I'm currently working in a company where i get expose to Technical area like Server, networking, Firewall, Internet security and at the same time i got to learn the full cycle of ERP business flow.........Now i got 2 offer from 2 company, 1 is Network Engineer and the other is Junior ERP consultant, both paid me nearly same salary...just wanna know which 1 hv better future and can earn more money in long run....this seem like no turning back once i hv choose 1 of them....If i choose networking then i will not hv the chance to jump to ERP anymore and if i choose ERP then i will not getting back to networking ....And frankly speaking i like technical more but i dont like the disrespect from other coz they will look at u like cheap labour and treat u like dog...

QUOTE(kong5091 @ Mar 19 2006, 11:02 AM) ....And frankly speaking i like technical more but i dont like the disrespect from other coz they will look at u like cheap labour and treat u like dog... I am curious, why did you say they will perceive you as cheap labour? Personally, I don't believe there's no chance to make another career move if you don't like your current job in a specific area. If you don't like networking.. go and try ERP consulting.. or vice-versa. It may take oneself to adjust but the thing that you must develop is a good solid foundation and attitude for learning. With some background in the area of specialty, you'll catch up pretty easily. The IT world is moving so fast, everything you know now will be considered outdated in 3 years .. you will be constantly learning all the way. Just develop a good positive attitude towards learning and making the technology and business for work your company and slowly build your resume. Your employability and bigger salary will come later. Why worry? This post has been edited by netfan: Mar 20 2006, 01:58 AM

If the ERP is SAP or Oracle, by all means go into that field. Otherwise I feel that it is better to stick to the traditional technical area. Also it boils down to what u like. U prefer networking or consulting?

sure go for consulting, salary will up to 7-1+ k ...good future. Technical? means fix computer, network? Consultant is help company to find business, find customer. So company will treast u good as well, technical ...they js need u in urgent...when server down, internet down....

This is a fact: 3 out of every 4 dollars spent in IT is used to link ERP and CRM together. That's 75% of someone's resources dedicated to that branch of IT. While netowrking isn't a bad choice either, I believe what you mentioned about being precived as cheap labour kinda rings true...
Good luck!

still very subjective to me.
nowadays.. even an ERP consultant can hv a few division.. some doing process design, implementation, some doing pre-sales, some doing technical and etc.
u need to know what's ur scope if u r going towards ERP. the definition of 'consultant' hv changed few years back, 5 years ago... to become a consultant u need 7-10 years of specialised experience on that particular field. Now? even a fresh graduate can be a consultant.
choose wisely.

n/w will get saturated in short term. that means technical support u'll do will revolved around upgrading current system. setting up new infrastructure will be more fun but only rare case later on.
ERP has been around lately but have yet to bloom as the market ERP system is low-level entries. SAP is one big player, and there is definitely more room for ERP in da future.
correct me if i'm worng.

unless u r really keen and good in networking especially if u got the passion in it.
for ERP, sure u can get more salary especially in SAP.
as far as i am concerned......both also need to get a lot of certs
as i am workin as technicl support now....i understand wat u mean.
as for me, i did not get disrespect.....but i am the one who need to get the hands dirty.
for me, i like netwofking but SAP seems like better piece of cake.

i heard that Networking company earn not as much as ERP. So ur bonus, salary wont increase much.....how many company need to alway upgrade their network infrastructure after they establish? 5 years? 10 years? And as for maintenance sure their will hire someone technical to "Pau mountain Pau sea" ..... But for ERP is different, they have to pay them yearly fee...so ERP consulting company should earn a lot than Networking firm right?
