Hi, ASUSMy, good day to you
Please advise for the following, for the purpose of maintaining the highest speed of wifi broadband signal/usage for the whole house especially around some far corners on 1st floor (Maxis is installed on ground floor hall):

1. Which two Asus router model(s) are most suitable for use, cost is no issue, and I can choose?

2. What are the most applicable methods/solutions for my new MaxisFibre (20Mbps, without IPTV), e.g. additional router such as AC87 model serves as access point, bridging, etc. (working with Technicolor TG784n v3, because I need to use maxis phone line)?

3. Having purchased the powerful Asus router to work with existing TM/Maxis hardware, I may purchase additional product such as EA-N66 device for use as AP and also function with a non smart TV, would it work to stream HD video from NAS system (with WD EX2 6T)?

4. Can I connect devices e.g. NAS, Oppo 103D BDP, PS4 to the Asus router's ethernet ports, any conflict or how it would work best i.e. wired or wifi?

5. Or please you may advise what else I should buy from Asus to make things work seemlessly, mainly to stream music, HD video, using Skype, transfer of files and playing games.

Note that we would have more devices (10, including mobil phones) utilizing the wifi service in the house at the same time.

Also, on 1st floor, we can only detect about 10 Mbps (down) & 5Mbps (up) with 1 device connected, but at very close distance from TG784n a consistant 20Mbps is always detected.

I found a site telling that Asus router can be configured and connected in between the TM modem & TG784n, and it works.

Thanks for helping.

Currently, I am using maxisfibre 20 without IPTV service, and planning to buy the Asus Ac87 very soon to be hooked up with technicolor v3. Questions with regards for max wifi speed/strength:

1. Which way to hook up is more appropriate, i.e. ac87 in between the TM modem and technicolor. The TM modem WLAN outlet to ac87 WLAN, ac87 erthernet lan outlet to technicolor erthernet lan port??

(Note: I have a dect phone hooking up with the technicolor and is working. So, I still want the phone to be working with the technicolor and with the addition of new ac87 router, please.)

2. To back off, the question should "will ac87 be working with maxisfibre, and how? Please help.

Just purchased the WD ex2 8T to be set up as "fast" home cloud entertainment center, hoping it will work. Will appreciate all the helps & advices provided. Thanks.

Hi ASUSmy, many thanks.

I have looked at it before (together with the unifi setup); I wasn't sure that time and don't want to mess around when setting up. With you re-confirmation, I am now told that it indeed is a good working method with the ac87 firstly receiving the TM modem WLAN wire. I believe this method will ensure that I will get super fast Asus wifi speed and strength, rather than the technicolor max 400Mbps, am I right, please? (Surely, I also need other devices, by design, to match Asus high wifi speeds in order to work out....)

Really am appreciating your prompt constructive response, really helping.

Actually, last week did not get ac87 from convention center (KLCC) PC fair. Also, two weeks ago, found non ac87 stocks at lowyat (strange, so demanding by users!) Don't like to buy from Lazada (although is cheaper). Please where can I buy it at an authorized asus shop in KL. Thanks again. You are THE best smile.gif

ASUSmy, good day and thanks.

Will be shopping on X'mas and open the box on boxing day. Yesterday, a good guy completed the basic start-up of WD ex2 NAS with success. Transferred testing WAV files from PC to NAS (wifi n), about 45MB each and took 12 seconds. Not super fast but OK. Waiting to test with ac87.

Coming weekends, will be hands-on with ac87.... Merry X'mas to U...

Hi lau6311,

You can visit Low Yat Plaza Sri Computer, Viewnet or C-zone if you would like to purchase the RT-AC87U.

Thank you
*
Hi ASUSmy and thanks, now I have this AC87 router from Sri Computer, a fantastic sales guy "Hou". Basic setup at home is OK. But a few questions, appreciating of your kind support. icon_question.gif

1. I am not able to have Technicolor internet functioning for working in conjunction with AC87 (set as a router), how if possible ? (I am hoping that, since I am powering up Technicolor, I should use its internet functioning for additional flexibility in supporting other wifi devices functioning with internet service on the ground floor, as the modem/AC 87/Technicolor located. The powerful AC 87 to support ground & upper floors for the needs. Tk-Link power plugs to support hard corners of upper floor.)

I have AC87 hooked up between TM modem & Technicolor, modem ethernet cable "out" connecting to AC87 WAN, AC87 ethernet port 3 (selected as VOIP enable) out to Technicolor WLAN and as usual it has the dect phone working. Note that the AC87 is working, but Technicolor LED lights showing broadband/wifi/phone lines "green" (no devices are connected to all ethernet ports, and no internet LED is lighting up), but my PC can detect Technicolor wifi signal but no internet service.

