QUOTE(mydragoon @ Feb 27 2013, 11:13 AM)
my advise to ppl is...

processor and ram will always improve and increase. there will come a time when people no longer look at these hardware specs but look at the overall experience.

so, as long as you can do what you want with the present models (and think you can continue to do so for the next 2 years), that is good enough.

in my case... Note 2 is just about right. i wanna be able to watch fullHD movie (only coz i'm lazy to look and store multiple copies of the same movie). note 2 and s3 can do that.

but i like big screen.

and ya... luckily... Samsung still have expansion slow and removable battery. i still quite traditional and would like them.

so, having said all the above... sometimes... even older models are good enough. and what more, older models will be more affordable once the new model is announced/ launched.

Note 2 FTW. Anyway, we are still limited by 32 bit ARM in all its flavors (Tegra4, S800/600/4,A15whatnot), so it's only a matter of evolution until we get ARM64. But then ARM has stated that ARM64 will run ARM32 seamlessly, so, in the end, the vast majority of users won't even notice or bother. It's the same like the PC/notebook market.

QUOTE(HeartRoxas @ Feb 27 2013, 11:30 AM)
Exactly my problem tongue.gif but XpZ bested Bfly in every aspect imo.
I was never a fan of Samsung. Well, never a fan of any brand really. But Samsung's decision to remain removable batt and microSD slots shows that they still care for tech enthusiasts that once rely on them so heavily for rooting, creating gold card, flashing ROM, etc. When HTC opted for non removable batt the first time (HTC One Series) I literally raged and did not calm down for more than half a day. Lol.

Back on topic though, RAM is so slow it is negligible. Processor however, are changing non stop. Note 2 is ALWAYS a choice for me. I love that beast. Sadly if I have the money for it now, I would've opted to wait for S4 or just buy HTC One when it comes. If I ever felt like I need a large screen and a stylus, I will not look further and could care less about 1080p or processors then. That's my problem, hard to decide. tongue.gif

Which is why I'm looking forward to S4 being my stop, my cure, my long awaited gadget.
*
Wait for Note 3. Even better whistling.gif see reply to mydragoon above as well. For me, among all the brands, only Samsung gives me what I want in a device to date. Competition is good and hopefully Samsung maintains its tradition of cardslot and removable battery. Contrast Xperia Z to Galaxy Xcover 2. Both dust and water resistant, but Xcover has a REMOVABLE battery.

QUOTE(waveweaver @ Feb 28 2013, 11:03 AM)
Not defensive. The way you post was sort of like you dont know that Samsung use plastic. And even suprise when you find it out.

Yes..Samsung use light..thin..bendable plastic on nearly all its phones especially on backcover. Reason..easy to open it when you need to take out the removable battery.
If the backcover crack or accidently break..it wont cost you a bomb to buy one and change it.
*
Ya bro, even ALL the mid and low tier Nokias (before Lumia) were all plastic and nobody complained. Personally, I think aluminium gets stains easily, and if you drop it you get dents that you can't fix.

Um, even the Lumia 920 ....
Designed to wow
Show off with vibrant colours, a one-piece polycarbonate body, and ceramic zirconium camera detailing and side keys.

Anyone fancy a stainless steel Vertu?

In USA they patriotic, dont want to see Korea made chip, let them use back Qualcomm so they will not boycott it.

Wonder how much Ram it gets 4GB?
*
All 32bit ARM chips have a max limit of 4Gb for addressable RAM. It's a technical limitation of 32 bits. At best you will get 3Gb in the next version of A15 next year, unless A53/A57 is released which is 64bit. Then you can have up to 128Tb smile.gif and carry a 3kg battery pack for your phone laugh.gif

But previous leak showed the device to be quite thick. The design is not ugly but looks dated. How come it looks like S3? Aiyoyo Samsung!

Slim device means small battery and then you start complaining abt battery life. Give me another 2mm with a large battery anyday.

This obsession with design is very superficial imho.

The correct word fails me. Perhaps PeeEl can provide the correct word defining shallowness. tongue.gif

I bet the majority of us would opt for a device which is aesthetically-pleasing. This doesn't make us shallow. Just a preference. Welcome to the real world.
*
Agreed. Justseen too many posts saying "same ugly design same ugly plastic etc." and the use of the word "hate" a little too much. Nothing intrinsically bad about the s3/note/note2 design.

More activity around the device-du-jour

http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/13/4102174/...detailed-images

The article itself is uninteresting. Please read the comments. As of right now, there are 558 comments. Many of them are fairly long writeups, and a provide a good indication of what people are thinking about Samsung's actions.

Some comments:
Oh and why does it matter what the phone looks like when almost everyone puts a case on them! Honestly! Such a materialistic world.

There is no difference in the quality of plastic Samsung uses and the Nokia/HTC ones. You just think they’re more premium just because you think the design is better. Flexible does not mean cheap.

Samsung has learned a lesson, and it’s to continue what they have been doing as it is clearly paying off. The HTC One might look great, but the SGSIV is going to outsell it 10:1 because people will recognise it when they see one.

