HI, im a new owner of Elantra 1.8, this my experience on FC,

mine is 48L full tank
Full tank will cost Rm 90, mostly poured for RM85
1st Full tank used Shell 95, 75% like city drive even thou i use federal highway it still will be like city, i think u guyz out there know why, 20% highway, managed to clock 440KM an refiled for RM 85, still left about 3 lit of petrol

2nd full tank, Caltex 95, immediate difference on pickup and power as i already imagined, 70% city 30% highway with full load on passenger and booth, manged to clock 485KM, seems like turning off VSM helps on city pickups to reduce FC maybe im wrong, filled up full tank again RM 86.57, left about 2 Lit petrol balance

3Rd on Petron 95 still testing, currently trip meter showing 145KM, 3 bars are down,

Thing to note, don't trust ODO that shows KM to next refill, its totally misleading, but it is normal because it will change according to ur driving style,

i'm not heavy footer thou light, it is like moderate, my highest speed clocked so far in highway, 140Kph, mostly average 110 - 120Kph on highway,

next 1000 service wanna buy Mobil 1 fully synthetic (5w -50) and use, i have it used on my previous Vios, the Engine Noise reduced greatly and power is more better, results in more better FC, wanna check how it does for My new Elantra....

welcome new owner rclxms.gif ...its worth it. erm one thing concerns me ur next engine oil change...why 5w50? fully synthetic ok but 5 ok 50???? to my knowledge 50 is usually for racing right???? and if you look in the manual it recommends 5w30. 50 won't harm to the engine since ur 1.8. but its a waste since ur car is new why not get 30 or 40?50 weight is heavier than 30 right.correct me if i'm wrong here guys...
*
Hi there, thanks, by what i know is 5W 40 should be lighter but in my experiance, 5w 50 seems to be more better, let me share my Vios experiance, after 5K service, toyota SC started to use Toyota 5W 40 fully synthetic OIL, after warranty expired for the car, i change to 5w 50 which is a mobil 1, tell u i feel the car more lighter and more powerful yet more smooth and less engine noise, ideally u wont hear any engine noise when u waiting in traffic light, hehehe, thats why i think 5w 50 should be more powerfull and smoother than 5w 40, but i may be wrong here because Mobil 1 and toyota is diffrent brand, further to add, for my Elantra i'm not going to change it on my first service, planing to wait for the next 5000 service an hantam my Mobil 1 5w 50 on it, Hopefully the car wont fly icon_idea.gif hehe, just kidding...

really sorry bro to make u rclxub.gif ....u see currently i'm using 5w30 petro canada semi. HE recommend us 10w40 helix h7. good engine oil...its general to say new cars use 5w30 engine oil. 2nd hand car 5 years above 10w40 engine oil. more than 10 years better get new car!!!!! u see i once tried 5w50 for my old car honda civic ek. usually pour in 10w40. but since oil always getting less...shop recommends 5w50. oil is thick so will never go away. but drawback is it makes my car feel heavy after drive first time..so i let the oil blend in for 5 days. but still, feel the same heavy...so i decided to change back to 10w40. instantly the car feels lighter is before.so its clearly the oil makes my car feels heavy...other thing can make the car feel heavy is over fill engine oil. the next morning i check the dipstick and its true the engine was overfill alot..so next day ask them to take out the oil. after that car feels as normal...this my experience so u could ask others opinion before make any decision...
*
Thanks allot for the info bro, that's rite bro, Engine Oil makes allot different, u check back my edited reply, hehe, i missed out something earlier, i does see the point u are trying emphasize after i looked the website for 2nd time, see how lah bro, i will go check out the Mobil 1 5w 30 Oil for my 5K service, sure expensive, because last time my 5w 50 cost me RM185 - 195 depends on the shop, between my fren he is good in this type of car things and very informative guy, he told me, no mater its semi or fully the shell helix is still heavy compare to other brand, so myself am not fan of shell either, now a bit afraid of that engine oil that hyundai using,

