Who is Manchester United transfer target Nampalys Mendy?

Nampalys Mendy is only 20 years old but be has already carved out a reputation for himself in Monaco, the playground of the rich and famous.

Now he has been linked with a move to Manchester United as a free agent after allowing his contract to expire. But who is the starlet set to shine in the Premier League?

Making up the most of his chances
Mendy has always been forced to work harder than his team-mates and opponents to gain recognition on the pitch because of his perceived lack of height and power.

He has twice been called upon to make up the numbers in trials and the first time this happened he was spotted and taken on by Monaco. Mendy was then picked to play for France at youth level when he excelled at a workout but was only called up because more senior players were playing in a tournament elsewhere.

Mendy has been described as a carbon copy of the former Chelsea defensive midfielder. Despite being blessed with a lightweight frame he is a heavyweight in the tackle, reads the game well and has crisp distribution, playing short accurate passes to set up counter-attacks after breaking up play.

Like United’s left-back, Mendy was born to parents from Senegal living in the south of France and has opted to play his international football for the country of his birth.

Mandy’s countryman joined Manchester United and was tipped for a stellar career at Old Trafford. But Pogba allowed his contract to run down before jumping ship to sign a contract at Juventus where he figured he would stand a better chance of regular first team football. He made 27 appearances for the Old Lady last season.

Mendy also appears to have decided to move to new pastures without consulting his current coach Claudio Ranieiri, possibly fearing Monaco’s new wealth will mean investment in star names who will block his path to regular playing time in Ligue 1 and eventually the Champions League.
