doesn't it feels odd, sharing a room with a complete stranger ?
*
Ya, like going back to school/uni dormitory.

I'd feel uncomfortable sharing an entire flat or house with a stranger.

Am I the only one getting increment (before conversion) coming to Sg?

It really depends on whether you're doing the same kind of job, in the same kind of company, with the same kind of expectations.

That's why it's important to negotiate a fair salary for the job that you will be doing. Rather than peg vs your last drawn in MY and deciding if that's a "FAIR" or "GOOD" deal.

But if you happen to find the same kind of job, in the same kind of company, with the same kind of expectations - I'd expect no less than 0.9X S$ to RM to represent a 'fair' minimum.

Not everyone have the fortunate high salary to live more independently n comfortably.

To paraphrase Fatt Kor (Chow Yun Fatt) in A Better Tomorrow when relating his experience of having a gun pointed at his head...

"I once lived with a stranger for a roommate. More than one roommate. It was such a bad experience that I almost shit my pants. Ever since... I told myself... I WILL NEVER LET A STRANGER SHARE MY ROOM AGAIN."

Cue white doves and diving across the room shooting 30+ shots out of a gun with a 12 bullet magazine and 1 in the chamber.

Ipoh; keeping my fingers crossed. Hope the end of air route monopoly. But not sure if Ipoh's runway can take A320.
*
The ATR-500's runway requirement at Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) is 4,265 feet, and at Maximum Landing Weight (MLW) is 3,500 feet.

The Airbus 320's runway requirement at Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) is 5,600 feet, and at Maximum Landing Weight (MLW) is 5,052 feet.

http://planes.findthebest.com/compare/124-...-vs-Airbus-A320

Ipoh's runway is 2,000 meters long (6,561 feet) - http://aip.dca.gov.my/aip%20pdf%20new/AIP%...PP%20201216.pdf

Should be okay... fingers crossed.

More air services should be promoted by MAHB itself to the airlines to complement the renovated terminal.
MAHB is thinking more about how much traffic they will lose in Seremban, if passengers from Ipoh and its surroundings can catch international flights out of Singapore instead of Seremban.

always has been considering to land in PEN instead but not worth the time/fare saved from it.
Landing in Penang, Subang or Seremban is no issue. Finding the transport to get home to Ipoh is the real problem.

The real beauty of flying out of Ipoh airport is the fact that the airport is a metropolitan airport in the middle of the city, like Subang. It takes less than 10 minutes to get from Ipoh airport to my house in Ipoh Garden. Sure beats taking a 3 hour Yoyo bus trip to Seremban to fly out of SIA.

or KLIA>KL Sentral>Taiping as now taxi charges rm140 for ipoh-taiping route.
*
I've done KLIA express from SIA to KL Sentral, and then ETS from KL Sentral to Ipoh train station.

Total time:.. w: Waiting time; j: Journey time

KLIA Express from SIA to KL Sentral (w: avg 15 minutes because of 30 minute departures, and j: 40 minutes)

ETS from KL Sentral to Ipoh train station (w: 1-2 hours because the schedule is 1 or 2 hours interval. Usually is 2-4 hours, because you will book a later train in case your flight in is delayed, and j: 2 hours 30 minutes).

So... just to get from SIA to Ipoh train station, you're looking at 6-8 hours ie. practically an entire day. So unless you land in SIA before lunch... you're not going to reach home before dinner.

Including the 2 hours from check in to take off, 1 hour flight and 30 minutes disembarkation to arrival hall/KLIA Express departure hall... you're practically leaving your house in SG first thing in the morning (eg. 9am or 10am flight) and only arriving home at your house in Ipoh at 5pm (if everything falls into place). Sucks to be you if your flight is delayed.

Global management consulting firm, Hay Group, says new graduates can expect to earn a higher starting base salary compared to last year's cohort.

It said they can expect two per cent more in their base salaries.

Hay said the average starting monthly pay for a general degree holder is about 2,700 dollars.

This goes up to almost 2,900 dollars for those with second upper honours.

The survey showed that one in six employers placed an average monthly premium of 185 dollars for local university graduates compared to non local university graduates.

Hay said its latest survey revealed that jobs in Project Management ranked at the top, commanding the highest average starting salary of 2,900 dollars a month for general degree holder, followed by jobs in Engineering and Research & Development.

How do you guys save your rainy day funds? StanChart bonu$saver seems the best so far at 1.88% as long as u swipe $500/mth on credit card. Anything better?
*
The cap on the savings that actually earns 1.88% is very low though. Only $25000.

After years of chasing bonus interest deals and opening bank accounts everywhere, I've recently restructured all my bank accounts to keep 99% of my funds in 2 banks. Maybank in My and CIMB in Sg. I have closed all my other accounts in My in order to make it easy to manage things online and when I'm back home. Maybank in Ipoh is near my house and plenty of parking. They also have a small self service branch in Aeon/Jusco where my family usually shops during weekends.

All my S$ funds is in CIMB, plus my home loan. The Star$aver account pays 0.88% (constant, no close ended bonus period etc) and the eligible savings cap is $750,000. Free cheque book also. They were the only bank in Sg that offered a reducing interest rate loan as well, which I took. And their Preferred Banking guys are really attentive. Their main branch at Knightsbridge Orchard is also close to my office.

Having said that I still have a POSB account for salary crediting and the ATM network. I also have a Maybank Sg e$aver account to connect back to my Maybank accounts back in My but only minimum balance to avoid paying fall below fee. I also have a World Partner account at Std Chartered but I only keep it because there's no fall below fees and also no other Internet banking portal allows you to pay any other banks credit card. This is great if you like to credit card surf for promotions. Btw Std Chartered relationship managers are total fail vs CIMB. Maybe too many seriously high net worth customers to attend to, so they ignore the lower end ones.

