I just bought a male shihtzu last nite ...
Wanna ask
1. IF i need to FIX the feeding time or can i feed him at random time?? I feed him two meals a day - breaky and dinner. For dinner, can i sometimes feed him at 7 pm while at times feed him at 530 pm ?? Can I just wake him up from his sleep during his meal time ??

2. And when i put him in the playpen, he noes whr to go when he wanna pee poo (newspaper). THen when I open one playpen for him to come out, he doesn't noe how to go back to the playpen and pee on the newspaper. Instead, he peed at the doorstep sweat.gif. What can i do on this ?

3. Another problem is after he pee, he tends to step on his own urine. How to solve this too ?

4. When I scold him, he barks back at me rclxub.gif. Wud can i do so that he noes when i say "no", i mean "NO"!!

Hmmm... Check your dog's ears. Find the source of the stink. Sometimes, it could come from ear mites, which cause your dog to produce more ear wax than usual.  blink.gif

syrian, foul smell usually come from ears like aragorn said.
either that or your pup has been eating/smelling his poop. did you kiss him? biggrin.gif

btw, if your pup not fully vaccinated i wouldnt send to groomers coz you never know if other dogs carrying any disease, sekali he get parvo/distemper bye bye loe.

Last nite my friend came. She owns a maltese and she taught me how to clean da ears. His left ear is very vry clean whereas his right ear is a bit dirty. My friend cleaned it for me with a cotton bud. Now i noe how to clean liao. And nope, i neva kiss him - very gelik coz his nose is WET. Already cleaned da ears but still got a bit of smell.

I sent him to groomer on the day I bought him coz he got "kau sat" and i didn't noe about it. My first time getting a dog. Da groomer cleaned him up for me and asked me to get a tick collar and she said I'll need to bring my shih tzu for a second visit one week later to be bathed with some gentle flea/ticks liquid for one last time to make sure that the eggs die too.

To me, it really depends on the particular dog, some of my maltese will feel very geli if they touch slightly on pee but some juz step all over! So i've decided to use the pads as it can absorbs effectively. You can also refer to others' suggestions which i feel they are very good too!

Treats for my dogs will be their own dog food, special treats juz once in a while.
Is it all around the face or is it due to tear stain? These are what you can do:

1) Use a drinking bottle instead of bowl to contain water.

2) Clean up the ears EVERYDAY.

3) Wash the dirty area everyday & make sure you dry it up, not dry enought will cause more stains.

4) Apply cornstarch on the stain area.

5) Provide filtered water & food without colorings!
May i know what are the brands? Please list all here if possible, i'm intersted in quite many range of products, i do own many dogs.
How old is Casper currently? And what brand of milk you are feeding? If Casper's teeth already grown out, you should start letting him to chew on kibbles instead, to encourage healthy building of teeth.

Yah he does sleep, but i'm sure your dog is very alert. If your dog never sleep, then he cant tahan la.  sweat.gif

Yea, I've read up on some previous post. I'm goin to Ikano over the weekends to get a tray and get some floormats too. Will train him to pee poo on floormat .. hehe. I'm using drinking water bottle and I jz cleaned up his ears this evening. I bathed him and blow him dry. Amazingly he didn't bark at all thumbup.gif. He sat quietly on the chair when i bathed him and snugged his head on my laps when i blow dry him .. hehe .. But hor, the smell still didn't go away wor. Could it possibly be the typical "doggy" smell?? Can remove that smell ma ??

QUOTE(aragorn2976 @ Jan 30 2007, 05:43 PM)
How old is your pup? According to the vet, best to bathe your dog once a week.  hmm.gif

If your dog tends to have that "doggy" smell, you can wipe your dog down with warm water and salt.

My chemistry teacher said that if you put soda bicarbonate on your dog, the "doggy" smell would go away.  laugh.gif  laugh.gif I never tried it but we just wipe down our dog once she gets itchy and a bit "smelly". smile.gif

He's 3 months old. Wipe him with warm water and salt using a piece of cloth ?? Can wipe its face too ?? Da lukewarm water with salt really works or not ?? tongue.gif Between, do you guys wipe the private parts after it pee and poo ??

Hi there!!

