Some places in Europe have Drive-In sex boxes so you don't disturb the neighborhood.
![]() Having sex in a car can be awkward if you get caught. To prevent this awkwardness, some European cities have created drive in "Sex Boxes." They're basically parking spaces that have walls covering up the car so you can go along your business without disturbing the neighbors. The idea seems to have originated in Germany, but Zurich has recently proposed building them there too, so that prostitutes can work in a more discrete way. There are a lot of homes in Zurich that overlook the red light district. The police thinks they can't get rid of prostitution, but they can at least control it. This might be the happiest cemetery on earth! ![]() It's called the Merry Cemetery and it's located in the village of Sapanta, Romania. It's famous because all the tombstones are colorful and painted with scenes from the buried person's life. Some people even have poems about them engraved in their tombstones. It's an unusual cemetery because most other European cultures consider death to be something solemn. It's thought that this cemetery has a connection to the Dacian culture, which believes in the immortality of the soul and the belief that death is a joyful moment because it leads to a better life. Want to work for Google? Be prepared to wear this ridiculous thing on your first Friday ![]() It's no secret that Google is one of the most awesome workplaces in the world. Their offices are usually filled with a lot of amenities that make employee's lives easier. They have mini-kitchens all around so you can snack any time you want and you get things like "innovation Time" where you can spend 20% of your work time doing projects that you're interested in. On your first week, though, you will probably be made to look like a fool. New employees are called "Nooglers" (presumably a portmanteau of New and Googler) and they're given a propeller beanie cap in Google colors that they are supposed to wear to the office on their first Friday working for the tech giant. |

A member of the Italian parliament was a porn star. She kept appearing in porn while in office!
![]() Ilona Staller was born in Hungary in 1951, but she moved to Italy in 1973 after she got married. There, she met a pornographer and started a radio show called "Voulez-vouz coucher avec moi?," a French phrase that translates into "Do you Want to Go to Bed with Me?" She adopted the name Cicciolina (Cuddles) which became her porn name. After the radio show, she started making porn films in the late 70s. She started her political career in 1979, but didn't get elected until 1987, where she went to the Italian parliament. While in office, she once offered to have sex with Saddam Hussein in return for peace in the middle east. She would offer Hussein again in 2002, and to Osama Bin Laden in 2006. Interestingly, she did not stop making porn appearances while she was in office. She made a film in 1987, and appeared in Playboy magazines while she was in Parliament. She was also known for giving speeches with one breast exposed. The mountains of Saturn's moon Titan are named after the mountains of Middle Earth! ![]() Titan is Saturn's largest moon and is the only natural satellite known to have a dense atmosphere. Titan is also the only other object besides Earth with clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid. Titan is actually composed of water ice and rocky material. Titan has been described as geographically young, and it has many different types of geographical features. Interestingly, each group of features is named after a different works of fantasy. For example, craters are named after deities of wisdom, labrynthi are named after planets in Dune. By far one of the largest groups of named features are mountains which are named after mountains in JRR Tolkien's middle earth. For example, you can find the Misty Mountains, Mount Doom and even Mount Erebor which was featured in 2012's The Hobbit. Filesharing app LimeWire was sued for $75 TRILLION! ![]() Along with Napster, LimeWire was one of the most popular applications that people used to download mp3s illegally. At its peak, LimeWire had 4 million daily users. It used a similar Peer-to-Peer technology as Napster that allowed people to share files, mostly MP3s of popular songs. Thirteen major recording companies sued LimeWire LLC for fostering copyright infringement. As the case progressed, the music studios argued that LimeWire was liable for every time a file was illegally downloaded through their system. Their estimate was that there had been 500 million illegal downloads, which would come out to a penalty of $75 trillion ($75.000.000.000.000!) Ultimately the court decided that number was ridiculous and said that the company was liable only once per song, and the damages would amount somewhere between $7.5m to $1.5b. The parties eventually settled for $105 million. |

