SYMBIAN OS seems like a stone age system which well-known by phone user, yet in this everybody iphone android era, i have decided to go against the current and join the symbian forces when the phone 1st introduced!

Before picking up the phone, i have go around and have a survey on the phone on forum, website. All the master sifu say this phone nice and IMBA, and therefore.. I choose you! wub.gif

Phone in hand, and what i need to do is equip my phone with apps in OVI store.

Angry bird? Oh yes! Fruit Ninja? OK checked! plant vs zombie... erhhh not bad! U gotta be shine in front my friends then! but in the end....

My class chick response: OH ya? Old time story for the games pal, u gotta catch up with that...

My gang of friend: Do you have XXX game? OOps sorry, ur sympian phone not compatible with that..

BTW luckily, the 41 Megapixel is not a just-so-oh-ya stuff. 41 Megapixel? U gotta be kidding for tat? (for that moment la) and here is the coming things come across my days..

1) When hanging out and yamchah with friends, no matter what, most of them will hold 1 phone and look down on it ( yeah yeah u r rite, the low head group (di tou zhu) But 1st time my phone has bring out, all my friends are impressed by its camera function and after that, is self taking photo session: head up, smile and ka cha! Oops sorry samsung and apple, 8 and 12 M are not impressed enough tongue.gif

2) Girls do you mind taking photo with me? Imagine if I asking with a digital camera, girl not so interested on it rite? (me not handsome somemore doh.gif ) Things come different with pureview 808! The powerful of 41M gives some confidence for me to go for the first touch... girl wanna give a try on that? brows.gif Bye bye, the old time downloading and storing hot chick photo old story~~

3) Oh ya, when we guys hanging out yamcah, all we talk is girl and money or fun things (yeah, talk cock) The phone juz impressed and they will: wow, not bad keep taking photo with chicks! I know is bad shakehead.gif juz let me immersed in this self shock feeling juz among the friends

4) When we study along, somehow, our friends or lecturer will further their study or career in other places. Group photo session normally will be held. Got one time my friend had 4get to bring his DSLR.. he juz feel like OMG, but luckily my phone has come out as super sub and completed the task well. Dude, problem?

5) When almost examination that period, even your best friend also will tell you go study (at the end, playing around together~) My notes and example sheet juz blank for whole year! And at that time, i will bring along my phone going around the genius to copy. Copy? KA-cha Ka-cha! My phone will done for me biggrin.gif

6) One thing need to mention, my group of friends practice ALUBA during birthday time. ALUBA? come on, we malaysian sure know 1. Who gonna take camera recorder around when this practices happen around? and this time my phone juz enough to do it ( small and easy to hide what) See ya the whole process in fb! and it definitely will be one of the fun and unforgettable 1 during teenage time rclxms.gif

Besides taking photo during outing and tour all that, pureview 808 indeed a multi-function phone and worth for it to buy. It bring more fun and ppl to my life, here share it with other phone users, cheers!

hey. I started using my 808 since September 2012 until now December 2014. 2 years and 3 months. Still love the ease of using symbian. But sadly no decent apps in symbian OS now (no proper facebook, LINE, and nice games). LOVE the camera so much. One of the reasons I am still using it is because of the camera! Using Redmi Note 4G as secondary phone for social apps and some games.

Planning to get a new phone in the new year, want a very powerful camera phone but don't want 1020 due still expensive now and slow speed of taking pictures. any suggestion? thanks.

Upgraded from pv808 to L1020 Few months ago. Some times I do miss this phone. Especially the battery life and the overall design of the phone. Wouldn't have sold it off to fund for my L1020 if I have the choice.

I like the design n spec of vivo xshot, but the price about 1600 seems like a little bit high for a chinese phone with not many stores here.

How about xperia z3 compact or lumia 930? I actually prefer a phone with screen not more than 5 inch.

Pureview 808 was indeed a legend, as a frantic nokia fans myself, I haven't even seen one out there! I myself as a collector which nowadays still collect old nokia phones for fun, shall be putting Pureview 808 as my next target.

Yeah I know the fun, ever since Nokia was dead, Iphone and Android swarming up the world, back at two to one years ago, I bought back Nokia N90, N93 and N93i, switching it for using alongside my smartphone, I got huge attention when I pulled these glamorous bulky clamshell phone out when picking up a call! XD

At that time, when I visited phone store, Some YOUNG dude from the stores are giving me huge reaction and all said almost the same thing: ''Walao, dude! this phone are freaking legend! How come you still using/owned one? can sell?''

