Hurm... m17x would be way beyond my budget ady.. Considering that im doing light stuff this would suit the purpose. Oh yeah. What about the power consumption for these laptops? i realize the power consumption used by these processors are much lower as compared to my i5 rig.

because they are ultrabooks, so the processors are tweaked at a weaker state to compete with core i5 ULV processors to save battery life.

only ultrabooks and some certain models do come with core i5 ULV. however, like dell's new inspiron models which comes with core i ULV processors, they are not suitable in the ultrabook category.

to differentiate between ULV and normal processors, at the end of the model number are labelled with U (for ULV) or M/QM (normal dual/quad core).

Studies only? then you can let your parents consider these:

Dell Inspiron 14-3421, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1649[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 6-cell; W8SL@RM1899
ASUS [Ultrabook]K46CM-WX060V, B987 + Nvidia GT630M@RM1699[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
Lenovo G480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899, 4GB, 1TB (5400rpm), W8, 2 yrs warranty
Samsung NP370R4E, i3-3110M + Intel HD4000@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB, W8

prices are RSP and negotiable. if you have the spare budget, use it to upgrade RAM to 4GB (for some models suggested) and extend warranty to 3 years for peace of mind. icon_rolleyes.gif

Budget: RM2,000 to RM2,500(The cheaper the better)

Of course the laptop is more focused on studies... But sometimes he will also play some games like Dota 2 etc.. So any other suggestions? he has a Galaxy S3 also, so will a Samsung laptop benefit him even more?

no benefit but samsung does comes with tons of bloatwares. so talk frankly, your laptop will be a hella slower. lenovo so far has the best spec at here. you should let him consider.