Snoop Dogg tried to rent the entire country of Liechtenstein for a music video!
The tiny country of Liechtenstein lies sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria. Although it only has a population of around 35,000, it's well known for being popular among the very rich for tax haven purposes and for vacationing. In 2010, rapper Snoop Dogg asked the government if he could rent the entire country to use it as a set for a music video. The authorities considered it, but ultimately he was denied because his management team didn't allow for adequate timing. That was the first time anyone requested to rent out the entire country. However, after that incident, they changed their minds and put the country up for rent for the small sum of $70,000 a night. |

Blond and Blonde technically don't mean the same thing
![]() The correct use of “blonde" is for a woman with yellow hair for males, it's “blond.” The terms aren’t completely synonymous. The term comes from Old French’s “blund” which literally means midway between gold and light chestnut. This means that blond and blonde are one of the few word in English that has gender differentiation. While in other languages it's pretty common (for example, in Spanish it would be rubio and rubia), English has very few words that change when used for the male and female gender. Diarrhea was a leading cause of death among soldiers during the American Civil War! ![]() Confederate soldiers were starving much of the war. The Union troops had ample supply of food for most of the war, though. Their main struggle was during the battle at Chattanooga. However, they developed nutritional deficiencies during the war. Prison camps saw the worst of these documented nutritional deficiencies. Diarrhea and dysentery caused more deaths than the actual war did along with other diseases. The diarrhea was brought on by horrible sanitation conditions and underprepared foods. Interestingly, there was a code of honor among Civil War soldiers against shooting a soldier while using the facilities. Harry Andrews was pronounced dead due to spiral meningitis, revived by experimental adrenaline, and went on to serve in France during WWI ![]() He was dead for awhile and they were getting ready to dissect him when a doctor suggested they give him a shot of the “new stuff” which was adrenaline into his heart. His heart started beating again, but he was blind and paralyzed. He managed to regain his sight and movement and was one of two who survived the spiral meningitis outbreak that infected 7,000 soldiers! |

Guards stationed at the Berlin Wall received medals for shooting unarmed civilians.
![]() The guards who manned the Berlin Wall were actual soldiers who made all the compromises and received all the perks that come with being part of the military. One such perk was possibility of earning an infamous Medal for Exemplary Border Service. It was generally given to guards who had successfully shot unarmed civilians. For example, when a soldier shot 40 year old Ernst Munst, he was given one of these medals for “[handling] his weapon superbly and [putting] it into use masterfully.” Aka: shooting the unarmed civilian square in the head. The youngest king in history wasn’t even a day old! ![]() The youngest (and possibly most adorable) king ever was Alfonso XIII of Spain, who was crowned the ruler of Spain on the day he was born (side note: best birthday present ever). The reason for this is that his father had had died a year before his birth. The French newspaper Le Figaro described the young king as “the happiest and best-loved of all the rulers on Earth.” Alfonso didn’t have to take care of any serious duties as a kid. His mother was appointed regent during his minority. However, on his 16th birthday, he assumed control of the state (again: best birthday present ever). The word ‘fart’ comes from an Old English word meaning ‘to break wind’ ![]() As you may have guessed, ‘fart’ is not the medical word for the gross/hilarious act of passing gas. The medical term for gas released from the intestinal is ‘flatulence.’ ‘Fart’ is a slang term coined in 1632 (yes, even back then people farted). The Oxford English Dictionary defines the transitive verb form of ‘fart’: To send forth as wind from the anus. The word comes from the Old English word ‘feortan’ which means ‘to break wind.’ The OED mentions that the word ‘fart’ is ‘not in decent use.’ However, it has still been used by many great English poets, like Geoffrey Chaucer. |

