Ha.. they r doing fine?

How's yours? Still on mazuri's diet? I feed them mainly mazuri on order to save time nowadays..  tongue.gif

Mine is doing very well. He at my parents house currently till I back. I am surprise how tame tortoise can be. The little fella literally woke up and move toward my mom feet when he seeing/hearing my mom's voice.

I think I have to find a new pair for myself. Got a feeling that my mom want the tortoise permanently... sweat.gif

Haha, lucky you. My gf doesn't like them much, said they r dirty & smelly..  mad.gif

Btw, do u have any idea how heavy the female needs to be before they r ready to lay eggs?

My male is only abt 5 inches & 400g but i saw on many occasions that he keeps mounting on my biggest female (abt 8.5 inches)..  tongue.gif
*
Not sure, depending on species and their age of sexual maturity I guess.

I read somewhere that paring 2 male and one female for a bit of competition between the male may enhance the chance of fertilization laugh.gif

Any expert mind enlightening me, is it possible to house a leopard and indian star together? I have done research but the opinions seemed mixed....would appreciate if anyone can help, thanks! smile.gif
*
Hi,

Not an expert but just mere enthusiast here.

I personally might house those two together IF:
* Both are captive breed.
* Same size/age or almost the same.
* Housing is huge enough for them to have personal space.

The main issue here is that apart from territorial claims, susceptibility of one species to certain virus/fungi is differ from one to another but this issue is mainly faced by wildlife-captured rather than captive breed.

And also, what size should a tortoise be before I get them from a pet shop? (i.e. will too young hatchlings be too fragile to handle?)
*
Depend on species if you ask me. What species is on your mind?

Also I would like to stress, kindly do a through reading before execute with the purchase, particularly regarding their lifespan, growth rate and maximal adult size. Owning a tortoise is not a easy, short task. Its a form of dedication that need a proper planning and mutual understanding/passion with your life partner or family members smile.gif

Dear sifu sifu,

I have been looking around here for some time now, but I am wondering if I would like to start to care for 2 Star tortoise. What basic recommended stuff would you guys recommend (would like to have a beautiful tank like most of you have) *shy* and the estimated cost roughly around? Preferably portable so can carry them around to get some sun.
Firstly they will be in an air con environment most of the time, it is ok right as long as they have some heat from the light?  I have seen some of your tanks and I must say it's pretty amazing! Like the garden of Eden! And *amazed* so I do need some tip off on the basic stuff which I can do before and after getting them as I hope that they can live comfortably.

Thank you sifu *salute* ^^
*
Hey man,

Basic recommendation would be:
* Basic knowledge, acceptance and commitment toward your keen species.
* Enclosure : not necessarily a "garden" or tank. You can arrange dozen a bricks to make an enclosure. Personally I think this will be the best for ventilation as well as its economical. Flexible too with the size and shape of enclosure you want. Be sure to put several hiding place too, they usually love it!
* Substrate : you can easily find this on any reptile shop. I endorse to buy from shop instead of taking the soil/substrate from outdoor due to unknown pathological organism that may have on the soil. Especially to be exposed to baby tortoises.
* Lighting : if your enclosure is indoor, its good to have their own sunlight source for basking. You can buy the UV bulb from reptile shop as well. No need to get a large size, small one will do.
* Diet : Mazuri is a good start. I personally at least mixing their diet 50% with mazuri and another half with flower/greens. Research shown Mazuri along is sufficient for a normal growth of a tortoise, yet it based on the owner preferences to make the diet more variety.
* Supplement : Good if you provide them periodically. Vitamin D, calcium and other stuff. But usually the dosage and frequency is low for normally growing tortoise, so no need to get a large volume.
* Health : Do some research where is the nearest vet that you can refer to in case of emergency or anything related with tortoise health. Not all vet capable to treat tortoise.
* Permit : Be mind to renew every year(?). I am not sure about this one too well as I don't yet apply for mine lol.

Please correct/do add if I am missing anything.

More like an aquarium for a tortoise but not sure what is the term to use for a tortoise 'aquarium" tongue.gif
I have seen shops selling fish aquarium set .. and i want to know if there is tortoise aquarium set.
*
If you can afford an outside space, this is the best in my opinion;

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

For indoor, please don't use typical aquarium. Its too tall and it will create a poor ventilation. Plus the transparent glass might cause your tortoise to be restless by constant effort to try to get out from the glass - to explore the outside world.

Some exotic pet shop able to handle a custom request for tortoise cage. My suggestion is that you try to do some research yourself by simply Googling the "tortoise enclosure" etc and save several pictures on your phone or tablet and try discussing to your local carpenter if they can handle the custom request.

If the local carpenter able to handle your request, just make sure to remind them to cover the wood/playwood etc with a coating so it won't be moist and causing a fungi on the wood itself.

wow, nice outdoor enclosure!

when is the next season for sulcata babies?

isit better get baby or adult sulcata?
*
The enclosure is not mine, just taken from Internet for example.

Not sure when is the next season sweat.gif

It depend on your aim.

Baby : Start from basic, will be your lifelong companion, better bonding (I guess?).

Adult : Less hassle to take care, can rebreeding in much shorter period than baby.

can sulcata mix with elongated tortoise?
I found no info of that online sweat.gif

As long as both healthy it won't be too much problem.

Just make sure the size is comparable, afraid of bullying lol.

I am happy to hear others' opinion on this matter as well too.
