hi, seems like this is the only forum in LYN on VR gaming. and so little posts. meaning VR community here still at its infancy ka? after reading lots of news and reviews, decided to get an Oculus Quest soon.
*
Yeah.. VR in Malaysia is more costly than US. Not many people would like to use VR regularly.
You could check out reddit for a more lively community.
I would suggest to hold off Oculus quest unless your really know what you want and/or have the currency to splash.
Oculus Quest is a year old and as per most mobile hardware, goes out of date quick. Performance was always the bottle neck and battery life is only 2-3 hours.

Wrong.
First of all, Oculus Quest was released on May 21, 2019, not yet a year old.

Secondly, Quest is selling like hot cake and out of stock basically everywhere.
Oculus is struggling to manufacture enough of them, especially with recent coronavirus outbreak. https://uploadvr.com/facebook-coronavirus-quest/
So it is unlikely there will be new version from Oculus soon.

Thirdly, Quest is fully portable and you can play anywhere.
With new updates such as hand tracking and Oculus Link (use it with PC), it is one of the VR headset to buy at $399.
Valve Index at $999 might be better for quality but it is not portable, not to mention the difficulty in setting up the lighthouse, and you need a powerful PC.

Well if u must split hair, 8 months and 21 days. Oculus quest, though 1st Gen, utilized android/mobile hardware, snapdragon 835, which is from 2016/17? This hardware barely cope with most VR software and rely on heavy compromises. With the short battery life. I expect next Gen if it ever arrives, would be a huge leap in performance.

Selling out doesnt always means its good. Some accesories for vive and rift S and some WMR are also sold out now. Its just a marketing strat, especially suspicious when they allow "booking". I ve just got my oculus quest last week from online which went through china and arrived within a week via UPS.
Indeed new features/ software upgrades are being developed, but this also happens in other headsets, just with other focuses.

Oculus link, is still in beta with huge compromises. Latency is the biggest issue. This is masked with reprojections and drawing controllers on the headset side. Experience vr owners will notice these reprojections, especially the rotational reprojection types. It is more obvious when throwing an item, as the controller position and the timing of button release doesnt match up.
Adding a repeater to extend the cable only makes this worst.

I m just giving my opinion. U can proceed to pre-order a new quest or perhaps buy a 2nd hand to try it out.
Feel free to ask us anything further. The lowyat community is small but most of us are helpful.

Do you guys know any recommended seller in Malaysia for VR?

Or it is better to ship from oversea?
*
If u already know what u want, u could order online from local or oversea. Both has its advantages.

But if u are still unsure and have not tested VR yet, u may want to try some locally. U could go to a VR cafe or theme park and try some out yourself. Some local seller may also allow u to try it out

Yeah, I am aiming for HTC Vive due to I mainly game on Steam, much compatibility from review (I admit I not yet test any before).

Talked to their support after that post I made, they gave me links to order online through Shopee.
*
HTC is pretty much all rounder for SteamVR. Cant really go wrong with that. It has IPD adjustment and Lens to eye distance adjustment. Alot of accessories like trackers and DAS and wireless adapters. Cheap protective accessories are also available online.
However there is a trackpad hardware issue due to the design. Both my controllers were eventually. Good news is, its easily fixable and reinforced.
Another downside is, the warranty service seems to be pretty bad.
Another common complaint bout the vive is the weight on the cheeks due to the design.
U can easily try the Vive out in most VR cafes or arcade first.

Hey guys, was wondering if the oculus quest is heavy or straining after use? I'm mainly going to play it for PCVR. I was planning on getting the rift s but due to stock issues seems impossible for now. My head and body is pretty small, so I'm afraid if the quest will be uncomfortably heavy. Thanks a lot.
*
Depends on how u wear it. But by default design, its gonna press really hard on the cheeks, especialy for small size users. U could off set the weight by creating a tilt, and changing the face pad to something broad based.
Im relatively small size too.

