Everyone screw up their early character in PoE.
So don't worry too much about it, as the learning curve of this game is pretty high, and you also need some luck with loots.
Basically which class you pick will depends on what skill builds you want to play.
But that doesn't mean a Marauder can't become a spell caster, it just not that optimized compared to example witch.
But since you're new, you're very likely don't know what skill to play just yet;
that's why keep trying out new skill gems as you go until you find one that's fun to play constantly.After you get to Act6, a NPC will be available that sells all the skill gems, except a few.
Before reaching there, you still have limited selection of skill gems from accessory vendors from each act, which availability depending on your class and quest unlock.
If a skill looks boring or slow by default, don't write it off just yet. "Support Gem" is where things really get serious, changing how the skill behave.
But in general, we want to clear (kill) as fast as possible.
Even a single target skill, can be augmented with support gem to become AoE or hit multiple targets.
Simple logic, the faster you kill, the more loot you have, the faster you level.
But don't neglect your defense & elemental resistance still... for starter it's recommend to play as "life" build.
If you came across some life passive nodes, grab them.
General item stats (mods) you looking for, life, multiple resistance, damage depending on your skill build - spell, elemental, physical, melee, etc.
In general we have these gem setups:
- main offensive skill links, usually fast clearing area damage
- secondary offensive skill links, for single target, in case main skill is weak for single target
- movement skill links, movement skills is important both for combat and traversing map
- defensive skill links, which include curses, aura, "cast when...." (usually use Cast when Damage Taken trigger gem which you get access end of Act 3)
- golem companion, if have free slots
Note that,
words in PoE means VERY specific things.

Elemental and spell are two different things. Spell affect magic skill gem that tagged spell. Elemental affect anything elements - fire, ice, lightning.
Elemental Damage with Attack is different things. This affect skills that tagged as attack, so it don't works for spell.
Elemental Damage with Weapon is another thing. It affect the elemental dps on your weapon only.
Physical Damage and Melee/Weapon Physical Damage are two different things, because some spells casts physical damage...
More Damage and Increase Damage are different thing... More is better than increase. How can I explain this hmm... This is hard stuff.
In general, if you unsure how things matched together, especially what support gems actually supports, despite the description - check their tags.

On the topic of passive tree. You gain some reset point by doing the story quests, probably around 15-ish in total.
Beyond that, you need to start using Orb of Regret to gain additional reset points.
If you check the accessory merchant NPC, you should notice there are ways to exchange orbs (currencies) for other orbs.
For example 2 Scouring Orb -> 1 Regret Orb.
If you find a skill that feels fun to play, check out PoE forum class section for some guides.Might want to stick to guides that don't use stupidly exotic stuff.
In a big picture,
- north is spell, curse, minion, energy shield...
- east is crit, chaos, evasion, bow, one hand...
- south is two hand, shield, melee...
- west is life, armor, melee...
- every class starts at specific position on the passive tree. Scion at the middle.

Quick run down to how item stats (mods) works.
- magic (blue) item can have max 2 mods
- there are single mods that actually appear as two-lines, called hybrid
- rare (yellow) item can have max 6 mods, however, corruption can alter this rule
- in those 6 mods, 3 are suffix, 3 are prefix.
Detailed listing here.- mods are randomly crafted with various orbs, which is always gambling
- specific mods can also be crafted with
Forsaken Master's crafting tool
- corrupted item is made with Vaal Orb, corrupted item cannot be further crafted, except changing socket colors.
//---
Also, use a loot filter. Can be configured under option > UI > scroll to bottom
Think of it as a CSS Style Sheet if you knew programming stuff; it styles the loot names, showing, hiding, changing color, apply sound effect on drop...
While there are plenty of publicly shared loot filter out there, I still thinks this is something personal.
After you get some understanding of the game, you might be able to make your own loot filter to suit your liking with a tool called
Filtration.

Of course there's also player trading.
I give you a quick run down of how player trading works.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
Buying:
1, search for item on
trading sites2, click the [whisper] button, a message will be copied
3, back to game, just ctrl+v paste the message
4, you got invited to a party
5, click his portrait, go to his hideout
6, click his portrait, select trade, or accept trade pop-out if the seller requested already
7, hover on the items in the trade window before the [confirm] button can be clicked
Selling:
method A: post on PoE trade subforum
method B: use a cash shop premium inventory, set it to [public] mode. Preferred method.
PoE is completely free, but having a few extra stash tabs really helps with the amount of loots we got...
For specific purpose stash tab, I feel that the only one needed is Currency Stash Tab, the rest are pretty much optional & don't feel as important.
Common trading currency from lowest to highest.
Alteration Orb > Jeweler Orb > Fusing Orb > Alchemy Orb > Chaos Orb > Exalted Orb
//---
If anything else important I want to say...
- vendor (sell to NPC) RGB linked sockets for 1 Chromatic Orb
- levelling up refresh NPC merchant stock, go check for RGB links and 6 sockets
- vendor 6 sockets get 7 jeweler orb, you'll start to see this around act 3+, low level item have limited socket amount
- when fighting rare & unique monster, it's a good idea to what mods they have (written under their health bar), dangerous thing includes corrupted blood (bleeding), reflect, volatile blood
- have a flask that remove "bleeding", the degen will kill you very quickly. Visual cue : flying blood orb around your character
- Reduce Mana Reserve by 2% doesn't mean 25% -> 23%. It means 25/100x(100-2)=24.5 rounded up still 25...
- shoe/boots without movement speed is generally useless.
- vendor boot + quicksilver flask + Augment Orb = +5% movement speed. Eg: vendor a 10% boot gets 15%.
- press "x" to switch to secondary weapon sets, you can use these to level up additional gems. They get exp even not as active weapon.
- vendor item with combined 40 quality yield an orb to enhance quality, eg:
Flask with combined quality 40% = 1 Glassblower Bauble. Gem 40% combined = 1 Gemcutter Prism.
Don't bother do this for armor and weapon, really.
//---
The current league is Abyss, definitely recommend to play there.
A "league" is a 3 months long... "activity", with specific game-play mechanism.
Usually when a league ends there will be a short break before the next league.
League characters and items will move to "Standard" once ended.
