first guitar? my 2 cents:
ELECTRIC absolute budget: <1k Craftsmen - good QC but often not traditional specs/wood Samick - good overall, designs a matter of taste SX - QC is not as good, can be superb after setup medium budget 1k-2k Squier - safe choice, good designs and playability, lots of choice Ibanez - like above, designs matter of taste LTD - a bit overpriced here but overall good quality Epiphone - overpriced imo used MIJ - probably the best deal in this range if the condition is still ok |

My advise for absolute beginner:
1. BUDGET - Never buy a cheap shxt guitar, your progression and passion will be affected badly (some ppl thinks that when you are not playing then you not losing much $$ 2. BRAND - Always save up and buy a branded guitar (lower end series) because it hold its value better. Squier or MIM Fender is a good beginner choice for bluesy. Epiphone is more thicker sound and slightly pricey but you can find some good used around RM1k++ 3. THE LOOKS - Buy the guitar which looks a killer/cool/awesome/beautiful/lovely/gorgeous to you. Whenever you looking at it and your hand will goes itchy and wants to pick it up |

After selling guitars for pretty darn long ...i've learned a few things .
Here's my RM0.02 Your first guitar , should be a guitar that you like . Something that inspires you , something that looks like what your idol play , or something that you think is damn cool . The whole point of the first guitar , is to make sure you don't leave the guitar a side and collect dust . What you want is - this guitar pushes you to move on and continue the learning journey no matter how hard and how tough it gets. That is why it is important to buy something that you really really really like ... When you are gonna purchase your second guitar , then value for money , tone , specs , setup , brand , resale value etc etc factor kicks in . Agreed on your points. Brought my student that day to get his first guitar and after trying out many guitars, I advised him to go with the Yamaha 310 as well. Affordable, nice and wholesome sound and on top of that, the people in Yamaha set it up really nice with superb action and neck feel.

@+3kk!
Hey, I am new to guitar, but not music. I play piano and orchestra percussion (auxiliary, timpani, mallet etc.) I know most time signature, articulation, dynamics and chord (min, aug, maj, sus). I know here and there when practicing with some guitarist ( e.g. how to tune guitar with chord). Is Yamaha F310 a good start for me? Edit : I can read treble, tenor and bass clef but not guitar tab. Is Yamaha F310 a good start for me? i recommend yamaha cause its a safe bet, however if you have musical experience i think you would understand what kinda tone you are looking for. this might prove complicating as the f310 is only 1 kind of guitar in a sea of various body shapes and sizes. there are some quite good china/korea OEM brands running around that can challenge them, ie: cort or farida (personally my fav but can be quite unpredictable) hence to pick out the right one from a sea of wrong ones can be quite daunting. if you want to find out some better opinions and try out yourself, i suggest you visit TGS Cheras as they can be quite helpful to beginners and last time allow you to test guitars side by side to feel what you prefer. that being said, its also dependent on what you use the guitar for, im mainly an electric player hence the c310 (the classical version of the f310) suits me perfectly as im not too bothered about how the tone or projection sounds like. so a second hand yamaha suits me well (i think i bought for hundred over bucks only) |

QUOTE(navilink @ Jun 26 2013, 10:48 PM) isn't classical = acoustic? they are both technically acoustics, but in acoustics there are many kinds there's classical which is smaller, shorter scale length and use nylon strings (they also tend to have wider necks).also looking around for budget guitar.. priority is easy on the fingers.. then theres the standard acoustrics that we all know about, in that you have the different body size for different applications. generally in the lower end budget range i dont think this is common, they have only 1 or 2 sizes only. easy on the fingers is classical, but they are meant for single note playing and less so for strumming. you CAN strum on them yes, but they dont offer the bright sparkle that acoustics are known for and also with the wide necks you might need to learn the classical posistion. there are pro's and con's to both |

Hey guys,
I've been playing acoustic guitar for about a year. Now I'm planning to jump into electric guitar field. Can you suggest me what guitar and amp combo should I get? My budget is bellow RM1000, but maybe can increase a lil bit. I want to play something like Muse, Green Day, Sum 41, Arctic Monkeys, MCR kind of stuff. Not really into shredding so Ibanez might not be suitable I think. I researched a bit that Squier and Cort guitar might be good for beginner. And for the amp, Roland Micro Cube is fantastic. I'm planning to get Squier Affinity Strat or Maybe even Squier Standard Strat. Still, wanna hear you guy's opinion and suggestion. Thanks in the advance. |
