First Look at Our Next Game: Transistor
QUOTE
We are very, very excited to reveal today a new game we’ve been working on here at Supergiant, a science-fiction-themed action RPG we’re calling Transistor. We’ll have an early build playable this week at PAX East at our booth #892, and right now, we have our reveal trailer! Check it out and read on.

Transistor invites players to wield an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin as they explore a stunning futuristic city. We’re designing our next game to seamlessly integrate thoughtful strategic planning into a fast-paced action experience, complete with our studio’s signature melding of responsive gameplay and rich atmospheric storytelling. All of us from the Bastion development team are working together again on this new project, with the aid of a handful of talented new people who’ve joined us since Bastion’s launch.

In Transistor, players assume the role of a young woman who gains control of a powerful weapon after a mysterious group of assailants nearly kills her with it. Now she must fight from street to street against forces that will stop at nothing to recover the weapon. During the course of the adventure, players will piece together the Transistor’s mysteries as they pursue its former owners.

We expect Transistor to be released in early 2014. We have not yet decided on which platform or platforms the game will be available for.

We know you’ll have a lot of questions about Transistor, so we’ll be putting together a FAQ that addresses them, as well as answering more via Twitter and Facebook — and in person at PAX East this week! And now that the cat’s out of the bag, we’ll be keeping you posted on how development is coming along in the weeks and months to come. We can’t wait to hear what you think!

Screenies galore:

Very nice and charming art style. It's minimalist yet the world look colourful, lively and with smooth animation. I don't really mind all the fancy graphic, it's the art style that matter to my eyes. Just like Driftmoon, The Showdown Effect, La Mulana, Incredipede, Defender's Quest and Bastion.

Tweeted Greg Kasavin of Supergiant Games & suggested him to put the game up in Steam's Early Access program. He replied that they've yet to decide the game platform so just gotta wait for now. sad.gif

Oh you're looking for ways to give them more money? Sure, get me this pl0x: http://store.supergiantgames.com/collectio.../bastion-bundle

I'll update this thread if I happened to get more news, especially with PAX is currently underway. Pretty sure we'll be getting some reviews soon if there's no NDA in place.

TB's WTF on Transistor.

Looks like it is a mixture of action and turn based. Still a bit disappointed, but I am still excited with the game. I just have a feeling that the universe wont be as mysterious or unique as Bastion.

Thanks for the posting the videos up. Was out the entire day for breastfeeding class & didn't get much time to read the early reviews & videos.

I think Supergiant Games still have quite a bit of polishing up to do or else they'll risk not having Transistor live up to Bastion's success. But I sincerely think that TB is very helpful with his PSA that this build is not final & the whole thing might even change 180° by the time it goes gold.

As usual, I'm head over heels with Jen Zee's awesome artwork. I don't even now how she tap into her imagination to come up with all the lighting effects & at the same time, differs so much from what she did with Bastion. wub.gif

Still got one more, raw gameplay footage without any commentary for the PAX East 2013 preview.

I know that this is a very very early footage, but from what I seen so far, I am a bit mixed about it. It feels like Transistor talks too much while the gameplay seemed to lean a bit more towards to the more tactical bit. Nothing's wrong with that, as it is an interesting twist on ARPG.

Still, the art style and music in general are amazing.

at first, i was a bit disappointed because supergiant games doesnt do anything new. everything looks like bastion except in a different setting. but after looking at the uncommented TB video, i began to remember why bastion left a very great impact. it's the music and story telling through voice.

Come to think of it, what made Bastion great? Was the gameplay actually holding up the game? Or it was the music, art style and sound design in general? I think it was the later, as gameplay wise, I know it is good and solid fun to play, but there are times it felt a bit lack of depth.

At the end, it was the art style, music and sound design that made the game memorable for me. Transistor seemed to have similar style as Bastion, except even better gameplay.

Transistor Coming to PS4 and Steam

QUOTE
One of the most common questions we get about our next game is, which platforms is it coming to? Today we’re excited to have a specific answer for you at last: When Transistor is released sometime early next year, it will be available day one for PlayStation 4, and for PC on Steam. We plan to bring the game to Linux and Mac afterwards, and haven’t ruled anything out beyond that.

