Dude, you should have researched on the hardware specs first before purchase. Also, the usb slot on default Unifi router is for diagnosis only.. Can't be used for data storage.
*
can be used for cooling pad for the router also biggrin.gif

This is a common issue with 2.4Ghz nowadays. The band is getting too congested and there's a lot of things that will interfere with it.

Bluetooth, dect phone and microwave oven all run on 2.4Ghz. I face similar issue previously and manage to fix it recently. Apparently, one of my neighbours is using a wireless baby monitor which messed up the 2.4Ghz band.
*
An eye for an eye. You should use a 2.4GHz jammer to disrupt his devices.

Hi, could I get a confirmation whether RT-AC66U support beamforming or not as there is no option to enable it or disable it as RT-AC68U does.
I notice that RT-AC66U 5GHz wifi could only run channel 36, 40, 44, 48. Is this intended?

Hi,

I have reset the router and upgraded the firmware online to the newest version. Still the same issue.

the bottom of the router is very hot after several hours.
*
RT-AC68U comes with Broadcom SoC. Broadcom SoC usually runs hotter than other brand SoC. It feels warm because the heatsink works. Don't worry too much about it as Asus had designed well on the thermal dissipation.

is the coverage of AC68U better than N66U?

Currently i have the N66U .  recently just upgrade to Unifi.  Change my placement of router to the living room.  and up stairs bedroom suffer from low signal strength.

Is upgrading to AC68U be any beneficial over the N66U in terms of coverage?

Please advice.
*
If you are looking for a marginal upgrade, RT-AC68U could do the job. If you are looking for significant upgrade, RT-AC68U doesn't made the cut. You would need a mesh networking system or multiple access point.

The service centre can diagnose and fix modem overheating issue ?
*
Asus router with Broadcom SoC generally runs hotter but usually not hot enough to warrant a worry. What's the exact temperature? My Asus RT-AC66U runs at 60 degree C.

I dont know the exact temperature, but this is what I found out.

1) Normal internet surfing / streaming -> no problem
2) Heavy download -> After 5 hrs, wifi malfunction.
3) Heavy download with modem elevated few cm from the surface -> After 12 hrs, wifi malfunction.
4) Heavy download with modem elevated few cm from the surface and fan directly blow onto the modem -> After 24 hrs, no problem

So, it's looks clear to me the heat is the main issue here. When wifi malfunction, i still can connect to the modem using ethernet  port and connected to the internet. Changing wifi channel doesn't help.
*
Yeah router by right should operate without a single problem for days without the need external cooling.

watch lot of review
now thinking get AC86U or AC5300
but find out some review AC86U internet speed higher than AC 5300
*
What do you mean by "higher internet speed"?
Higher WAN to LAN throughput?
Higher WAN to Wireless throughput?
Higher wireless link speed due to the signal strength difference?

Anyway RT-AC5300 had higher wireless bandwidth and higher WAN to LAN throughput so I would consider that faster.

You see sometimes just because it's tested at the same location, there are still variables such as interference on a specific channel, whether beamforming is activated and also antenna placement just to name few of the variables. Hence, you can't conclude that RT-AC86U is better than RT-AC5300.

My RT-AC66U channels are severely crippled and I need other channels to be available to avoid interference but unfortunately was unable to do so as you could see. Is there anyway to enable the channels that are legally available in Malaysia? I had hunted few forums here and there and there's no effective solution.

Time to upgrade the router.

Probably won't get an Asus again since Asus fucked the non-US customer over the FCC regulations regarding the 5GHz channels.

Hi zher4883,

May I know where do you bought the router from? Different region may have different channel available.

Thank you
*
Not sure where it's bought from since my cousin bought it for me but it seems to be either Canada/US

Yep, Canada/US/EU model have limited 5GHz channels, as the FCC have strict regulations regarding 5GHz channels there.
*
I knew about the FCC regulations but I would like to enable bands according to my region since quite a numbers of router enable channels base on region.
By the way, Europe is not as restrictive as US in terms of channels available to be used.

If it's an actual US model, you might not be able to do that as the channel restrictions are hardcoded. Not sure about Asus but that's the way it is with Mikrotik. They have 2 variations for each model, one for US and one for ROTW.
*
Since you are one of the prominent Mikrotik users in this forum, what's your thought on hap AC 2? Was thinking to get one of it and try it out.