my recommendation for petrol try use caltex ron 95, if you are using shell, u will find the car more powerful and will move much more easier compare to shell petrol, check out and see

since shell introduce ron95, i stop using shell until today. i use only petron or BHpetrol. caltex have less station...my wifes car previously use petronas...now use petron. can feel the pickup...shell & petronas are adik beradik one...
*
ya bro, it's true, both are sharing oils, shell maybe ok for lower cc car, because last time i use shell allot for vios because it results in higher mileage, but still the power is normal only, but i still prefer caltex because of it's power, for Elantra 1.8, i feel like shell is very much under powering the car, u see my first post, shell gave me only 440KM, it started to light up the oil light when it reach 412KM, caltex results in 440Km before it has the oil light comes up and i further up to 485Km before i refill using petron, petron seems to be good also, the power is good, hoping it will reveal more better mileage... smile.gif

Hi all,

5w30 vs 10w40

what is the definition of the 1st 2 digits? and also the definition of the last 2 digits? viscosity and??? rclxub.gif
*
Hi hks, I'm not very good in this, but from my understanding the first digit define the type I guess, 10 is for semi syntethic and 5 is for fully synthetic, in general fully synthetic is much lighter than semi synthetic, about the 2nd digit, it defines how lighter the oil is, the lower the digit the more lighter it is, for example 5w 30 is more lighter than 5w 40, this applies for semi synthetic also, please check this with local mechanics, I might be totally wrong on the first digit explanation, hi guys plz correct me if I'm wrong, thxx... smile.gif

The two numbers on that you are referring is actually referring to the viscosity of the fuel oil.
Since there is two numbers it's considered multi-grade with the first two digit 5W (W) stand for Winter.
In other word, the viscosity of the fuel oil during winter or cold start.

In reality there is no Full Sync or Semi Sync.
There is only Sync or Non Sync (Mineral Base).
But local manufacturer had classified them as semi-sync so that they can profit from it.

Hope this helps  smile.gif

yup. ok. feel lighter. but not that much because after a while u forget but it. with helix i've use once(1000km only) so not sure whether PC there is a fuel savings. rm70 can go 450km(petron) but what i'm concern is the protection. every morning start there is tet tet tet sound. but its normal in the morning(24 Celsius temp) after warm up sound goes away...

just that i avoid common brands like shell, petronas, mobil coz of recycle oil. petro canada in malaysia only 1 distributor. so originality is gerenti..

Hi! zyrl, In summary, the Hyundai Elantra MD 1.6 High Spec's a GREAT BUY.  The VSM and ESC is VERY IMPORTANT Safety features called Vehicle Stability Management and Electric Stability Control.  It's a version of Advanced Traction Control (called VSM in Honda, E-TCS in Ford, VSC in Toyota and Daihatsu, and lastly Simply TCS (Traction Control System) for ALL OTHER CAR MAKERS!).  This prevents your car from losing control and skidding.  Ie. you can drive and corners as fast as you can when raining CONFIDENTLY and WORRY FREE!  Hope you get my explaination.

Why Elantra MD 1.6 High Spec OVER 1.8 Premium?  Read on:

1) Latest 1.6 DOHC DUAL-CVVT Engine producing 130ps@6300rpm and 157Nm@4600rpm which is More than adequate for a Non-Turbo 1.6L 11xxKG C-segment car.
2) Just right / Balanced between performance and Fuel Economy.  In fact, the 1.6 Elantra's 15-20% more economical than 1.8 in City driving.  But is reversed at Highway OR High speed cruising where the Extra 20ps horsepower and 21Nm torque prevails!
3) Better Sound System as it's FACTORY FITTED from KOREA unlike the 1.8's LOCALLY Sourced CHINA MADE (either Flyaudio OR Hanns) with SUCKY Screen (useless at Bright Sunlight), Crappy speakers (need to adjust to 30(!) to hear the music whereas the 1.6 adjust to 11-13 will do!
4) Un-necessary items found in 1.8 like Nappa Leather, Electric Glass Sunroof, 17" Rims and 215/45R17 (more $$$ when changing tyres, Auto-cruise, Electrical Adjustable Driver seat only and LASTLY Dual-zone Climate Control Air-cond.  Ask yourself, is it WORTH the RM16,000 Extra.
6) Priced below RM100,000 at RM98,888 with RM1500 discount from ME with free 4 items! (I am Hyundai Salesman from Advant Speed Motor)!
This is RM16,000 Cheaper than 1.8 which is A LOT OF MONEY which can be used to upgrade the following to make it IDEAL Elantra 1.6 High Spec:

