Yes EFS backup is important . Keep a copy in case of accident . You never know when an accident will happen
*
hm benny, this thread said that there is no efs partition for nexus 4, how did you backup yours?

according to the response here http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065 ..it seems that version 4.2 and above are having such problem..is it because of firmware issue on 4.2?
*

another possible way, is to reflash the stock images (you can stick to 4.2 images if you don't want the battery drain bug in 4.2.1)

in the xda thread (the great battery life impression) a few folks like undercover, and jeff mentioned that re flashing the stock images improved their battery life. they said something about incomplete firmware installed in the device during the manufacturing. kernel is different than firmware. so that might help too. they thought it was a placebo effect but they did noticed an improvement. they recommended using efrant's manual way, because you'll have full control of the process.

if that still fail, then request a replacement unit, might be a faulty wifi chip after all.

yeah, but bro cowithgun the thread is talking about possible incomplete firmware flash duing manufacturing.

It is basically recommending us to flash the stock images once we get our N4 to solve this issue by ensuring that all partitions are properly flashed (including firmware)

ROM and Kernel flashing won't touch the firmware's partition.

it is like when we flash a firmware update for our laptop's BIOS or hard drive, it is different than updating the driver.

cowithgun reply's here http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=57702872

Unrelated notes just need some answer. If i manage to get the phone from Digi, anyone willing to buy from me for RM1550?

I will take 2 to 3 units if there are stock available.
*

Do keep me posted about this too. I have a few friends that are interested in the N4.

or use Play Music instead. I find the move to cloud based music service better than I expected.

used to rely on my iTunes and have to sync the songs to the phone every time i have something new in the library,

with play music, everything is in the cloud, easier. not to mention, it is free if you already have your own collection of songs. don't have to pay for iTunes match

This is my first time rooting my phone so I want to ask:

I have used Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit to unlock and root my phone with flashing custom recovery.

Now I can proceed to flash kernel and ROM? How to proceed from now?

Thanks for the answers biggrin.gif
*
first, make a nandroid backup using your recovery and transfer this to a PC just in case.

2. pick a ROM that you think would be a good candidate at XDA.

3. and choose a different kernel if you want something that is different than the one that is included in the ROM

reboot to recovery, wipe system and data and cache/dalvik cache.

flash ROM zip file, then kernel

sorry for the misinformed information on my part. thanks for sharing, will read up more about this. why don't you chime in to the XDA thread as well? for discussion and sharing sake. as a ROM dev, your insight would be beneficial to the rest of us! smile.gif

anyone successfully get one at Johor?

I saw only 1 friend got his unit in JB Sutera Mall (but i think the sutera mall doesn't allow RM200 rebate)

as long as you bring the necessary document to the right place, then there shouldn't be any problem. go for Digi Stores listed in DiGi's website, and call the branch if you just want to confirm it, save your travelling time.

if you want to restore your apps quickly with the data intact, then look for options like Titanium backup, my backup pro etc.

when you switch rom, you can just restore these backups via these apps. Titanium even allow you to create a flashable zip file so you can just flash new rom+kernel+the zip file to restore your apps.

What's your preferred widget for CPU / batt widget?
I've used a few but not satisfactory
*
i don't really bother much about cpu usage, i just use cpu spy or cpu spy plus once in a while to check.

for battery widget, there is a lot out there. battery widget reborn has a nice ui.

I prefer battery monitor widget pro because it give detailed reading like mA and estimated hours etc. (you might want to disable the history logging function, or increase its interval to reduce wakelock by BMW. i disabled the history logging straight away)

both have in-notification drawer estimation and reading.

try the free version of both first

What does it mean by flash reset kernel ?
Which kernel is it?
*
open the motley link at my signature and search for reset. this reset kernel zip file is used if you are using stock ROM with a custom kernel, and you want to restore back the stock kernel.