The shortest regularly scheduled flight in the world takes 2 minutes!
The world’s shortest scheduled airline flight (and therefore possibly the world’s most relaxing airline flight) is a 1.7 mile leap between two Orkney Islands just north of Scotland: Westray and Papa Westray. Operated by Loganair, the flight takes about 2 minutes, and can be watched from start to end in the source! In contrast, the world’s longest scheduled airline flight is a 9,505 mile exertion from Changi International Airport to Newark Liberty airport. It’s operated by Singapore Airlines and takes about 18.5 hours. However, they are hoping to reduce the flight to 8,576 miles and a 17-hours duration. Ancient Chinese nobility committed suicide by eating a pound of salt. ![]() Too much salt (like too much of most things) can be deadly. In fact, you need to take only 1 gram of salt per kilogram of weight to die. This was often used as a method of ritual suicide amongst Chinese nobility-who were often the only people who could afford large amounts of salt. However, too little salt poses the same danger. Salt is essential to the body and if you drink too much water, it can flush the salt out of your system and cause a fatal Hyponatremia. This is what killed a woman by the name of Jennifer Strange who entered a “hold your wee for a wii” competition. 50 Cent has set a goal of feeding 1 billion people in Africa by 2016. ![]() We all know that 50 Cent is a world renowned rapper, but did you know that he’s also a business man and avid philanthropist-often at the same time. He has teamed up with Pure Growth Partners to launch a charitable energy drink called Street King, in order to aid in combating world hunger. For every purchase of Street King, a portion of the sales will go towards providing a daily meal to an underprivileged child around the world. The mission statement for this initiative is to feed a billion people in Africa by 2016. “50 Cent and I share a common vision,” says Chris Clark, founder and CEO of Pure Growth Partners, “To address the world’s growing problems through smart and sustainable business models.” |

