if he is earning wages as reported in the media we should sell him to shed some wage bill.
- Don't see much playing opportunity for him next season.

Ince:
- Typical overrated/overpriced youngster.

Robinson:
- Glad to have him too but he is just not ready for first team action.
- Would love to see him loaned out to another side in the top flight.
- Let's not forget how defensive mistakes have cost us games last season. It's been 4 seasons since CL football, if we don't get back in soon the financial gap will widen further and further.

This is apparently THE summer in which Arsene will finally splash the cash. Higuain hmm?

Man City signing Fernandinho, linked with the likes of Isco, Cavani.

Chelsea with The Happy One back.

Top four, I don't feel optimistic with our chances. Top 5 is good enough for me but that will likely be the last straw for Suarez. Fingers Crossed.

If Suarez were to leave, who are we gonna replace him with? Benteke is one who would fit the bill for me. Can't really think of anyone else at the moment.

Why we didnt join in the race to sign Higuan? I like him...Would be a good replacement for Suarez if the latter leaves
*
Because he would cost in excess of 130k in wages a week if reports are true. Don't think our current wage structure allows for this kind of money.

The 30-year-old has left the door open to an Anfield exit but said he intends to stay.

"My situation is clear. I have a three-year contract with Liverpool, although in football you can never tell," he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

"I'm very happy and satisfied at Liverpool, I feel valued and respected.

"Logically, if there was a chance to improve and go to a bigger club it would be a good opportunity, although there are few clubs bigger than Liverpool."

In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Confidencial Reina added: "In principle my plan is to continue with Liverpool.

"I have three years left on my contract and I want to fulfil that and even go further."

Asked whether he thought his time in the Premier League had come to an end Reina, currently on international duty at the Confederations Cup in Brazil, replied: "I don't think so. Nor do I think that is a possibility.

"The best option for my family is for me to stick with Liverpool."

"Martin to move away from Liverpool? I specifically say that Skrtel has never said he wants to go away, then it depends on the Liverpool market because everything could change," he told Tuttomercatoweb.

"It's true that the last two seasons were difficult but in football it can happen.

"Napoli? I think they haven't the financial possibilities to take him. Liverpool has not decided a price because they don't intend to sell the player. Anyway, I don't think that Napoli can afford his wage."

Looks like Skrtel is staying put.

'Pepe is a fantastic goalkeeper but Simon Mignolet is a player that has done really well. He’s also part of an emerging Belgium squad that has come into a golden era. He’s very much a part of that.

It will be a straight fight between Mignolet and Courtois for the place between the sticks for a foreseeable future. Belgium's golden generation looks REALLY impressive on paper, I'm hoping they are not like England's so called all talk no show "Golden Generation".

Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin confirmed the Bundesliga side's offer for the 24-year-old midfielder, but insists it falls way short of the club's own valuation.

Instead, the Ukrainian outfit want one instalment of €30m (£25m) for the player, who has gone AWOL after not showing up with the rest of the Shakhtar squad for pre-season training.

His impending departure could have been helped by Shakhtar's acquisition of Brazilian Fred from SC International for €15m (£12.5m), announced by the club on Wednesday.

Palkin told Futbol: "I don't know where Mkhitaryan is now, solely his agent knows this.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have joined the chase for Spanish sensation Gerard Deulofeu.

The talented wideman, 19, is among Barcelona's most promising prospects, even by recent standards.

The arrival of Brazil forward Neymar, however, has pushed him further down the Spanish champions' pecking order, and he could therefore benefit from a loan move.

Liverpool will be on alert after it was reported in L'Equipe that PSG winger Jeremy Menez is unsure whether he will extend his contract beyond 2014.

Reports four months ago in the British press claimed Brendan Rodgers was lining up a move for the French international and now he is likely to be watching with interest since the arrival of the Ligue 1 champion’s new coach Laurent Blanc.

Menez's relations with the former France international boss were strained during Euro 2012 when the player was sent off in their 2-0 defeat to Spain for bad language towards the referee. Discipline was poor throughout the competition in the French camp and Menez was one of those players who was given a ban by the French football federation. Now Blanc has replaced the departed Carlo Ancelotti, it has been speculated that the former Roma player may have to move on and therefore won’t extend his contract with the French club.

Deulofeu played alongside Alberto last season, will Brendan look to bring him in too? Menez is definitely an upgrade over Downing, and with PSG possibly looking to raise funds for Rooney, anything is possible.

Isn't it all just speculation regarding our interest in Mkhitaryan? Shaktar confirmed that Dortmund made a bid for him while there has been no contact whatsoever from Liverpool despite all the rumours. I have doubts whether our interest in him is true.

Anfield side clinch move to sign Armenian international.

Liverpool have reportedly won the race to sign highly rated Armenian international Henikh Mhhitaryan according to Russian source Sport-Express.