It’s no coincidence we’re making this announcement now during the week of the big Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Sony gave us the opportunity to show our game in their booth this week, where we’ll be on hand with an early playable build. After an amazing PAX East, it’s going to be great letting a whole new slew of players try the game at E3 — but back to the topic at hand!

Even before we announced Transistor earlier this year, we’d been giving a lot of thought to which platform or platforms would make the best home for the game. It’s a big decision that can influence aspects of the game’s design and can ultimately have a lot to do with its overall success. By focusing on the PlayStation 4 and PC as our launch platforms, we think we’ll be able to reach many of our existing fans right from the start, while letting us focus on delivering the best game possible at launch.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Supergiant art director Jen Zee created this piece, “Cloudbank”, which is being featured in the Into the Pixel exhibition at E3 this year!

You may know that our first game, Bastion, is available for more than six different platforms at this point. But it started on just one. We were still working on new versions of Bastion more than a year after the initial launch on Xbox LIVE Arcade. The main reason Bastion ended up in so many places, of course, is because a lot of people liked the game. And the main reason a lot of people liked it is because we were able to create the game we wanted to make in the first place, by not spreading our focus too thin and making sure Bastion ran great on XBLA, then on Steam, and so on. So, in short: Our strategy of focusing on a console/PC launch worked well on Bastion so we’re doing it again on Transistor.

If you have more questions, please check our newly minted Transistor FAQ, or contact us on Twitter, Facebook, or right here on our web site! Lastly, if you’d like us to notify you when the game is out, we invite you to join our mailing list.

My god, Sony has been going after so many indie developers that I love.

It will be really hard to resist buying the new PS4.

If Star Citizen and Project CARS, probably most advanced crowd funded games, is launching on PS4 too, I think i can really hats off to Sony for pulling so many great games from PC.

Not trying to derail the thread but Sony has just literally triumphed the console war so it looks like you're not the only one they've won over.

Finished the game last night. Short and sweet. Recursion helps if you enjoy the gameplay.

Breach() too stronk. 402 damage with backstab and unmask.

Yes, me like stab back, bash bash bash.

Not able to play, these performance issues are hindering the entire gameplay experience.

But, they have a great support on the Steam forum on these issues, all of them somehow reduce the issue but wasn't able to give 100% cure.

I'm still getting constant update from time to time.

Edit: Sad, last update was pretty okay for me, this time the game went back, stutter.

To be honest, screenshots or videos doesnt do the game any justice.

You have to actually see the game right in front of your monitor only you can appreciate the beauty of this game. The soundtrack literally blows Bastion's one out of the water.

1 hour in, man, I am still completely lost. The game doesnt explain itself very well, IMO.

I don't know, I think I'm still waiting for that particular moment where I slowly grow fond of the soundtrack. I'm still leaning towards Bastion's at the moment but perhaps I just need to reach the end of the game to appreciate the soundtrack, just like how I did for Bastion.

Some songs / pieces are meant to compliment the plot (Bastion's ending with Setting Sail, Coming Home is definitely 1 of the most effective combo) so there's a big chance Transistor falls into the same category. wub.gif

I think I literally feel in love with the soundtrack right at the opening where I just sat there and listen to it for about half an hour.

Maybe it is because I liked bands like Explosion in the Sky as the opening track is similar to their work. Dont think there are any spoilers as it is very much just an instrumental track.

I find the game starts off a bit slow though. It is very lacking of the charm that Bastion gives right at the beginning , like what Rukus said in the opening. Transistor's first hour is rather bland since its just combat after combat.

Still, up to a certain point when a cutscene, the game gets very interesting.

Rukus? It's Rucks! biggrin.gif

Anyway, have you finished the game? I finally finished it last night & TBH, there are a lot of questions that weren't answered.

*cough* spine of the world *cough*

Overall, I think this is definitely a better game than Bastion & the whole Cloudbank adds so much depth compared to Bastion's Caelondia vs. Ura backdrop.