First of all, congrats on teaching your pup to sit/stay.  rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif

Like kids, dogs can be taught obedience the first day you get your dog.  biggrin.gif

Anyway, guess you have to check your dog's teeth if the smell is coming from the saliva.  laugh.gif

Oh yes, do clean the teeth from time to time too because even though we give dry food, you can imagine some particles of food can get stuck in between the teeth. Brush with dog toothpaste or even children's toothpaste is ok.  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

My Lucky only got 4 teeth at da moment laugh.gif. Others are either growing or not grown yet. But then hor, when he breathes thru to my face, I can't smell anything ler. Datz y I'm confused where does the smell come from?? rclxub.gif. But I am very very sure it comes from da face doh.gif.

By the way, is there any breeder I can contact to place my shih tzu there just for about 3 to 4 days during CNY??? I can pay a small fee lar if there's such a service. I noe pets safari got offer such service but very expensive rclxub.gif - kenot afford it. Or is there anyone out there willing to offer me the help?? I wanna scan thru first la if that person's trustable. And don't worry, if u put Lucky in playpen, he noes whr to pee poo. He's only confused when u let him roam freely. Now i'm headache with where to temporarily place him when I go back to Kuching for CNY. Just for once nia .. Hope u guys can direct me to the appropriate person. notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

A lot of ppl selling MS, price at around RM750 min without cert (i think). Forgotten liao. Some ppl sell at a price lower than that but make sure u check carefully lor coz it might not be a pure breed.

Erm... for a start, you may need to teach your dog that newspaper is a NO, NO. You can roll up the newspaper and smack on the floor next to him when he's tearing it into pieces.  brows.gif

Anyway what kind of breed is your dog ? Is it the large breed ? Floor mats are not suitable for large breed dogs (Well, I doubt you will keep large breed dogs at home also right ?) because they have the ability to lift the mat up easily. Smaller breed need a bit of effort to do that but you need to train your dog not to play with that - it's a mat, not a magic carpet though.  laugh.gif

Alternatively, you can spread the mat over the floor in the toilet without newspaper beneath (once your pup had stained the mat with it's scent). To wash, just lift the mat, dumb the poo (if he poo-ed on top of it) and rinse the floor beneath the mat (and the mat itself). No newspaper hassle ! smile.gif

I'm wondering if I can build something like a walkway that leads up to the toilet bowl and place the mat over the hole in the toilet bowl...  brows.gif
*
He's a shih tzu. But how do i train him NOT to play with floor mats?? I rolled up some newspapers already and tied with rubber bans. I put aside. Thot when i saw him playing with newspapers, I'll slap it hard on the floor or slap his leg with newspaper. It's convenient for me to train him to go to toilet to do his bizniz coz i'm sharing the bathroom with someone else at home. Overall, he is a very cute and nice dog. He doens't really bark and he sits still for me to finish bathing and blowing dry him. His only problem is playing with his so-called "toilet" rclxub.gif. I wanna vomit blood liao. shakehead.gif

Have you taught your pup to learn the term "NO" ? Applying "NO" during the restriction process proves to be useful. As a clear reminder, a scare or two using loud sound (like smack the floor using newspaper) would be much like enforcing it.

Note : Be sure that when you say "NO", say it in a strict voice and look at the dog in the eye while upholding a stern look. Remember not to smile even if the dog looks back at you with it's puppy's eyes and beg for sympathy.  smile.gif
*
I did. My shih tzu now knows what is "NO", "SIT", "STAY", and "GOOD BOY". I'm now teaching him to "COME", "GO", and "UP" (stand). I dun wanna confuse him btwn stand and stay..hehe. When I say NO, he will stop and look at me. When i scold him loud, I looked directly into his eyes and i can see that he's sked and he tries looking somehwere else instead of looking into my eyes.

BUT the problem is he bites and play with the floor mat and newsapper when NO ONE IS AT HOME ar ... So, i can neva catch him in the action .. how to solve this ? shakehead.gif

He is overall a very good and cute doggie. When I bath him, he jz sits quietly on the chair and let me bath him as well as blow dry him. His only problem is with biting the newspaper and floor mat. I got put some toys in this playpen for him to wud play de rclxub.gif.

A puppy would always want to get into some trouble wan.... but you see, he will learn as he gets older. What toys do you give him to play? If he likes to play with floor mat, which I am guessing is cloth, why not you give him his very own cloth toy. My dog since she was a puppy would chew clothes and towels.... then I fed up, bought her an IKEA soft toy that has no plastic bits. Wah, from that day onwards she has not taken the clothes... but sometimes she chew towels to get attention.