Thx
How about if I'm using custom kernel n custom ROM. Do I need to flash reset kernel?
*

nope. let say you use AOKP+franco kernel.

and you want to change to faux or motley, just reflash the AOKP ROM without wiping, and then flash the other kernel.

this is because franco is using a different ram disk.

if you are using say franco r01, and updating to r02, just flah r02 in recovery.

TBH, N4 is the first device that i see that have to use all this reset kernel thing. from what i read this is because of the different ramdisk used by franco

i like to play safe and just follow the steps given by the kernel devs tongue.gif

true, and i think they can just include the reset function in their zip file. so it'll automatically restore the default stock kernel, before updating it with their kernel. is it possible?

Flashed to harsh's kernel successfully.. But now i dont find any menu to adjust the UV n freq .. Is it need to do manually by adb command ?
*

harsh already have a pre configured UV table that varies depending on the binned CPU you have. so IMHO, you don't need to UV further, it is already UV-ed to your binned CPU. further UV may cause instability.

if you still want to UV, you can use apps like faux's app or other alternatives.

wondering what the best and stable custom rom that you guys use currently  ?
*

If you want a no frill very close to stock ROM, MinCO by minooch has my vote.

CM based or AOKP based rom are better feature wise, just that there might be some bugs (i have not encountered any so far). Just select one that has a good review and opt for ones that use a longer release cycle,or will only push stable updates instead of bleeding edge nightlies. I am personally using MoDaCo's CM weekly release ROM. Might try AOKP again once they release MR2

if your place have a decent DiGi connection, then better keep it for three months than paying early termination fee. I use it on my Desire Z as a mifi when I am away from home, my housing area, DiGi can only get Edge.

I use U-Mobile's UMI 28 on my N4. (a good provider for N4, can get 17mbps at my home)

Digi if terminate within one month = 68+100=168

if use for full three months, and opt for auto payment and then terminate = 63*3=189

and you'll get 5GB of data every month. i rather spend the extra RM21 and use the 5GB data i get for three months instead.

Anyone staying in Sunway go KL frequently? I wanted Poetic Bumper but no time go KL due to lot of classes in coming week.
*
be warned though, a user asked and the hotspot one is poetic rev 1 with no warranty @ RM100. rev 1 is the one with peeling issues. better order from shirogawa from the states the rev 2 version at around 50 and with three years warranty.

did you cut your umob sim? any issues like no connection error so far?
*
cut mine at HotSpot. at first yes, what i did was to use a nail filer and make sure the edges are clean. you need to ensure the micro sim can fit nicely into the tray, otherwise it will say no connection, emergency only.
QUOTE(swimfan @ Jan 20 2013, 10:41 PM)
Thanks for the help guys! Yeah, the storage data is pretty straightforward I guess. I'm looking at ADB to backup the app data, but will need to read further on this. After looking my apps however, it doesn't look like I have that many I need to backup anyway.. just Whatsapp and ColorNote really.
*
you can copy whatsapp text from the sd card, under folder whatsapp. copy the whole folder to N4, install WA and it'll ask whether you want to restore mesages.
QUOTE(tantalus @ Jan 20 2013, 10:12 PM)
I just bought N4 tonight.

When calling with max volume, the phone headset sound is breaking a bit, is it normal for N4?
*
mine didn't break, still clear. you might want to test with another sim, and with another N4. if the other n4 is okay, ask for a replacement for your unit.

those are with 3g and data on...

but i have AFWall+ firewall that prevent any app from using 3g, except those i allow.

anyway, dont think that matter because if you have wifi, by default, N4 will use wifi.
*

true, and not rooted user can use the built in data management tool. pretty robust

go to

Settings>Data Usage. scroll down to the list of apps. click on one that you want to restrict when using 3G, scroll down and tick restrict background data

i have posted screenshots here http://j.mp/T7zmoT

notice that Google Currents, Play Music etc is restricted on mobile network. so zero data usage for those apps there. they'll only work in backgroud when on wifi, or only when you open the app on data connection

AFWall+/ droidwall more powerful though, can set for data roaming connection too.