Well of course my answer was no. lol

P.S the latest one I've collected was Nokia N95 8GB after Nokia 7373

I am still stuck with my 808. 4 more months will be 3 yrs anniversary. haha
swapped my secondary phone from redmi note to meizu m1 note for social apps. Tried to swap m1 note to be my primary phone but swapped back few days later. Couldn't let go 808 due to the image quality. But i think its time to search for a new phone with good camera with OIS. i want a really good camera cause i just love to take candid pictures of friends and family and don't really prefer to carry extra camera or dslr. I am ok with windows or android cause i think the social apps i am using often are available in both (i m not an apple fan so not including ios here. XP). I really love nokia!

suggestion:
Nokia Lumia 930, 830, vivo xshot, Mi Note?
or maybe wait for lumia 940, 840 but that will be Microsoft Lumia but not Nokia Lumia. T.T

Missed this phone. Had it 2 years ago. The camera performance was well ahead of its time. If you notice, the lense bokeh is very smooth and has some slight vignetting!

Some photos by nokia 808. Unable to upload here, so use a dropbox instead. Chance of defocus is quite high in 34mp mode, color is accurate, not sharp and quite a lot of noise.

When you uses full resolution either 34MP or 38MP, pixel binding a.k.a. super sampling (to reduce noise) is no longer at work. From your 808 photo, the photo tends to have slight red cast (which is normal for 808, by the way, Nokia was never good at white balance, i guess LOL) If you would like to have sharp image and less noise, use the default 5MP output, you can adjust the sharpness slider to suit your preferences at creative mode^^

Reason of less sharpness and more noise behind 34MP/38MP? we are looking a photo a size of a poster, try looking close to a printed poster, you will start seeing pixels.

Almost 3 years the 808 is with me, even now i have the Lumia 930, i still find 808's image quality is one of the best i seen in mobile phone biggrin.gif

Lastly, hope you enjoy your 808, is a rare gem now thumbup.gif

Sorry for late reply, for those updates (especially Maps) , you might need to get your OS to belle FP2 first, unfortunately I'm running on stock Belle FP2 and ain't a fan of custom roms.

Hopefully other sifu can help you in this matter icon_question.gif

even if u can dump in the original resolution file, the file size are too big for us to open while we are on mobile (not all of us are always on PC, or fast internet connection), it is best that you create a flickr account, not just u can retain original file (for those interested then they will click and see) but also different resolution size of the photo for easy sharing (best shared using 800 or 1024 in lowyat forum)

Are you using ur 808 as a primary phone? if not, better don't have high hopes on the 808's Nokia Map, although the map database has been updated this year (finally) but without monthly update basis, the road will no longer be accurate, if you are on android/IOS, HERE MAPS are better option for offline navigation (with regular bug fix and update)

I am using 808 as call and sms phone, android phablet for browsing, entertainment etc because of big screen. Just downloaded maps data through nokia suite, seem like the phone cannot update is because of software version. Will try to flash it to fp2 then to delight.

I will also register a flickr account for photo sharing. tongue.gif
Btw, your photo by 808 is nice. It is a good camera phone that easy to carry around.

Thanks^^ but due to the modern standard of mobilephotography, most of the time have to photoshop abit to balance out the overall dynamic range due to the 808's f /2.4 lens.

Just found out someone have just done custom firmware to his 808 dated Jun 22 2015, perhaps you can send your enquiries to him, good luck!

I am not really sure about the last ori update (i flash from stock to delight). But i think without delight, 808 don't even has torch light function and cannot view the information of a photo.

Stock rom has torch light function, u need to add from widget.
U can view photo info by pressing at the "5.3 MP" (depending on your photo size) at the center top of the photo.
The latest firmware version is 113.010.1508 which released around end of 2012.

Yes, all taken with 808 and no post editing. 808 is not so good in close up shot, it need a minimum of 20cm so that the object will be in focus (get more close with loseless zoom, but limited to max 8mp).

When it compare to lastest smartphone, smartphone now can have really short distance macro shot. So in term of bokeh, short distance (of smartphone) and big sensor (of 808) yield quite similar bokeh. But I will still say the winner is 808 because not all object we will get close to it, like moving child and some small animal (lipas, cicak). And last point is 808 is good at its natural color, samsung one is not bad but when compare to 808 will find it is a bit cold.