Brain-dead people still have reflexes!
One of these is known as the Lazarus Sign, where a patient raises their arms in the air and folds them over their chest like an Egyptian mummy. The name comes from a bible passage where Jesus is said to have raised an man named Lazarus from the dead. The reflex is often preceded by shivering and goose bumps. Then the patient will lift their forearms, followed by their upper arms, and then the arms fall, either touching or crossed over, towards the neck or chin. The reflex is similar to the knee jerk reflex you may have been tested on at the doctor’s office, as neither requires brainpower to occur. Patients who are being kept alive by only life-support machines and exhibit this often confuse doctors and cause them to think that they have been reanimated. Visitors by the patient’s bedside have also been frightened or convinced that a miracle is happening. The reflex is most common minutes after breathing apparatus has been removed from a dying patient or when doctors are testing for apnea (a suspension of independent breathing). A man named Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to die in place of a stranger in a concentration camp. Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar. Born January 8, 1894 as Rajmund Kolbe, he was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1982 for taking a stranger’s place in the Auschwitz concentration camp. To the Catholic readers, this may not be a surprise, as he is the patron saint of drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, and the pro-life movement. The late Pope John Paul II even declared him "The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century." During World War II, Kolbe provided shelter to refugees from Greater Poland, including more than 2,000 Jews that he hid from Nazi persecution in his friary. He was also an anti-Nazi radio host during this time. On February 17, 1941, however, he was caught and arrested by the Gestapo. On May 25, he was moved to Auschwitz. In July of that year, a man from Kolbe’s barracks vanished, in what was believed to be an escape attempt. In order to discourage further attempts, the deputy camp commander picked ten men from the same barracks to be starved to death in Block 13, which was notorious for torture. One of the chosen men, named Franciszek Gajowniczek, was hysterical over the idea of never seeing his family again. Kolbe took his place. During the starvation time, Kolbe led the men in song and prayer. After an incredible three weeks, Kolbe and three others were still alive. They were all killed by an injection of carbolic acid. The worst part was that the man who was thought to have escaped was found drowned in the latrine. Gajowniczek survived to be liberated from Auschwitz, though, which means Kolbe’s sacrifice was still worthwhile. Though his sons had died, Gajowniczek’s wife had survived. He lived with her until her death in 1977. Gajowniczek himself died in 1995. White bread was the original pencil eraser. ![]() Before erasers were invented, people used a rolled up piece of white bread to erase graphite. Some artists still use bread today to lighten charcoal or pastel marks. This changed when Edward Naime, an English engineer invented the eraser in 1770. The eraser is called a rubber in some places. The story is that Naime grabbed some rubber instead of bread on accident to erase something and realized its ability. For this reason it received its name, because it could rub out pencil marks. It was the first practical application found for the substance. Rubber, like bread, was perishable and went bad over time. Charles Goodyear invented the process of vulcanization in 1839 and made rubber erasers common. Then in 1858, Hymen Lipman patented attaching erasers to the ends of pencils. Later the patent was revoked since it combined two things already invented instead of inventing something new. More Americans die of obesity than any other country. ![]() This is sad but true. The obesity crisis in the USA has gotten so bad that there are more obesity-related deaths in the United States than in Mexico, Germany, Spain, Austria and Canada combined. The main medical problems caused by excess weight are type II diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Many more are also brought to an untimely end by injuries caused by falling and getting stuck in small spaces. Obesity is one of the largest health problems America has ever faced. It is difficult to help people as they will often exaggerate their height and lie about their weight. Obesity-related problems also cost over $417 billion every year! So what’s causing this? It’s not what you might think. Diet and exercise can play a part, but there is much more to it. Sleep deprivation, climate, quitting smoking without support, genetics and the types of gut bacteria you have can all affect your chances of being overweight. Lamborghini started out as tractor manufacturers. ![]() Automobili Lamborghini, as it is officially called, was founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini following World War II. Lamborghini was the son of viticulturists (grape growers) in Northern Italy. During World War II, after working as a mechanic, he went into business building tractors from leftover military hardware that had finished being used from the war effort. When the war had ended, he continued and expanded his business of tractor manufacturing, and by the 1950’s it was already one of the largest agricultural equipment manufacturers in Italy. With a business so large and so profitable, Lamborghini began to grow an interest in expanding into automobiles. This was because he had had an interest in cars since childhood, and even owned several luxury cars. In 1958, he purchased a Ferrari, but was displeased with how noisy he felt they were. He thought they were too noisy to be proper road cars, and that they were more like repurposed track cars. One day, the clutch in Lamborghini’s Ferrari was broken, and he realized it was the same clutch he used on his tractors. When he went to Ferrari to ask for a replacement, Ferrari said he was just a little tractor maker and could not know anything about sports cars. This compelled him to expand into making a luxury car in his vision, which was the start of today’s Lamborghini. |

Moose and Alaskan Huskies will team up to protect themselves from wolves!
![]() Sounds like an odd combination, but it’s actually quite effective. In Alaska, huskies are plentiful and extremely compatible with the environment yet they have developed an odd cohabitation with local moose. During desperate times of cold or extreme snow moose will wander into human areas, drawn by the fresh smell of straw used for dogs’ bedding. This became a routine occurrence and eventually became mutually beneficial. Because the dogs are tethered and not a direct threat to the much larger moose, the larger animals will bed down among the dogs, who will work as sentries to alert the moose if a wolf is approaching. If there is a wolf, the moose will often try to scare it away or defend the dogs! If you see Bigfoot in Texas, it's legal for you to kill it ![]() A man wrote to the state of Texas asking about the legality of killing Bigfoot, should he ever run into it while hunting. He was referring to a specific statute that defined which animals were legal to hunt and kill in Texas. The official from Texas explained that the statute refers to which animals are considered game animals, a specific list of animals that are legal to hunt. The man's fear is that because Bigfoot wasn't included on the list, he couldn't kill it. Texas responded by saying that the state only defines non-game animals, as animals that are native to Texas and that are not protected. If there's an animal that is not native to Texas and it's not an endangered species, then it's fair game. This means that because Bigfoot is not officially recognized as an endangered species, you could theoretically kill it while in Texas with no repercussions. |