a) Potent Booster (750), b) Quality Bodykits set (RM1800 max), c) Stabilizer bar (180), d) Ultra Racing rear 16mm anti-roll Bars (340), e) BEST QUALITY 3M Crystalline 70 ALL ROUND 97% IRR Tinting with 2nd layer 4 mil clear tint on 4 doors - bumped up to 6 mil! (RM2300), f) Plug and Play UK-style Paddle shifter - RM750 (Speedo Auto used to sell, now no longer carry - dunno why?), Auto fold side mirrors (RM850), g) DRL Foglights (RM450) and DRL Headlights (BMW Style) RM850), h) Korean made DVD+GPS+Bluetooth+IPOD Connectivity 8 inch Touch Screen Player (1 inch larger than China made 1.8P) WITH BUILT-IN REVERSE CAMERA (RM3,000 got change)... (TOTAL SO FAR RM11270 only!) i) AND LOTS MORE!

GRAND TOTAL OTR Price after less 55% NCB and RM1500 cash rebate is RM96,269.75.  Add RM11,270 is ONLY RM107,539.75!  You still have MORE THAN RM5000 savings over 1.8 Premium after PERFECTING or ADDING VALUE to the 1.6 High Spec.. Do you get what I mean?

Other Forum members, please help me to POISON HIM!!!

since the demand is high i reveal my secret rm70 450km

before 1000km service i didn't look at all the FC because i feel the car like heavy.(because engine parts still new, net yet loose)so no use at looking FC. after 1000km, i change oil to Petrol Canada Supreme Synthetic 5w30 and i bought potent booster. i pour in petron ron95 rm70.(in car have 2 bars left) at night.

my journey to office every day is 90km. start morning(time 6.30) town cheras bt9(jam about 5 minits), then hway(clear)speed 120km, end in shah alam(clear).  journey back start town shah alam(jam 5 minits) then hway(jam 30 minits) end town cheras batu 9 (jam 5 minits). saturday and sunday town strolling for 10kms. total rm450km.(left 2 bars at dash)remaining 113km.

i also use potent booster to help me to lower my FC. Use Mode EC level 3. never use HA or FA.

just finish my test for BHpetrol so rm70 i get 422km only. power feel slightly low if compare to petron. after this back to petron.

my conclusion potent booster, type of petrol, type of engine oil 5w30, pump gas in night time, journey in low temp(morning & evening),speed below 120kmh and lighter leg helped me get better mileage

thats my secret. FOC. my old 1.8 honda vtec rm70 can get 400km. many say its impossible to get that in B18c type r ron95 high cams...its the bond between man and machine they say. talk to ur car. it hears you...  shocking.gif

Yo Boss, thanks allot, really helpfull, i'm considering the Potent boost, waiting for the guy to reply me the price, thanks allot again man....

potent booster ur paying not just to boost your FC there 2 more modes to make ur car faster...really helpful if ur trying to get out from roundabout...the car jumps wow...really...sure can smoke other cars...i never try before coz sayang krete ma...but u can feel the car can go much faster than b4...
*
humm, speed is still not so much considered for me as i found the car now move much more faster, i serviced the car after 1000 Km, i wanted to use the Shell semi synt they use, but still no good feel about it, so i bought my own Mobil 1 10w 40 semi synt, guess what, they car more faster i mean, less throttle to shift between gears, the pickup was very good and smooth, seems like the FC as improved, now the car at 1 bar before half tank showing 200 Km, as what i know, it was 75% city drive and 25% highway, hopefully can mark a good consumption throughout full tank