It is true that 808 was never meant for close macro shot, but the image details and quality from 808 remains a gold standard to all smartphones until now(others usually over processed the image, saturated and sharpens alot)

A sample of what can you do with 34MP/38MP for macro:

Cropped from the above image to FULLHD format

Hopefully those who still owns the 808 will continues to enjoy quality clicks from it^^

Wow, the dragonfly one is nice. How you measure its distance? Or just shoot from far away (as insect will fly away)? For stationary object like flower i measure 20cm with a "rock" hand sign (thumb to small finger around 20cm).

This might take a while to master, but i try to make it simple, by now u should know the autofcus for 808 is not that great, so, for dragonfly scene, i prefocused to my hand, then, using ur phone's screen (808 stil the king of under sunlight since 2012 lol) correct ur distance (move forward or backwards) until u feel ur image is sharp on ur screen, then click it. Its not 100% successful rate, but when u nailed the shot, u will have the same results as mine≧∇≦ have fun ~

Since the 808 is pretty much dead as a smartphone, wondering whether the camera and picture quality can rival any point and shoot for the same price (RM800).

in terms of camera function and feature, yes, any point and shoot will excel in this area. But in terms picture quality, here's a direct quote from GSMARENA review back in 2012 :
"The camera is the main reason everyone is interested in the Nokia 808 PureView. It was off to a flying start after emerging victorious from our blind test, comfortably beating the Olympus E-PL2, and matching the detail levels of our 5D Mark III DSLR so it seems Nokia got everything right here. "

quote reference:

the blind test:
http://www.gsmarena.com/pureview_blind_test-review-773.php

And the definition "dead" is more to the Symbian OS, but not the user or the phone itself, it is still alive and kicking with me for 3 years now^^

the price of 808 back then is around RM1600 - RM1800, i know the RM800 is the depreciation price after all these years, but still the price doesn't justify the 808's image quality if compared (even you bring up the new S7 edge, for example). The theory of the normal point and shoot is if you are able to have a sensor size which is larger than the 808 (41.3 megapixel 1/1.2 in CMOS FSI image sensor with 7728x5368 pixels), u will get better image quality in logic (but not theoretically, as the combination with lenses, sensors & software optimization are crucial producing the final image)

Actually I am quite new to nokia 808, I only owned it since Nov 2015 (brought from ebay at a price of $119.99, converted and include shipping 600+). So i compare it to camera ranged rm600+-.

For a p&s camera at rm600 wont has a chance to set the shutter speed and iso etc, so in camera function and feature, I still support 808. I believe that the image quality of nokia 808 can easily beat out those 1/2.3" compact cam, with default 26/28mm focal length. And even in video I also believe 808 is better as it has led light for video.

The image quality of 808 can be compare with a rx100 (rm1k+-) and won't lose much in every aspect. And the main reason I choose 808 is for its portability, which has a compact camera (rx100 also a compact cam) image quality in your pocket. If you can find a used or new one at 500+-, just go for it. It will not fail you, I strongly suggest it as I also start from p&s -> rx100 -> mirrorless -> 808.

Ps: The photos I attached is by 808 during CNY, handheld (no tripod), no post editing.

handshaked detected, but understandable^^ try to lean on something to steady your shots ( if u are not using a tripod, and i assume the shutter speed is around 1sec?)

below are 2 examples of handheld 2.7sec max long shutter for 808, if you are able to find place to rest ur hand:

Yerp, 1/8s, but for a smartphone to capture a firework I think is pretty amazing. And the photo I attach is taken from sunway Uni, handheld 2.7s. 808 lack an ois, which is very hard to get a steady 2.7s shot (I wont say impossible later got ppl can do it tongue.gif)

Not bad i would say for this shot^^ yup it is possible to hold still for 2.7 sec with more practice and find a suitable place to camp (without tripod lol) but dont hope for picture perfect or blur/shake free much ><

back then 2.7 sec is short, but fun and challenging (LRT from Masjid Jamik undertunnel to KLCC, if anyone interested to try):

to me, OIS on phone are double-edge sword, it is good while ur hand in motion, but if u would want to take landscape pictures with tripod, it wont go well at least, as the stabilizer are not able to idle even if u put on flat surface or tripod (unlike real camera options, u can switch OIS off)