Associate the floor mat with "NO" and some newspaper scaring.... hit the floor really loud. You see, you take the newspaper to smack the legs, the dog would think you are playing with him since when dogs play, they sign each other by patting their paws onto the floor or other dogs... well, this is what I see with my dogs lah. I use newspaper to beat on the floor or on my leg really loudly and scold the dog, later ignore the fella as a punishment... well, it works for me.

Also, make it known that playing with his toys means there will be a reward. When he plays with his toys, make happy tones to your dog, say "GOOD BOY" and give a treat. So in his puppymind, if he plays with his toys he will get something good.
*
Yea .. I bought him a ball, greenies (medium size), nylon bone (medium size), and edible white colour bone (small size) as well as a soft toy. He got play with them -mostly with his ball, which I paly with him as well and on his own; and he loves to bite the greenies and soft toy.

Today I just bought another type of floor mat from Giant, which is thicker and heavier. DA previous type which i bought from Tesco is very light and thin only. Heavier one - maybe he'll not be able to lift them up:P. And now I use one corner of the playpen to add weight to one corner of the floor mat - dunno how to say also .. hehe.

He's not really fully paper trained yet. He noes how to go to the tray to pee poo when he's in his playpen. But when i let him roam in my room, he doesn't seem to know where to go when he wanna pee poo. Usually, I just opened up two pieces of playpen and let him roam out himself. Then he jz simply pee or poo in my room. Sometimes he knows how to get back to the tray to pee poo but sometimes he doesn't know rclxub.gif. Why is this happening??

And then he always go lay inside the tray to play his stuffs. Should I discourage him to play in the tray and let him know that is strictly a place for pee poo?? Or it's alright for him to lay inside the tray ?

Hmmm... I didn't follow up on your previous postings... how old is your pup?

Toilet training takes time. For me the best toilet for dogs is grass hahah... can't go wrong with grass. My dog, I got her as a 5 month old puppy and it was a bit of trouble toilet training. I did newspaper training but it did not work well with her so I made her do it on grass and now she knows grass is toilet for her.

Generally puppies got slightly weak bladders... they got trouble controlling it so that is why simply pee and poo. Do not worry... for now he is still learning where is his toilet. For me, I like to place it at an area he can see and has easy access to.

Do not feed your dog too much Greenies... later got stomach or intestine complications.

Also, if you cannot find ways for your pup to leave the mat alone, do get a doggy repellant spray... works very well. I even use it on gerbils and hamsters if they chew on their cages. It is herbal but taste bitter to dogs and cats.

You want him to associate the tray as a toilet but if he plays in the tray, it would confuse him and make toilet training longer. The tray, always leave a piece of newspaper that has some dried pee. Your dog needs to have the pee smell at its toilet area so it would know it is the toilet area. Just a bit would do. If he plays or places his toys inside the tray, do not scold him for he would think if he goes into the tray he would get a dislike from you and be scared of the tray. Just take him away from his tray. Soon he would learn. Training a puppy takes time. Now the pup is without a doggy mom so he cannot understand things by himself. He got no role model.... a human owner can teach a dog but is very slow since we do not know how to talk dog and dogs do not know how to talk human, so now you have to show your pup in tone of voice and body language.
*
He just turned 3 months old yesterday. I'm living in condo - so, kenot grass train him tongue.gif. Must use paper train lor sweat.gif. I put the tray at one corner of his playpen and he noes the whereabout. At times when i put him out, he rushed back to the tray to pee poo. But at times, he jz cincai pee poo nia. Two days ago, i saw him running back to the tray at fast speed and he pooped there. So, I gave him some treat and praised him. Then i used toilet paper to pick up the poo and flush in the toilet. Jz few seconds only de. When i got back to my room, I stepped into his urine at the doorstep there, jz right next to his tray (about few inches away). Why is he like that?? He noes whr to poop and yet he cincai pee. It's just about 2 steps away from his tray where he peed.

And then hor, why is it that all ur doggies poo at certain time whereas my shih tzu does not do that? He doesn't poo right after meals. Sometimes, he poos 1 hour after meal; sometimes 2 or 3 hours; sometimes even up to 4-6 hours. Why he got no timing one when he poo ??

Wanna ask one more question. Can use Pantene for my doggie ar ??? Or must use doggie shampoo ?? Coz I think i saw one person posted before saying that he/she used pantene for his/her dog.