itching to grab Oculus Quest 2
but can't decide between 64Gb and 256Gb

is 64Gb sufficient or would 256gb be too much? hmm.gif
*
As mobile apps are still quite light, 64gb is still okay ish.
But if ur going to be putting lots of movies/3d/360 videos for trips, or intend to keep lots of apps/beat saber songs installed, then go for the 256gb.
But imho really 64gb is still ok ish to last for 2-4 years till the battery is dead or outdated.

thanks, that helps a lot, guess I'm gonna grab the 64gb version then, use the rest of the budget for the accessories which aren't cheap

btw, what are the average sizes for most of the apps and 3D movies?
*
Beat saber is about 700+mb but custom songs will add on alot. Arizona sunshine(one of the longest coop game) is <5gb.
Richie Plank is <500mb.
Good quality 3D stereoscopic movies will be about 2gb each? Going too high resolution is redundant due to the limitation of the hmd's resolution.
If ur into 360 cameras, then ull probably consume the storage pretty quick.

If you're planning to get Halo type strap for your Oculus Quest 2, get this one - BoboVR M2. Much better than the normal Halo strap.

*
Any idea the weight of this strap?

Hi Guys,

May I seek for your opinion please? Coming from the first gen PSVR in PS4 years ago, now I’m thinking to try the VR world again.

Last time the PSVR experience really shitty (very bad graphics and resolution, limited games etc.) so I stopped using it after only a few times playing it when it was launched. Thought VR was going to be dead at that time.

Has VR gaming improved to a level that now it is enjoyable?

What is the absolute best VR gear that I can buy now to go back into VR gaming? I have dedicated room / space for VR gaming setup so appreciate if you have some advise for me.

Thank you
*
Right now? Probably the oculus quest 2, if u dont mind selling out ur data for fb. Seeing that it now supports steamvr via airlink/ cable link methods. Fair investment that isnt too expensive.
But if we re talking about the absolute best VR gear.. thats probably either a Valve Index, or HTC cosmos elite+wireless + steamvr knuckle if u must have wireless.
But VR content has pretty much plateaued. the last big thing to me was probably Half life alyx.
Beat saber and VRchat is still a thing.
Pavlov is like CS in VR while Onwards is abit more of CoD?
There are some coop VR games like Arizona sunshine and Serious Sam. Or Crisis VRigade 2, if u like Virtual cop/time crisis style.
But before buying all those, make sure u have a decent rig with a decent CPU.

I would avoid PSVR, not because its bad.. but rather the contents are pretty expensive for our region. Also the controller trackings is bad and its only 180 degree tracking.

I play mostly driving sims and, try as I might, I really don't care for roomscale VR games.

Now that I have finally managed to build a rig that's powerful enough to run a VR headset, I'm going to finally take the plunge.

Against popular opinion, imma gonna take the Pimax route since I can't stand driving while looking through a peephole.
*
great to know someone joining our VR group and hopefully provide feedback about the Pimax current state.
The high Fov is always tricky to deploy given that everyone's head-shape and eyeball shape and rotations are vastly different from one another.
and what seems normal to one user, will have optical distortion in another user. (hence why normal eye spectacles do not have that high FOV).

Drop us a feedback. I was also looking into the pimax earlier.

What kind of base stations & controllers will I need to work with a Pimax? Can I get away with having just 1 base station to operate both controllers in a sitting game like Battlegroup VR?
*
Yes u actually can. A well position base station should cover most areas. Just remember the lighthouses must be sufficiently above ur heights, looking down. Minor obscure are often compensated with prediction, so it should be ok.

Noticed how some VR arcade only use 1 base station for beat saber( and apps that require 180deg only)

What's the budget entry option for PC currently? Oculus Quest 2 still recommended or not (will it lose access to PC gaming next year?)
*
Quest 2 is still a good choice as a budget. It will only cost only usd 299 and ur privacy to facebook. May consider getting a good 5GHz router if u want to wireless to pc or usb type c if u want to play wired to pc.

Thanks. For Quest 2 the annoying thing is that they don't have an RGB camera (for AR, since that's not what it's designed for). But the price is good I guess.
*
Sadly AR is still very primitive. Quest 1-2 isnt actually AR as AR is more complex than that. Due to the unnatural distance between the cameras compared to the user ipd.

U might need to get something like the microsoft hololens 2.
