i have a student that do 3D printing services.

yes, u give the 3D file, then he will print it for u according to the scale u prefer. sometimes, to make it more efficient, some editing will be done to maximise the outcome.

he charges based on plastic weight (in grams). any editing on his part will incurr extra cost as well.

he bought the machine himself (just like anyone would by a normal inkjet printer) and keeps it in his room biggrin.gif.

3D modeling is an industry on its own. so yeah, definitely have to pay more. but most of our students are focused on architectural modeling, not character modeling. so i dont think he's able to do it.

the university currently has three, fully accessible to all students under the Center of Student Innovation (CSI). most engineering students will use the machines for prototyping. i heard they're buying another 3, because the demand is very high, the queue very long. that's why my student bought one on his own. kiasu tempias dari singapore very strong one!

no, he didnt drive the impreza lol. just kancil bikin aje.

i mean think about it. some parents would buy their children anything. the 3D printer costs slightly more than a good gaming laptop. so no biggie.

and this guy is not just buying it for fun. it's for business wink.gif.

do you guys think 3D printing is a viable venture?

Buy a good 3D printing machine
set up website
offer 3D printing service

while 3D designing service can be offered
We do have lots of engineering student that learn CAD program (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Pro|Engineer, etc)
if we can convert those files to be readable by the 3D machine
im pretty sure there is a huge engineering student market out there

well, it's a start.
At least can create some basic item.
Of course I don't expect the student to straight create a figure model from AutoCAD laugh.gif
Possible, but very hard

It would be motivation for the student to learn rendering software.

i am thinking about creating mould for engine parts using 3d printed mould to create sand casting mould

for example like producing engine parts of certain engine..rare and hard to find parts
*
lol what? sand casting?
that's a bit too heavy on the industry side blink.gif

you will need some serious workshop if you want to do sand casting.

yes interior knob should be steel surface, not plastic..

i mean if we 3d print plastic for the exterior parts, can also make it satin finish.

need quite a lot of equipment/material
that's why i said it's a bit heavy on the industry side

unless you plan to make it a regular thing
might as well just print the plastice model and take it to a local small factory
at least they might have better quality control there laugh.gif

Just for public awareness, it is also not as resilient as traditional CNC'ed metal parts. Metal 3D Printers do not have sufficient packing density so depending on what you are looking for it may not be applicable.

For example, Metal SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) uses metal powders, fused together to form the 3D part. The strength of the bond is not as tight since there is a lack of pressure, compared to a CNC metal block which is one full solid metal block made under high temperature and pressure.