The Shakhtar Donestk midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield and a €30m (£25.6m) bid from the Merseyside club has been accepted by the Ukrainian champions and the 24 year old is set to be unveiled as Liverpool’s latest summer signing in a matter of days.

Mamadou Sakho has revealed he has received an offer to leave PSG in the summer, confirming Liverpool and AC Milan's interest in him. Sakho, 23, made 24 Ligue 1 appearances in PSG's title-winning campaign but predominantly played second fiddle to the experienced centre-back pairing of Thiago Silva and Alex at the Parc des Princes.

The defender has been offered a new contract by les Parisiens, but has not yet agreed to the deal as speculation over his future grows.

Incumbent PSG coach Laurent Blanc could hold the key to Sakho's future, although the Frenchman revealed he has been approached by a number of clubs.

"I'll be able to talk with the new coach and see what he thinks," Sakho said. "I am flattered by the interest of historic clubs like Liverpool and AC Milan. We will see what happens in the near future.

"I have to make a decision. PSG is my club, I was born here and I learned my football here... I want to play for this club all my life, but it is clear that I do not want to sit on the bench.

"I have not played as much as I would have liked last sesaon because of the choices of the coach. Every player wants to play every week, too. There is an offer on the table."

Granada left-back Guilherme Siqueira - a reported target for Everton and Liverpool - says he will only leave the Primera Division club should an offer which is too good to turn down arrive. Siqueira, 27, has been suggested as Roberto Martinez’s preferred option should current Toffees left-back Leighton Baines follow his former boss David Moyes to Manchester United, while their Merseyside rivals and Turkish champions Galatasaray have also been mentioned in persistent speculation in Spain.

The Brazilian defender, who joined Inter Milan’s youth system as a teenager, and joined Granada via the club’s close links to Udinese, told Marca that he would be open to an offer which met both his sporting and financial hopes, however remaining at Granada was a good option too.

"To leave it would have to be an offer impossible to turn down from both sporting and financial points of view," Siqueira said. "The operation would also have to be good for the club, and the new team would have to be on the Champions League level. If this does not happen, I would not be worried at all about staying at Granada, where I am very happy."

http://espnfc.com/news/story?id=1487364&cc=3436

Left back Siqueira and center back Sakho, any thoughts? And there are reports of interest in Mkhitaryan from Anzhi, sigh....

I also think that Dannyboy Sturridge have big potential not just for Liverpool but for England as well and can combine well with Rooney and Welbeck for England but as with any England players, he is injury prone.

Suarez on the other hand is like a bull. He dont get injured so easily.

Unless we have a good replacement for this bull, chances are decreasing.

Ben is good at the moment but I am afraid he is just another Papiss Cisse in the making. Plus Suarez's nutmeg is comparable to Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar. Hard to find someone so entertaining.
*
Especially considering Aston Villa are asking for something in the region of 25-30mil pounds, Benteke could well be another big money flop which we can't afford anymore.

QUOTE(Duke Red @ Jul 10 2013, 04:27 PM)
That is a healthy sum to pay for a 22 year old but he would be less of a risk than Andy Carroll. Benteke has been scoring goals his whole life, at club and international level, where he is a starter with a team that's leading their WC qualifying group. Not saying he's the finished article but he does have a proven track record, unlike say Darren Bent who had one standout season. It's scary to think he can get better.
*
His past records at other leagues are not indicative of anything, remember Mateja Kezman? At the international level, their group consist of the likes of Wales and Macedonia, the only noteworthy opponent out of that group is Croatia.

No doubt he is a much better prospect than Carroll but 25-30m is still a hugely inflated price to pay. Even if we can afford to pay that sum, I don't think we can compete against the likes of Spurs or Chelsea for his signature. If we are lucky enough to get him though I hope he does not come in as a replacement for Suarez. A front line of Suarez, Sturridge and Benteke is pretty formidable on paper.

looks like we are only signing players worth 10m or less, because according to some of you we should not dream big and we should not spend big

this is the kind of mentality that gets david villa away

when you have no ambition... then there you are

sorry if am too harsh, just stating my opinion
*
It's not about spending big, it's about spending them on the right players. What did Carroll and Downing do for us? That's 55m right there, did we not spend big?

I believe Benteke belongs in the high risk high reward category, not sure if we can afford that risk or will BR take that risk?

its easy to associate high price = high risk

aspas is high risk.
*
Nope, if you were to pay 100m for a Ronaldo or Messi would you consider that high risk? I wouldn't. Some players have proven enough that they can compete at top tiered leagues and therefore present less risk. Benteke has only had one season in a top tiered league. If he lives up to his expectation then it is money well spent, if not we will be looking to sell him off at a huge cut price deal just like we did in Carroll.

Aspas was signed at a reported value of 8m I believe? If he fails to make it in England we should have no problem selling him back to Spain where he has no shortage of suitors for a fee in excess of 5m.
