BH, looking at the TDF with interest, exciting prospect with different winners from the flat sprint, uphill sprint finish, summit Finnish that will throw out many sets of winners. Not neglecting the GC guys..but it has puzzle me for quite a bit now, cyclist like Nibali is not in the fray this time, but I should think that he is a better GC guy than JF. And given that the TDF is the most prestigious of all the Grand tour and Nibali was at his devastating best in the Giro. Can't he prepare for the TDf too and give his rival Alberto, Froomey or Rodrigues some Italian "chops"?
Like in Boxing, we have the WBC,WBA,WBF and whatnot, it seems that there is an unwritten rule that the unification bout whose chances are far too remote than your hypothetically possible world record attempt of 500 bouts with your Hitomi signatured Tenga at one go!
i don't watch the flat stage wins... those is the usual very predictable ones (cav vs sagan) if the stage is purely flat or have a long stretch of flats before the finish line..
Why would Nibali not ride the tour
1) Nibali knows better than to fight Contador and Froome in TDF with his odds of winning a 5 way (froome, contador, evans/van garderan, ryder, himself), race
2) He has battled Contador before in his national tour in 2011 where the climbs were harder and steeper than the tour and he lost (contador is better on not so steep but explosive short final climbs and giro in 2011 had many long and steep ones and yet he lost)
3) He got shown that how powerless he and his team is against team sky a few times this season...more reasons to not face Froome as he made TDF his main target this season and now the entire Team Sky is backing him, it might be possible if Wiggins was still in it and he can hope for infighting that will disrupt Team Sky...
he knows better to just stick his guns to winning the Giro and possibly the Vuelta in September and then try to win this years world championship which is held in his homeland italy...
not counting on fitness level peak or fatigue after winning the giro...statistically, no one had managed to win the giro - tour double since many many years back (marco pantani in the late 90's, and he is suspected to have doped doing that), not even contador in 2011 when the world watched him got dropped by Andy Schleck and then Cadel Evans in the centenary Galibier stage 18
so, i think the shark of messina is a wise shark for not trying to bite what he could not possibly swallow... furthermore, in a new team (astana) he needs to show his abilities by winning races rather than coming in 2nd or 3rd to other riders that might possibly be better... this will enable him to be the defacto leader in next year in order to defend or make an assault on whatever he wishes to choose..jus in case some hotshot comes into the team guns ablaze and shows him off...have to think of future prospects mar... i think lar...