Any plan to write a review to save this great game from the 3rd page? sad.gif

Yeah, I just finished last week. I think its a pretty good game, possibly game of the year candidate so far as I had not played anything as good as Transistor this year.

I like that the art style and soundtrack are vastly improved in my opinion. Gameplay in general is pretty good too but a few enemies have been rather annoying to fight such as Fetch, Snap and Man. I really dislike those 3 enemies.

I dont think i'll write another review. It is just a waste of time as no one will read it anyway.

Spoiler ahead.

I just want to replay Transistor again to pick up all the small details. There are people claiming that Supergiant used the songs for storytelling which I had missed it.

The terminals, read everything. Skills, equip them at all slots, Main, Upgrade, Passive, to unlock more background stories of that skill. And this is why recursion is worth playing.

Also, Stealth(), Cull() with 2 upgrades Spark() and the explosive one + backstab = instagib AOE, 5k points when training.

If die, first thing that breaks also is Cull(), cause 4Mem.

It was surprisingly short tho. I think I spend a lot more time on Bastion. After one play through, Steam tells me I have 7.7 hours played.

Bastion has... collect this core. then this core. then this core. then this core. orait core broken, this shard, now this shard, go next shard.

Seriously. if not of the combat and the narration, that game is not that great.

This game has even better combat, to me at least, and better skills to mess with rather than just that 2 favourite machete + shotgun.

The length was alright. And recursion is useful if you missed something during first play through. Like I said in previous post.

That's pretty much the same time I spent to complete the first playthrough for Bastion. However, unlike Bastion, Recursion is almost a must in Transistor due to the cryptic way the plot is revealed. Bastion was pretty much straight-forward with NG+ a lesson for you that history will not change if you opted to restore the world during the end of your first playthrough.

Yeah but you get the idea, 2 favourite weapons, you'll only upgrade them then start wrecking shit.

Transistor however, has only 1 weapon but thousands of possibilities of skill combination. Like gems in Path of Exile.

The only thing I don't see Transistor will ever be better than bastion is perhaps the soundtrack.

I think that's pretty subjective. While I'm in favour of Bastion's songs (only 3 pieces of them anyway), I can see why others sang praises on Transistor's songs.

All in all, they're both good with my preference lies with Bastion's.

Looping in Cheesenium since IINM, he prefers Transistor's. smile.gif

True, preferences. And Transistor is by no means a successor. Bastion was the first indie game that made me realize Indie game are some-- often times better. It was then published by WB games but this time they did it on their own.

I felt like this game did not receive enough spotlight. Just like Bastion didn't at first. And I hope that changes. The hype of them creating a next game was all long ago, but I didn't know it is released should it not have gone on sale this Summer Sale.

Yea, most of the gamers out there prefers AAA-games instead with millions / billions fund to begin with. Indie game developers have more freedom on how their games turn out which is a plus point to me.

So... wanna share what you make of Transistor's plot? I tried tweeting Kasavin to get some insights but he's not divulging any. sweat.gif

Since we're talking about weapon diversity.

Transistor gives you a ton of options, and I experimented around to unlock all the stories and background info and such, but when it came down to wrecking enemies, you really didn't have that many choices imo. I killed all the humanoids with the same combo: void, void, backstab crash, backstab cull.

Sure, you could use other skills, but no combo is nearly as strong as the above. Especially cull. That skill is much stronger than anything else to me.

Loved the game tho, don't get me wrong.

Haven't finish Recursion. Didn't really finish reading all profiles either. Story's pretty straight forward. Where there are only 2 person which is really "bad guy". Others in the Camerata isn't really bad but has a different vision/mission. But they lost control of the process and only Transistor can control them.

Cull is too damn strong especially when u have time to plan every move. 200% upgraded Unmask + backstab basically one shot stuff.

I like bounce and sometimes slot in charm, and while cull is strong, it'll be the first to break if ur hp goes 0.

I think the plot is not as straight forward as we think it is.

For a start, is Cloudbank a game? A virtual machine? A physical PC?

By the Country, is it the real world where people go to when they decided to quit the game / Cloudbank?