2. Why AC87 is showing a low 216.7 Mbps (I used "wifi analyzer" apps), my other wifi router/extender (Technicolor, Tk-Link power plugs 4230 wifi kit) are showing 300 Mpbs at the same time ? Note that all my wifi devices (PC, notebook are not AC grade but a mix of n & g.)

To appraise AC87 powerful router, it provides a strength of -40 dB as compare to Techicolor -68 dB, power plug -65 dB (a few meters away) on the upper floor where my PC is located. Actually, the Technicolor is a good wifi router with good strength.

Good news, note also that my WD EX2 8T when connected to AC87 erthernet port is showing only "green" LED blinking. Earlier showing a mixed of green & yellow LED with green blinking of the EX2 when used with Technicolor.

Thanks

Base on the report, AC wireless doesn't able to provide you LAN Speed.....maximum around 200+mbps...base on report , personally i wish to buy but still under review.

got people say AC wireless unable to provide wide range compare than 802.11n wireless
*
Yes, you are right. LAN speed (ac87 ethernet ports are 1Gbps) is much faster (cabled) and AC wifi "practically" is about >>500Mbps for 5Ghz, and it is better than max n <480 Mbps. I need the wifi speed in the house. Time is more valuable than small $$, sitting there for hours for a slower progress. I hope it is a right move. Hoping your review is affirmatively positive. smile.gif

Also, My WD EX2 NAS is working at 1Gbps by ethernet cable with ac87; believe it helps the wifi speed.

As planned, there are a few devices with AC wifi capability to be purchased.

Now I can hook up the AC87 ethernet port to two of mf my Oppo 103D (n wifi & 100 Mbps LAN capable) for HD movies & HD songs (and HD youtube full moives); PS4 (wifi), Yamaha AS801 amp (bluetooth), smart TV..... cool.gif

NAS is so importantly as specially on speed, better to use ethernet cable (personally i think la) , but is too far then have no choice to use wifi.

im also thinking whether want to invest in wireless AC or not due to AC coverage not far than 802.11n
*
Hi lucklyghost, your good advice is much appreciated, many thanks.

All these devices/equipment are installed next to one another (TM modem, AC87, Technicolor, Oppo, TV, WD NAS, Chromcast.) As possible, ethernet cables should be used. (Not sure I also can make use of the Technicolor fast ethernet ports 100 Mbps ?)

Actually, there are other "good" AC routers. The recent KLCC convention center was showing "yet to be available soon" TP-Link AC router, forgot model number, about < RM600. Asus AC68 has very good reviews.

Not sure of your usage, and I am new to these technologies and experience. The fact is I am struggling to optimize the WD NAS. At times, I need to learn from you.... Cheers.... tongue.gif

(n wifi is at best by 600 Mbps, older devices may be 480 Mbps. AC seems like > 1000 Mbps. Not sure it is right)

im lousy la ~~ better learn with all sifu here.

im also planning to deploy a NAS as my personal cloud storages, how about you, what is your usage on your NAS ?

Chromcast - is this good ?

Since you using Wireless AC, how is the converges that you found out ? really not so wide?
*
We both can learn from sifus here....And share experiences.

Due to high $$ of other branded NAS, I selected WD EX2 8TB. I like the new Asus 5102/4 NAS, but the empty casing is abour RM2xxx, no go. Many go for synology and I like ds415play with HDMI and audio digital outputs, but also $$$. For the price, WD is OK. NAS is a good way to go with, when you have much contents and a few members to share with. My S'pore members can also access my NAS. He is using 200 Mbps service and helping our NAS for faster transfers.

We have no AC devices to enjoy with AC87 at the moment, need to upgrade some as planned.

I am new to Chromecast, just got it. Believe it is optional. Next will be my new Xioami 4G note.... nod.gif

ASUSmy, I am not able to activate router RT-87AC for AC mode 5GHz, please advise how to setup for with correct basic settings. smile.gif

I recently purchased a TP-Link T4U USB adapter (867Mbps AC + 300Mbps N) and it works fine but only max out at 300 Mbps in N mode at channel 1+5, never functioning at AC mode at 5GHz with router 87AC. The testing was made with the router sit next to T4U adapter for easy communication.

Can router 87AC function with 5GHz in N mode, didn't function 5GHz N mode? Can router function at the same time with 2.4GHz N mode?

