It's a Free-to-play Trading Card game, similar to online Magic the Gathering. Today at Blizzard's PAX East panel, the company announced Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. The collectible card strategy game is Blizzard's first stab at the free-to-play model, allowing players to compete as heroes from nine WoW classes, all set in the Warcraft universe.

In a series of video demonstrations, Blizzard showed off opening a "pack" of cards, trashing duplicate cards to make a more powerful one, and the deck-building tools. The game will either suggest cards that you might want to put in your deck, or just auto-create a deck by type. Playing one-on-one online battles will boost your medal ranking, which is managed through Battle.net. The game is aiming for a spectator element as well, as Blizzard showed off a game match with shoutcasting commentary.

I think it's quite a refreshing idea to tap into the dying Warcraft franchise. It's still too early to tell whether this game will make or break so let's give them some time to polish the game up & see what they're capable of.

Diablo 3 was quite a flop & surprisingly, HotS seems to generate quite a lot of positive feedback. WarCraft on the other hand is hanging on a thread since the only thing that's keeping it from dying at this point in time is the MMORPG itself, which I'm afraid is no longer the MMORPG-of-all-MMORPGs as it was in the past.

Diablo 3 flop? They sold 12M units last i heard.. They basically screwed up PC players.. Now they are clearly heading the "console" crowd .. I'd be LOL if console didn't do well as the PC and Bliz end up pissed off its own core players while trying to appeal to a different crowd.

Flop as in the initial reviews were not exactly encouraging & the subsequent player feedback were pretty much inflammatory as well. If we were to compare the game to Diablo 2, I think most would agree that Diablo 3 went off the radar pretty fast.

Looking at the last few major releases by Blizzard, they were all packaged along with high expectations since they were all sequels to very successful franchises. Perhaps Blizzard is taking a gamble this time around by coming up with a game that lacks the initial oomph & thus, giving them the chance to pack a surprise once the game is officially out?

All I'm saying is that we're better off giving them the time they need to polish up the game before deciding its fate.

P.S. Not a Blizzard fanboy here.

I'll stick with Shadow Era and MtG.

it's dumbed down version for kids.

HotS is surprisingly very very good expansion. It is not exactly the raw amount of content added like how good Forged Alliance or DoW: Dark Crusade was, but it is all the fine tuning and little additions in HotS made it a really good expansion.

Not to forget that this expansion rejuvenated the whole professional scene and made the game whole lot more interesting. If this expansion pack manage to revive the dead custom map scene, this is definitely one of the best RTS expansion I ever had then.

Diablo 3, it did well because Diablo 2 was a fantastic game, so, people bought it based on the merits of the old game. No doubt that the gameplay is much better, compared to to other ARPGs, but it was ruined by the RMAH and the whole Always Online crap. If they remove RMAH and Always Online in the upcoming Diablo 3 expansion, i'll queue up to buy the expansion as the core game itself is excellent.

If i want an APRG that is closer to what D2 was, I'll play PoE or Torchlight 2, but if I want a modernised ARPG, Diablo 3 will be a great choice if they dump the shitty RMAH and Always Online.

No harm signing up for beta. Give it a try (if you got invited) and see how the game goes

As i said, if they even tune down their always online crap and remove the whole RMAH crap, I wont mind buying their upcoming expansion.

If you have, you can tell from the lack of complexity in Hearthstone that it's very different, more like a kid's game. It's as if Blizzard is afraid the audience is too stupid to grasp some of the mechanics, so they reduce it.

the wow tcg has both depth and complexity, while Hearthstone has neither.

They made it clear they are making Hearthstone simplified to make it playable during lunch break or tea time

There is no interrupt or any complex stacking/phase like MTG

Having played MTG myself competitively, i also find Hearthstone quite simple but then i'm fine with it. If i want a more complex game, there are plenty to choose from such as Shadow Era or the M&M one.

I will still play Hearthstone even if it is simple because the reason is simple....i love WoW lore and the characters

Hearthstone is online and more casual and imo easier for new players who are not familiar with CCG/TCG to play

Anyway, I am sure Blizzard will some how tie this game into WoW in order to boost the player base with promotions like gain 10 booster packs with 1 year WoW subscription or play WoW, complete certain feat and gain codes to claim cards in this game.

How good is Hex business model is still unknown, last time I heard, you can gain everything PvE from the game but you need to pay real money for anything that can be used in PvP.

I love TCGs but i don't have much time to play them which is why a 15 minutes game of Hearthstone is suitable for people like me

I tried it a little long time ago. Don't really like it because i feel it's a rip off from MTG or maybe its cause the game setting is a little dark theme. I prefer light color and funny stuffs that brighten up my day haha

The name of the game is Shadow Era, of course it is going to be a it dark.

I don't care about the settings of a TCG, it is the gameplay and the artwork that I am most interested in. There are some funny little things in Shadow Era as well, most of it is in the flavour text.

I think Hex is aiming to be played faster than MTG but slower than games like Hearthstone and Shadow Era, so those that thinks MTG is too slow and boring can try it out.

Also, if you got 200+ USD in Bnet account, that is a no brainer what game you should play, unless you want to save the money for future D3 expansion or WoW expansion and time card.

Can't be sure of the possibility but it doesn't seem to have any option to trade cards. Seriously i have no other friends playing Hearthstone to confirm this.

It's a CCG (Collectible Card Game), not a TCG (Trading Card Game). So as far as I know, there's no trading possible.

no trading, you craft the cards you want...however, scrolls is a ccg too but can trade / sell cards with in game gold =D

if cards is tradable bliz will surely make auction house too. imagine all those rare cards selling for 250usd hehe

IINM, SEA region is eligible for the beta opt-in but not the Facebook sweepstake so I guess the answer should be yes.

To be honest, the term CCG & TCG doesn't hold much difference these days as they're more or less the same now. Since it's Blizzard that we're speaking of here, there's a big chance that they'll want to monetize the entire experience like what they've did to Diablo 3.

I don't know about you guys but I think Blizz is putting themselves in a contradicting position.

On one hand, they're marketing Hearthstone as a quick-simple-to-grasp card game that leans away from all the complexity shared by their TCG/CCG brethren such as MtG.

On the other hand, it's very clear that the only logical path to have the game continuously developed & maintained is to charge consumers for newly released cards (unless they come up with some unique kind of subscription) which will inadvertently introduce new mechanics & meta into the game. This usually spell disaster for newcomers who picked up the game late as they'll have quite a lot of info to learn before they can confidently jump into the game.
