hey guys wanna ask, any of you guys who uses air brush, own a box with fan + exhaust pipe so you can do the air brush in room?

Today one of my friend who doing good in gunpla told me about this, because some of the condo has very tight management and will scold us if we do air brush/ spray can at common area like stair case there... (and spray it in room will definitely screw your room all over the places!)

I live in an high rise building and I don't think i can build the boot in my room.. either my neighbour will complain or family will get upset.. I usually do painting outside my house at the corridor common areas.. if your going to do it in the room make sure u get a proper mask.. it's not too wise to do it in an enclosed area..
*
understand that... I also prefer to do it outside if can...

But according to my friend, the purpose of the box is for you to do airbrush/ spray in room, just put the pipe outside the window, and the exhaust fan 'suppose to' suck the fume out through the pipe. (Not sure if the remain of the ink will jam the fan... sweat.gif)

QUOTE(General_Nic @ Feb 27 2013, 10:28 AM)
i bought a video equipment cooling exhaust fan, then get a large cardboard box, cut a hole at the back, install the fan at the hole. woahla, my own DIY painting booth  whistling.gif

once u have a painting booth, n u wanna spray inside your room, can, but make sure u r spraying at the window, n the exhaust is facing outside
*
BRILLIANT! thumbup.gif notworthy.gif

Just check with you, is this build strong enough to suck out fume from spray can? or strictly for air brush only?

yes it can suck spray can fumes, but since spray can fumes are thick, the fan clogs up easily, so actually it's more for airbrush  sad.gif
*
Mya be I will go buy those cheap cheap green color filter net and put it in front of the fan. But hope it will not 'block' the spray and make it bounce back sweat.gif

QUOTE(madmoz @ Feb 27 2013, 10:42 AM)
i usually AB in the balcony when I was still staying at my old service apartment. With a cardboard box so the paint doesn't land on anything else, and so that wind doesn't blow over the satay sticks.

now i AB outdoors in the garden, and with a cardboard box still.
*
landed property? in that case never need to worry lor~

Dunno if it's the same one, I have a spray booth too, for AB.
The good thing about the booth is that it have it's own filter and some sponge behind it, so that the air released through the exhaust are just air, no paint at all. Kept neighbours from bising....
*
Yes I think we're talking about the same item, for the sponge right, is it behind or in front of the fan? (Coz I wonder if sponge will completely block out the air flow)

QUOTE(General_Nic @ Feb 27 2013, 11:54 AM)
Im put aquarium filter sponge in front of the fan, for AB is good enough, but spray cans it clogs up  sweat.gif
I bought from Time Machine at rm200  icon_idea.gif
*
Can I check, any specific fan you bought? (I'm thinking if I can use those cheap cheap computer fans tongue.gif)

the sponge should be in front of the fan, to keep the fan clean and maximise airflow

my first DIY spray booth I used computer fans, it does work, but not so efficient, especially worse when come to spray cans
if you ever been to Low Yat Sri Computer, the place where they sell the fans, I bought the largest and noisiest fan there  tongue.gif
*
worse come to spray can, means the spray is too fast/ strong that the suction is not strong enough to flow out all the fume? hmm.gif I still have 1 pending project which will use all the spray cans... sad.gif (will buy AB afterward)

QUOTE(onnylam @ Feb 27 2013, 02:18 PM)
yep, from front: filter, 2xsponge, then fan. Tested the exhaust b4, even though 3 layers, suction is still strong.
just started AB, filter can see very dirty liao, but once I remove the filter, can see the sponge still very clean.
so can say that air that comes out from the exhaust are clean without paint.
*
hee hee, i'm thinking as long as the fume was sucked out, dun care liao, as long as it doesn't jam my fan icon_idea.gif brows.gif

YUp.

u sapu thick layer of mark sette in the surface 1st, then apply with the decal, after decal, re-apply setter coat again, & use cotton butt to press & remove the remaining water & setter. it should be stronge.
*
yeah, after i start using mark settler, the decal no longer fall off when i clean the dust off my gundams. They not even affected when i use small small brush to sapu it!

Question. Decals and lining first then top coat flat or the other round? Pls adv, gonna level up to painting my kits soon. Currently doing my research in internet and will buy the spray this week.

Btw, no MG GNX-603T fans here? I saw a modeller modded this kit in police theme and this encouraged me to level up in kits painting.
*
for my past 2 gundams, i do lining (during painting), then top coat, then decal last.

Might not be right but that's what I did sweat.gif

I read from somewhere, after top coat matt, the surface will become uneven and decals won't stick.
Mostly they do decals + lining then top coat. I need to get confirmation from here before i try, scared i might spoiled my kits.
*
i use semi-gloss top coat, it works perfect without any prob wink.gif

yup, flat coat should always be last. gloss/semi should still be ok. i like to decal-line-flat coat. that way, the top coat would create a smudge effect like actual dirt. so it doesn't look like an attempt to create panel lines.  thumbup.gif plus, i only line sparingly, i think dalong one is too messy.

for decal work after flat coat, you definitely need some form of glue. i tried once with water-based glue, then top coat over it. sticks just fine.
*
i always use mark setter. unless use those dry decal from bandai.

As for panel lining, yeah dalong one is like using ball pen to draw tongue.gif tongue.gif laugh.gif

Here you go, a very good source of information on how to do so. (And this is where I learn to scribe my strike freedom from)