What is the Spine of the World? Initially I took it as the hard disk spindle which could cause some damage whenever it hits the disc surface but the fact that it's categorized as a process speaks otherwise. And what's the point of its appearance in the game? It caused the Transistor to lag / perform badly & we're being made to kill its heart but what's the point in the whole plot?

The Camerata was a bunch of guys that tried to improve things but shit happens when a person who's not well-versed with how the Transistor (Grant) used it the wrong way. That's the start of the whole Process going amok. So yeah, it's another version of tragic heroes / heroine trying to save the world but ended up destroying everything instead.

Compared to other sci-fi games / stories, I'm very intrigued with how they paint (not literally) Cloudbank. It's a place where things change all the time, to the point that nothing changes.

Almost remind me of the Second Life game.

The reason WB published Bastion is because of an idiotic clause on 360 where you need to have a publisher either Microsoft Games Studio or external publisher before you can publish it. If you do not have a publisher, you can't publish the game on 360 where it was the indie heaven back then.

WB didn't fund the game, they literally sit there collecting money from sales across all platforms. Bastion was self funded with over a million USD for 7 employees.

Thankfully, it is no longer true now as the last thing I want to see is games like Project CARS or Elite 4 tied to a publisher that sit there collect money.

I think Transistor no longer warrants any spoiler tag since it's been out for some time now. That's just me though so if anyone complains, I can always retag them if required.

Anyway, a few facts that I think I can share with you:

1. The Camerata is not the government. Cloudbank was administered by a group of Administrators so if we're looking for a similarity to a government, I think it should be the Administrators instead. Grant was 1 of the longest serving Administrators & the one that founded the group Camerata.

2. The Camerata is of the opinion that democracy (majority wins via voting) brings Cloudbank nowhere since the decision was made out of whims. That's why they decided to collect the Trace of a few remarkable & influential individuals who has done something big that stands out from the rest to represent the mass instead.

3. Sybil is a socialite, not a singer. She was evidently in love with Red & intentionally put her name into the list even though it was never intended. I'm not sure if she intended to have Breach() killed in the process or Red was all the while her only target but shit happened in which the Transistor left Grant's hand & the Camerata lost the ownership, & subsequently the Process.

When you encounter Sybil, her dialogues implied heavy infatuations with Red. She even created a Sandbox room with a record player playing Red's songs.

So yeah, she's most probably a bi or les. No big deal since Grant & Asher were heavily implied as gay partners. smile.gif

4. After absorbing Royce's trace, Red has the power to return Cloudbank to its glory days but not the inhabitants. Again, we're not sure if they simply log out (if the assumption that it's a game holds true) or they're dead / gone to the Country. We don't even know if the Country refers to another universe like Cloudbank or anything.

5. Last but not least, we don't have a real answer if the Transistor is something that Royce created or he simply found it, just like how he found out the Process.

YEESHHH... now you feel the agony that has been biting & munching in my mind!

Nahh... there are still soooo many questions that were left unanswered.

Back in my mind, I'm still of the opinion that the Spine of the World is there for a reason though it still eludes me.

And oh, in case you start Recursion, the very first line is uttered by Royce, not Breach(). Why is that so? Discuss.

The same thing happened in Bastion too but that's to be expected since the first playthrough was meant to end with the Kid attempting to change history by restoring the world, only to have the Calamity repeats itself all over again. The NG+ should end with you choosing to move on with the few survivors that you encountered along the way.

But what's Recursion all about in Transistor? Are we to believe that there's another Cloudbank in the Transistor? A VM within a VM? Inception?

Nah, not at all. Since it's recursion. I just need to find more bits, and enjoy harder gameplay.

No worries on that but the problem with the picture you had posted is, The first few and the last few letter of the picture will be cropped off.

I had that issue with my Steam thread as the thumbnails has to be almost exactly square.

Play the game first. It's a lot better if you hear the OST for the first time during the intended scenes/areas. Too bad I can't turn back time cry.gif

Edit: I heard it's like 6-8 hours of gameplay but you can replay it with more of the limiters activated to make it harder smile.gif I'm only like 2 hours in (gameplay-wise) so far because I have a really short attention span.

Equally good, if not better.
