VLC always got random problems like this . Once , i got np audio but video was working normally on stock player . I  switched to MX player n never look back . Give it a try .

I'm using MX Player too, plays all subs in my videos.
There's a setting, you have to tick 'enable embedded subtitles'.
Watching Gokusen and Shippuden.

Actually (OT a bit but still relevant) speaking about food, I have a large appetite. However since portions in Malaysia are "normal" to us, I typically consume the normal Malaysian portion, plus maybe a little bit more sometimes.

Then I was posted to the US for a while. The "normal" portion there is AT LEAST 1.5x ours, and very often it can be 2x the Malaysian portion.