All these years you hear Android fans mocking Apple’s designs and saying no innovation as they feel it hasn’t changed (which is completely wrong, but I won’t go there). Now Samsung does it and the phone looks exactly the same the only difference is Apple can actually make hardware and Samsung clearly can’t. Plastic (or Polycarbonate which is just a prettier word than plastic) is not innovation. Neither is simply making the display larger because you can’t fit the components in the size of the current phone.

So now using aluminum or glass is innovation? Gee, I didn’t know people only cared about which beer container material (plastic, aluminum, or glass) was used to determine innovativeness. FYI, Apple made their display bigger and the phone itself taller with the iPhone 5. Hypocrisy right there.

Aluminum doesn’t make the phone inherently better. Harder to make != innovation. I could invent a less efficient heat engine and that would not be innovation.
Uh… the design did change. Different shape, home button, camera, sides, size, thickness, etc. Plastic is not a poor material. There’s nothing to say it’s better or worse overall than glass or aluminum.
I didn’t say that the S4 was an innovative revolution and neither did I consider the iPhone 5 the pinnacle of innovation.
Only according to Apple’s press releases does 1080p not matter. Basically every review site on the planet has praised 1080p as better than the usual 300 ppi displays.

Just look around at the numerous comments, even the Samsung fans able to admit that the design has remained largely the same – the defence being that they like it.

=======
None of the comments are mine. I just posted them or excerpts from them for your reading pleasure. Please don't complain TL:DR

I have been eyeing the XZ when it was announced. But after being enlightened from that thread here, it does not look too appetizing (since we have been talking about food). The S4 does seem to have an edge, so, yeah, let's keep certain parts of our anatomy crossed that is doesn't disappoint.
*
And I'd (and a host of others) be using that to extrapolate what goodness might come our way for the Note 3. I hope it is savory.

Though the Note2 at this point is un-paralleled (strictly my opinion), I still feel the size is a teeny bit big (again, my personal view). That's why I am looking at a 5" phone to emigrate to.

Note 3 do interest me more especially with the reported larger display of 5.9 inch !!!

Both esteemed uncles notworthy.gif

Yes the Note 2 is unparalleled at this point, and even in the near term perhaps, since if you read the thread, we're all almost bored to tears since there's nothing bad to discuss laugh.gif It's like just your BAU support with no new incidents.

We're now basically nitpicking about battery life.

Until 4.2.x comes along..... icon_rolleyes.gif

IMHO, after taking 5.3", 5.5", anything smaller just won't cut it anymore for me. Something smaller than 7" and pocketable will be perfect for me.

QUOTE(MPIK @ Mar 14 2013, 10:36 PM)
Too bad note 2 uses 720p display. Otherwise it would be great.
*
QUOTE(giovanni @ Mar 14 2013, 10:49 PM)
TBH, at 720p the screen is already very pleasing and razor sharp to naked eyes. Of course 1080p will be even better which will be seen in its next iteration.
*
If you see most of the review about displays, they are all using a MICROSCOPE to show you the pixel or subpixel arrangement. So 720p is already good enough for a lot of use cases, but of course we are all greedy for 1080p, and more as it comes along.

As it is, I don't think it is a proper comparison in watching video, whether 720p or 1080p, on a 7" or smaller device, against watching it on a 32" or larger TV meant for that sort of thing.

I mean if Butterfly as a 2012 phone can have 1080p, by right Note 2 should also have a 1080p screen.
Not sure why Samsung opt for a 720p screen only instead on such a large screen.

Both Butterfly and Note 2 released just close to each other.
*
QUOTE(soulseeker6187 @ Mar 14 2013, 11:33 PM)
its the AMOLED screen production of the 1080p got yield problem during the earlier batch. thats why they stick to 720p.

AMOLED is much more complicated than LCD.
*
Butterfly was the 1st 1080p screen device IINM, so that was their selling point. Note 2, it is possible on the one hand Samsung wanted to milk 720p for all it was worth, and just upgrade the CPU and RAM (which IMHO was already worthwhile), or they actually had problems with 1080p on AMOLED, OR Wacom coulnd't provide a 1080p digitizer as yet.

Anyway, since this is the S4 discussion, it will be interesting to see what is forthcoming for the next Note smile.gif

Since human can detect up to 330ppi, it is only logical if note 2 is fit with a 1080p display.

Ya, some people cannot differentiate.

I nearly vomit blood last time when showing my colleagues different between Blu-ray vs DVD, and I notice normally women can't differentiate most on such, for them it was the same until I need screenshot and circle part by part ask them see got different or not.
*
Perhaps your subject matter is not interesting enough to women leh tongue.gif If you were showing off nice cars or macho films I guess they didn't give a damn....maybe some chick flick or flowers or whatever they like would have caused them to notice it immediately.

Women can remember what pattern of stripe is on other women's dresses and how many buttons on the design of shoes, to which (most) men are completely blind.