My latest update on fc after first service, total km achived 450km still left about 3.5 lit of petrol in it,
114.4km highway / 335.6km city drive with once faced heavy jam for about 15 mins, so total can say 80%city 20% highway....

wah, y so good in FC one. I filled up my 1st tong, and currently only run for 290km and it left 2 bars to go............i took my car on last Sat and seems it not really good in FC

average speed 80 - 100 km/h
*
bro, make sure when u shift be gentle a bit on the paddle, watch the green eco light, make sure it is not turning off for long, try to make the eco light stays as much as u could, if u feel car is needing allot throthle to move, than something wrong, on your first service complaint to them, i did, even thou i got over 430++ average on that first mineral engine oil, i still complaint because what simedarby claim on their website is totally misleading, they stated combine fuel consumption of highway and city will result in 14.1km/lit, that not even come close to what we are experiencing on real life, so i made a complaint they said they can't do much and they reset my ECU and upgraded to new a 1, i still remember when i saw the computer box they use to connect to the car shows 4 new ECU, everything have the word IMPROVEMENT, but can't really see what was the improvement about, so the service person used the latest ECU it has, some-more i use Mobil 1 10w 40 Semi synthetic, not the shell helix 7 that they recommend, another thing to take note, for petrol don't use shell or petronas, i recommend u use caltex 95, use it to flush out the carbons in ur engine, caltex are good in cleaning ur engine, once u finished up with caltex, u can use petron, that should give good power and fuel almost on par with caltex, seriously say no for shell and petronas for this car, use caltex and see for ur self, u will notice immediate power difference on ur pickup(torque)....

Bro, mine 1.8 its 48L tank and will cost around RM85 for 44.74 Liters of petrol, easily can get over 420++ for it to light up the fuel light, once the fuel light is up, we can go further about 35++ km on city drive and u will left about 3.5liters of remaining petrol, as i see over here, 1.6 should be 42 liters full tank and should be able to easily reach 450KM ++, something is seriously wrong bro, get the service center to reset ur ECU, check ur spark plug and whatever that can cause high fuel....

true...got to test them all and then will know which is better...and another teori is that if combine between petrol brand also can give better mileage...for instance, i fill petron whereby in my tank still have petrol shell.(about 2 bars) and it give me 450km rm70 petron.

now in my tank all petron, fill petron another rm70, couldn't get 450km..driving condition is the same... means here that if want to do testing need to empty current fuel in tank untill fuel light come out then fill another brand of petrol. if not it will give inaccurate results in FC.

it happens to previous with my honda vtec type r engine...i get better mileage(power is retained) when i mix bhp and petronas... bhp mix with others don't work...

its  rclxub.gif. but its unpractical to mix fuel as u will waste fuel going to 2 stations...unless u mix petrols that is next to each other...but still its  rclxub.gif

but i've done it as its the only choice i have if not the honda will be underpowered and get worst FC. people say I have the best FC for my honda type r car. the secret was mix fuel...
*
Like this also can ha, hmm nice trick, let me give a try on my next fill up..., between, i feel the perf and fc consumption same when use shell and petronas, thats why i told to avoid both on my previous post....

I think it's somehow related to my short distance route mayb??.. daily 10km from home to work.. no traffic jam.. only 2 traffic with short stopage, 10 to 15 min reach office..if my wife drive to work (her work place is more than 20KM from home).. she tend to get better mileage ( ask her how much she say better but dunno the figure...duh doh.gif )...Also I'm a bit heavy foot..but previously I do try on to be gently on the pedal and always watch for the eco lite on.. does not help much.. only only~10km extra..mayb need light foot surgery  sweat.gif

Bro go to SC, make complaint, ask them to reflash the ECU with more recent 1, i did it, seems got different in FC, can't conform maybe because of my engine OIL, what engine Oil u using.. ?
