In UK, they are also complaining about the lowering teaching quality nowadays. Only in Malaysia are we completely satisfied about our new medical school  sad.gif

*
the uk have increased their total intake, and output of doctors by 50% over the last 10 years, from increased intakes in established med schools, and new med schools.........so there is bound to be issues during this transition period........

the 'surplus' is actually a mismatch between the numbers graduating and the established posts available, which is a british civil service/administration problem (ala jpa issues), rather than actually having too many doctors.......when the ewtd (european working time directive) kicks in and shift duties is implemented, the numbers of required posts will balloon, and more than absorb the graduating numbers........whether there is money in the nhs for this is another issue........

and how the ewtd will influence post graduate training is also a different issue......

the situation is no where as chaotic as the current situation in msia......and at least they don't have a problem with basic intake issues, as the med schools are all public funded.......they can select based on academic merits........not on 'financial merits'.........so there is not the doubts about the calibre of new graduates like in msia........

150kg and bp 150/90 at 20 years old is a perfect recipe for a potential ischaemic event by 40.........serious attention and correction is required........

but they will not discriminate against you on the basis of weight or bp.........smile.gif

if that's the worse u can expect, then don't worry...there are 120 places annually

but in any case if you're still worried, just sit thru the foundation course lah...should be a peace of cake since you've been thru stpm...

this is coz stpm results should be around april? the mbbs intake is in september...and if u get 3.92..straight apply for UMS or UNIMAS lah =)
*
if you have above 3.8, and put ums or unimas as 1st choice, you stand a good chance.......this is proven in recent intake batches.......

I think u only saw the tip of the iceberg, there are many more rejects out there who got the same results and put Unimas/UMS as their 1st choice. so there's a slim chance someone wif 3.83/4 will get into medicine.
*
i wouldn't be surprised, but there are quite a few sub-4.0 around, and i know they only look at those who put unimas as 1st choice in the first round.......

my point is, if one is sub-4.0, it is better to just opt for the lower rank schools, rather than try um/ukm as top choices, and NOT getting anything at all in the end........

i thought the final results are usually BETTER than trial results?.......at least in the schools i am familiar with, they tend to mark down the trials, to make the student work harder........

so maybe you will bet 4.0!!

what you have studied in stpm is significantly more, and the stpm exam more difficult, than what is taught and tested in foundation studies.......aimst, or whatever uni.......

i make no apologies for demanding the best from medical students and future doctors, and i will be very disappointed if there are medical students here who are willing to compromise on standards and quality........

Well, what can you do then? Are you a lawmaker or something?

If you can't change anything, learn to live with it. doh.gif If you really can't, then move somewhere else. Complaining non-stop here won't change anything. whistling.gif

if everybody is like that! doh.gif

that explains why this country is in this condition........fortunately, there are enough people around who feels motivated and concerned enough to want to effect change.......

one can justify anything, if one is convinced one is right.......even murderers may believe they have done the world good, in their misguided minds........

i have explained the mess of msian education, which i think all are aware of.......the racial discrimination in ipta, the financial discrimination in ipts........and we are all aware the situation in ipts exist as a counterweight to ipta......

but 2 wrongs DO NOT make a right........

i have made my stance clear.......and i do not agree with the self gratifying justification above.......i am obviously NOT alone in this........countries like uk, oz, usa, spore all practice strict vetting of potential doctors entering training........

if i am wrong, i guess these developed countries are also wrong.....well.....their education policy must be more messed up than msia's.......but strangely, msian who can afford it, all seem to prefer to go to these countries.........

so who is right and wrong?

i accept, under the circumstances in msia, it is impossible to change to a more coherent education masterplan, so things will continue to evolve along uneven lines.......that doesn't mean we should NOT strive to improve the situation.......

yes, of course the end product is important...there will be many good doctors trained, together with some bad ones.....but if toyota can implement a 'zero defect' policy in their assembly lines, should we not also strive to have a zero-defect policy in doctor training?........

if so, then tell me what can be done to attempt a zero-defect production.......?....toyota uses a strict zero defect acceptance of parts as one of the measures.........

the final key word here is QUALITY.......justification that everybody should be given a chance is not QUALITY......it's MEDIOCRITY of the lowest common denominator, which is what msia education is both ipta and ipts, unfortunately......

Added on March 7, 2009, 8:35 amas a side note.....notice i did not mention about nz........

well, nz implements a policy of giving everybody a chance.....just like what some wants here......everybody with a pass in ncea (their pre-u) can enter health sciences 1st year.........so they take in some 1200 students in auckland u.......

there are however 250 places in medicine.........so the 1200 people fight to get into 250 places........

maybe we should try that system........fair or not?........everybody, no matter your pre-u results as long as you passed, have a fair go at it........