Purpose to buy this thrusted expensive 87AC router is for its strong high speeds wifi signals (1200+600+600Mbps). Appreciating your help. Thanks.

Hi lau6311,

Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz are running together for dual-band router. You can differentiate them easily by using different SSID name.  RT-AC87U is a dual band router with the max speed of 600 Mbps for 2.4GHz and 1734 Mbps for 5GHz.

And by setting the channel bandwidth to 80MHz when connecting to the 5GHz, you sould be able to see the full speed.

Thank you
*
Hi Asusmy, your message is very clear and helpful, much appreciated.

Earlier, I did set 2.4GHz and 5GHz with different SSIDs. By reading from some useful forums before hand, I learned to set 5GHz for bandwidth 80MHz and 2.4GHz for 40MHz in order to potentially benefitting with the full speed of both bands provided by the router. In the 87AC wireless manual: "Hide SSID" is highlighed for "NO" for both 2.4 & 5GHz.

However, I could not detect or see the 5GHz activities. I explain:
I am using wifi tool such as the "Acrylic" to detect/see the wifi activities. I could see 87AC selected a SINGLE channel 6 in 2.4GHz with strong signals, but could NOT see similar but "empty" 5GHz activities (means no highlighted channel & selected frequency band) when clicking the 5GHz graph. Was it that I interpreted incorrectly.

Please help: I would want to utilize high speed 5GHz wifi for movies/music streaming, etc.. I believe Asus 87AC is a wonderful tool that can accomplish a challenging job. I admit that I am NEW in the IT world and much to learn.

Notes:
1. When choosing 2.4 GHz for 20 or 20/40 MHz band width, "Acrylic" detected max speed is 217.6 Mbps; changed to 40 MHz, it showed uprating to 450Mbps (double up, I guess it became instant bi-directional data flow). Question: Why it was NOT showing max 600 Mbps design speed? How do I get design 600 Mbps at 2.4GHz (I mean showing the product max speed, practical speed is expected to be lower)? I can see other detected routers showing 300 and 54 Mbps, a consistent sign.

2. I would talk to TP-Link for setup procedure for T4U USB AC (867+300) adapter. The setup is too "automatic" choosing channel 1+5 and tested speed is 145 Mbps N mode at 6m away, without a chance to chose channel and 2.4/5GHz bands. I am hoping Asus can lead the way. High end router is a complex but a wonderful gadget, and Asus 87AC deserves the praise and I need to show its strength.

3. For QoS setting, I like to activate adaptive QoS and to 'Enable Smart QoS' to be "ON". Please advise what upload & download bandwidth I should use? I am having maxis fibre 20 Mbps and always detecting very close to 20 Mbps. Or showing me the right way od doing.

Many thanks again to you--- ASUSmy.....

Hi lau6311,

You unable to detect the 5GHz band activities because you not connecting to it? You can connect one band at a time using the wifi adapter.

May I ask, are you able to scan the 5GHz SSID from your PC or phone?

As for your 2.4GHz, the MAX you can get is actually 300Mbps based the spec i found on the website. That's why you cannot get 600Mbps.

http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details...Archer+T4U#spec

The upload and download bandwidth are based on your Internet package, if your package is 20MB download and 20MB upload, just put the same in the QoS setting.

Thank you
*
Hi ASUSmy

You are right, cheers. My TP T4U 2.4GHz N mode is designed for max at 300 Mbps.

My issue is NOT able to utilize 87AC router for high design speed 1734 Mbps AC mode, & 867 Mbps AC mode that the T4U can try to get.... (Half of 867 Mbps is happiness)

On another matter: Actually, I am referring to 87AC router N mode that says "It supports three spatial streams on the 2.4GHz frequency band and delivers a maximum physical link rate of 600Mbps". Because the wifi analyzer should detect the router activated design max speed at N mode (since no AC mode was detected), but 87 router is showing either 217.6 Mbps (20 MHz) or 450 Mbps (40 MHz). I am expecting to see 600 Mbps detection by "acrylic" wifi analyzer for the router.

I will set upload/download speeds at 20 Mbps for "enable smart Qos".

I tend to agree with you: Was my T4U adapter NOT SET to connected with 87AC? The question is: First, I need to get 87AC to be SET for 5GHz broadcast, but please HOW, am I missing somethings? I will re-check T4U setup tonite and ensure T4U adapter can definately detect/function with 87AC router at 5GHz AC band width!