Convenience and simplicity is the key after a while. One, you don't have time to manage so many bank accounts, Pin codes etc. Secondly if something happens to you, you need to make it easy for your next of kin to get your money (especially if you don't have a will). When my dad passed, he had 15 savings and FD accounts, shares and no will. If I didn't know a lot of bank folks and remisiers from my audit days, and if I wasn't a good forger - it would have been much, much more painful and lots of time and legal fees to move his funds to my mum.

You may try SG REIT. The price for some REIT(s) drop quite a lot past month. I think it's time go in.

That may not necessarily be so.

The REITs are highly leveraged. If the interest rates go up like the CEO of DBS said they would (when he said home loans should be converted from floating to fixed now)... REITs will need to move cash away from paying dividends to paying interest.

hi guys, my gf will be working at SG soon, and I would like to visit her maybe twice every month and so, I most probably will stay for a night at her room (she stays with a local family and they approved of my stay but will be subjected to some minimal charges)

But I've heard some news that the authorities do not encourage such activity and they will question me, is it true?

or if there are any other implications on my action, please let me know =)
*

Seems like your gf is the renter, not you. You're just her guest for a regular pajama party or booty call.

If your name is not in the lease or rental agreement and you don't put that address in your IC, what's the problem?

If you were wondering where the recent 2.54, 2.55 exchange rates suddenly came from. It will weaken even further. The BN's corruption and mismanagement is finally catching up with the country.

which one will be better? in dilemma  doh.gif

If you have zero personal potential to grow beyond RM2.5K vs S$1.5K, will never get a car, will never commit and will never pay rental in MY = then choose the RM2.5K.

I will be based at Mcdermott office, at this link
https://maps.google.com.sg/maps?saddr=Lor+3...&sz=18&t=m&z=18
its so fortunate that around theres plenty of hdb that is within walking distance. Ive checked the cheapest room that i can get is at 400$, however most prefers locals and female LOL. anyway this is not the matter. As there are so many selections, which one is the best to live at? Maybe max around 600$, cheaper the better la of course.

In such a short time that i have to decide, i may not know the demographics, crime rates, ammenities, hdb facilities, etc etc... Thanks!
*
Stay near food and facilities. I would get a place as near to Toa Payoh Hub/Central as possible.

Does this report dispel the notion that Singapore is a very safe city? if true, this must be a rare occurrence thou'.

url link : Attempted Abduction At Vivocity

Post date: 12 Aug 2013 - 11:53pm

DEAR THE REAL SINGAPORE, MY COUSIN WAS ALMOST ABDUCTED AT VIVOCITY

Dear The Real Singapore,

Someone tried to kidnap my 6yr old cousin at Vivo City!

This is a true story, please help to spread the word around!

My dear cousin (6yrs old) was ALMOST abducted at VivoCity, at the basement near Candy Empire when the family was about to have their dinner. My aunt, was waiting for her husband (who went off to the toilet), when she noticed this suspicious looking guy, tall and very big-sized, with one of his hands carrying plastic bags. My aunt felt something was not right, so she immediately grabbed my cousin's hand and reminded my cousin to stay close to her, while my aunt held tightly to her pram with her second child on the other hand.

Just at that moment, the suspicious-looking guy headed towards my aunt and attempted to grab my cousin away from my aunt. My vigilant aunt pulled my cousin away by instinct and shouted "NO", hoping that guy would back-off. However, the guy not only did not back off, he attempted to grab my cousin again. My aunt then quickly pushed her pram and my cousin away towards a more crowded region. The guy continue to follow my aunt.

Thankfully, my uncle came out of the toilet at that moment and spotted this guy following my aunt. He then quickly went to my aunt's side. When the guy saw my uncle, he slowed down his steps and finally back off. My aunt and my 6yrs old cousin were so frightened and the whole family left VivoCity without having their dinner.

Everyone, sharing this story to remind all of you, always remain vigilant especially in crowded areas of Singapore, not only in VivoCity. In this way, we can ensure the safety of the kids and also prevent cases of kids abduction from happening.

Unless the 'kidnapper' has very little 'situational awareness', I find this story very hard to believe. There are so many cctvs around, there's no way they won't be able to identify the 'kidnapper'. And SG is unlike MY... I think there is zero chance that the kidnapper will be able to get out of Vivocity scott free, towing a screaming kid and a hysterical mother at his heels.

If you ask me... the road less travelled is typically the simplest explanation. I think if the writer's uncle were to ask his wife, who the real father of the child is... a lot of questions would be answered.

Anyone here who's finance/accounting trained and has at least 5-10 years post qualification experience? Direct dealings with business/sales/profit managers will be very advantageous. Working knowledge of petrochemistry (ie. I don't have to teach you what are hydrocarbons, C2, C3, PE, PP, what a refinery does, what a cracker does, feedstocks, derivatives etc) and business acumen (you instinctively understand profit and profitability, cash flow, cost benefit, P&L etc) required.

My biz will be hiring a finance manager next year when our new petrochem asset starts up. The role is essentially the finance biz partner to biz manager who has profit accountability for the biz unit assigned to you. You will be in charge of all financial matters relating to that biz unit. Upside is that you won't be doing any accounting entries as we buy services from corp controllers and corp treasury for transactional stuff. You essentially become the pseudo cfo of the biz unit (pseudo in the sense that you recommend, rather than decide). A one sentence job description is that you keep the biz unit mgt team focused on meeting their financial targets.

If you'd like to connect, do drop me a PM with your Linkedin profile. I'd like to take a look and keep track of your development over Linkedin for the next 12 months or so. So that when the time comes, I've got external candidates in mind. To be frank, I am asked to consider internal candidates first... so this may turn out to be kosong. But no harm linking up. We never know.
