waaaaaaaaaaay back after WW2, the british still keen on hoarding the peninsular and singapore as colonial treasure chest. and there was a new threat, mainly the communism from USSR now spreading eastward hard into china and it's territory.
the british, in order to sustain their new colonial ruling, establish the malayan union in hope that all the peon that alive from the bloody war could be control en mass. but it was a setback, cause the majority of Malays, who are small percent of them are english educated (nobles people) decide to rebel and ditch the malayan union. by then UMNO was established and Malayan Union after enough pressure disband in favour of more UMNO oriented government call Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
the original purpose was never to included sabah and sarawak in the first place. it was British who brought the idea when communism was at it peak. Bumiputra status was MEANT only to alleviate the social economy inbalance between the already rich chinese and indian community and the poor malay. Bumiputra status was never enforce until the day when Founder of UMNO, Jaafar Onn realize it's original idea was futile decide to open UMNO membership to all race.
what did he get? kena kick out and branded as traitor to malay race.
so now we know UMNO are the one who start this "bumiputra status" and start the racial tension.
then came along LKY. his idea is great but was to extremist according to some, Tunku was skeptical for he believe it might bring good for unionship of both Federated Malay State and singapore, but bring disposition to racial imbalance.
then came sabah problem with Sulu, and Sarawak with Raja Putih bailing out his people.
from that they join us on 63 and singapore kena kick in 65, and forward the infamous 13 may 69 incident.
again UMNO never enforce bumiputra right accordingly until that incident in 69, UMNO kena b& and few years later a new UMNO was born and was head by our gracious mamakthir and the rest faham fahamlah sendiri.
