Is asus's after sale service really that bad?
I was set on g55 before, now quite worried.
I live really far from kl. damnit.
*
yes. ASUS after sales service is a nightmare. so it is suggested to get dell, or if the person insists on getting ASUS, he/she have to pray hard for it.

1. Preferred Brand - no actual prefered brand
2. Budget - RM2500+-
3. Usage - Mostly work such as word and all. maybe some movie on the go
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 15 inch or less

I had my eye on samsung ativ xe500 or maybe surface rt due to the small form factor and tablet feature to replace my aging motorola xoom tablet. though for surface rt software limitation might be an issue since its not a full fledge windows 8.
is it worth to go for notebook tablet hybrid or should i stick with an ultrabook which pretty much portable with larger screen size campared to those two. Havin a touch screen feature would be a plus. My previous experience with windows 8 shows that the interface are touch screen friendly rather thank the conventional mouse.

any advice are much appreciated

not really worth for going to hybrids as hybrids are very expensive (cheapest, the yoga 13 is priced at RM3400). microsoft surface RT or pro is ok so far but if you can wait for surface pro then it will be better.

hi mate thanks for reply
may i know what is the meaning of Free DOS and swappable ODD?

i heard a lot of reviews about lenovo Y series at LYN

is this laptop suit my criteria and best bang for buck?

regards.
*
freeDOS = no windows/OS
swappable ODD = removable optical drive, means you can remove the DVD and insert a graphics card, external fan or HDD ODD into it.

and yes. the lenovo y series is the best bang for buck gaming laptop.

QUOTE(GTOld @ May 13 2013, 04:49 PM)
Hello, very useful thread this. Also need help to decide on best laptop for my needs. Too easy to get carried away with toys available today & blow the budget.

1. Brand - Any with good reputation for durability
2. Budget - 1.5k to 2.5k
3. Usage - Primarily work 3D CAD software (Solidworks/Catia/UG) possibly some engineering analysis / simulation tools.
4. Min 14" (Antiglare as use outside often.)

Would like SSD for rapid boot up, HDD size not too important, need good graphic card with own ram, need 8GB RAM, Backlit keyboard nice to have, ODD optional (already have an external one), long battery life.
Software appears to be designed for XP and compatible with W7...will it run W8 OK or am I better sticking with W7?

Thanks GTOld.

Need recomendation
1. budget - not more than 2.5k
2. Preferred Brand - as long as it's last or have good after sales service
2. Budget - not more than 2.5k
3. Usage - microsoft office, dota or CS, watching movie and online
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 15.6'
*

1. Brand - Any with good reputation for durability. prefer HP
2. Budget - 2.5k-3k
3. Usage - normal usage , surfing, gaming
4. Min 15.6"
*
guys, take a look at these. smile.gif

Lenovo Z500, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2299[2.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, backlit, W8; 2 years warranty
Dell Inspiron 15R, i7-3537U + AMD HD8730M@RM2499[2.32kg], 6GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL

GTOld if you plan for dual boot system, you can buy a mSATA SSD and install it into your laptop so you dont need to sacrifice your HDD for SSD. for the RAM, get an extra 4GB stick (RM80) and install it into your laptop. windows 8 is stable now but i dont see the need of 8GB in windows 8, as 4GB is pretty good enough for multitasking in windows 8 (im a windows 8 user, so i know). smile.gif

QUOTE(PadeGP @ May 15 2013, 08:50 PM)
need advice from sifu's here as i need to make decision & buy before end of this week....
stuck between two :

1. Samsung Ativ pro (i5-3317) - 3g model
2. XPS 13 (i5-3317)

i'm more for surfing, web browsing, email, ms office, chatting, watching movies, youtube & lite download.

thinking ativ pro more than xps 13 bcoz can be a tablet so that i can lie down on bed while web browsing, watching movies & youtube

ativ - 11.6" (1920x1080) & touch screen
xps 13 - 13.3"(1366x768)

does 1366x768 a let down for youtube & watching movies?
does touch screen really important & a let down without touch screen
*
if you are more on watching movies and office usage, just get an ultrabook and save the remaining budget and touch screen budget for your future planning. it is not worth to spend on a hybrid like samsung ativ pro at the moment as microsoft just planned to move into tablets market. also, 1366x768 will limit full HD videos to this screen size but it is not a let down if you are just watching 720p videos only. btw, some ultrabooks that worth your penny :

HP [Ultrabook] Envy SpectreXT 13-2215TU, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM2899[1.39kg], 4GB, W8,backlit keyboard
Samsung [Ultrabook] NP530U3C, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2699[1.52kg], 4GB, W8
ASUS [Ultrabook] UX31A-R4005H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM3599[1.3kg], 4GB, W8

if 2kg, it is still possible then.

Guys im ordering Lenovo Y series within this week.
Im considering should get the Y400(freedos RM2.4K) or Y500(RM2.9K).  Windows is not the matters, just the size and price.
Any suggestion?

Thank you very much.
*
if you prefer full HD and better cooling, Y500 is the right deal.
if you prefer something lighter, Y400 is the right deal.

why does y500 has better cooling?
is it because it's bigger or it has different build? hmm.gif

because it is bigger. you have more room for cooling inside the laptop.

Y500 will be better, as there are more spacing inside the laptop for cooling.