It has been scientifically proven that the less you know, the more you think you know.
This is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. The basic idea behind it has been a well-established rule for centuries. Charles Darwin, for instance, has stated "Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge". It has been empirically proven in 1999, by psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger in their report "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments". This was proven through a study in which participants take tests of their logical reasoning skills, grammatical skills, and humor, and then estimate their own abilities in those subjects. Those participants who scored in the bottom quartile grossly overestimated their own abilities. Those in the12th percentile had estimated themselves to be in the 62nd percentile. Overall, Dunning and Kruger found that incompetent people overestimate their own skill level, fail to recognize the skill of other people and fail to recognize their own inadequacy. Also, as they receive training to improve their skills, incompetent people tend become more aware of their own inabilities. Read more about the Dunning-Kruger effect in Wikipedia. For a similar, less scientific theory, check out the "Peter Principle". |

![]() McDonald's SALADS are more fattening than their burgers. ![]() You can see for yourself in their nutrition facts. A hamburger at McDonald's has 9 grams of fat. A cheeseburger has 12 grams of fat. The Premium Caesar salad with crispy chicken has 17 grams of fat. The Premium Southwest Salad with crispy chicken and the Premium Bacon Ranch Salad with crispy chicken both have 20 grams of fat. On top of that, SALAD DRESSING adds EVEN MORE fat. If you want to add Creamy Southwest Dressing, it's 6 more grams of fat. The Ranch Dressing has 15 grams of fat. The Creamy Caesar Dressing has 18 grams of fat. So, if you get a salad with crispy chicken and salad dressing, you could be consuming 35 grams of fat - the fat equivalent of 4 hamburgers. Only 40% of the population can smell Cyanide. The ability to smell cyanide is genetic. ![]() Cyanide is a deadly poison and people have described it as having a "bitter almond" smell. However, not everyone is capable of smelling cyanide. Evolutionarily, the ability to smell the "bitter almond" smell of cyanide was an advantage, because the smell warns you away from eating poison. However, most people today don't have this ability. Have you ever wondered why piggy back rides are called piggy back rides?
![]() Early forms of the phrase "piggyback" date back to the 16th century with "pick pack," "pick back" and "pick-a-pack," which make no reference to pigs at all! "Pick" back then used to mean the same as "pitch" does now: to throw or place (e.g. "pitch a tent"). "Pack" was probably a reference to something being carried so "pick pack" or "pick-a-pack" meant to place something. The alternative, "back", implies that you're carrying something on your back. By the 18th century people were saying "pickaback". As the origin of the phrase started to get lost, "pickaback" evolved into "piggyback", which we use today. There's a man who is 'allergic' to Wi-Fi. When he's around a wi-fi signal, it makes him feel "dizzy, sick and confused." It's a condition called "Electromagnetic Sensitivity". With the increase in the availability of public wi-fi, this guy has had to drastically go out of his way to avoid the signals. "I feel like an exile on my own planet. It's almost impossible to find somewhere without wi-fi nowadays.". "Dumbledore" means "bumblebee". Procter & Gamble's lawyers argued that Pringles are not potato chips because they are only 40% potatoes, to get out of paying a potato chip tax. ![]() Most British foods are exempt from the Value Added Tax, but potato chips (or crisps) and "similar products made from the potato, or from potato flour," do not get this exemption. Hoping to get out of millions in taxes, Procter & Gamble argued that Pringles are not potato chips, since the majority of the product is not from potatoes. This case has been appealed all the way to the Supreme Court of Judicature. Lord Justice Jacob rejected P&G's claim that Pringles lack "potatoness" and thus declared that Pringles are potato chips and have to be taxed. Ironically enough: in the 1970s, the U.S. government refused to allow Procter & Gamble to refer to Pringles as "potato chips". The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled that Pringles cans had to contain a label describing the product as "potato chips made from dried potatoes". |