Sony T2/Z1 NOT detecting 5GHz & PC, notebook & PS4 Not detecting 5GHz, both N mode. T4U Not detect 5GHz both N/AC modes (but this time will re-do setup tonite for miracle).

I am appreciating your prompt response with kindness now and then. smile.gif

ASUSmy:""....You can connect one band at a time using the wifi adapter....""

Yes, I tried with no success to connect AC mode 5GHz (preferrably T4U AC mode 867 Mbps than N mode 300 Mbps.)

Then, I subserquently tried 2.4 GHz at N mode showing a practical speed was 145 Mbps (T4U design for 300 Mbps.)

AC mode high speed 1734Mbps of 87AC router is the choice, as possible. Thanks.

Note: I am planning to upload a few hundreds musical hifi CDs at highest wifi speed to WD EX2 cloud device. It would be hundreds of painful hours to accomplish the job. Time is the essence. Thanks again for your good help. smile.gif

Hi lau6311,

If it is ok with you, can you help save the log file and capture the image of the wireless log.

If can please include the setting file also and e-mail it to me. I will PM you my e-mail address.

Thank you

Hi ASUSmy, I will organize to provide the required data to you soon, so as to make it productive. Please advise the locations of the log file & setting file for my retrieval; believe that the "print screen & paste" should do the job of capturing (MS-Words), and send log/setting files to you by email. Am I right? (Sorry that I am not familiar.)

Expressing appreciation of your support. (These few days, I am experiencing frequent internet dropouts and had called Maxis, who claimed it is nation wide situation now.) Thanks.

Hi ASUSmy

Please advise HOW to CLOSE off 2.4GHz (N mode) broadcast of 87AC router, so I can try to activate only 5GHz AC mode connection. If the router & USB adapter are in good working order and setup properly, with router/adapter sitting next to each other, These devices should work and I can check max practical/design 5GHz AC mode speeds. smile.gif

Hi ASUSmy

Hi ASUSmy

I am thinking of relocating the 87AC router to upper floor, where I use the PC with T4U adapter. 87AC router will become the Access Point, after configuration (AP mode.)

Questions:
Will 87AC router broadcast 5GHz AC mode, as Technicolor is only N mode 480Mbps design?

If yes, Internet service will be by Technicolor on ground floor, can AC87 provide internet service on upper floor?

If yes, at what internet & non-internet signals DESIGN speeds of AC87 will be broadcasting?

If all are "NO", then cannot relocate 87AC router as AP?

When Asus EA-87AC will be launched in Malaysia? Hardware at Show is seen!

Thanks. smile.gif

Hi lau6311,

To off the 2.4GHz radio, you can go to Wireless -> Professional to do the setting.

Thank you

Hi ASUSmy, thanks.

I will reset the 2.4GHz radio from "YES" to "NO". Currently it is at "YES".

I noted that the 5GHz radio setting has be correctly set to "YES", means should activate 5GHz radio, when other things are in order. I will check system for consistancy of different SSID names used for each 2.4 & 5GHz. Just to be sure.

Hi ASUSmy

Without doing any resettings, the notebook can detect AC radio from 87 router, i.e. when clicking bottom right "wifi bar", without entering to router's bandwidth management software, it shows the AC radio detection under one of my SSIDname (for 5GHz).

When clicking to activate connection, it asked for 8-digit PIN password. I entered the passwords which I obtained from the bottom of the router, a message said: "Windows cannot get the setting from router".

I will investigate further (Windows setup), and if you also can offer some advice on router side.

At least, I know 87AC router is "working". smile.gif

Hi ASUSmy

An update after "play-play, set-set" with WPS, etc..The wifi analyzer can detect a working radio design 1733.4 Mbps with AC 5GHz signal, full signal strength 5-bar, notebook was working fine at sittng about 3m away from router on same level.

Detecting weak 1-3bar strength at 8 m/3 walls, sometimes dropped out, when at upper floor. sad.gif

Now it is the turn for the PC/T4U testing tonite.

Thanks to you for your good support. How about other good questions for you earlier, as applicable. smile.gif

Hi lau6311,

Yes, it will broadcast 2.4 and 5GHz together.

If you are changing the the RT-AC87U as AP, Technicolor will do the dialing. AC87U will have Internet access too.

As for the EA-AC87, not sure when it will be in Malaysia.

Thank you
*
Hi ASUSmy

To configure 87ac as the AP, please indicate clearly of all required steps and settings for success. The upper floor 87ac cannot communicate with Technicolor located on the group floor. How to commucate by wifi method without a super long impractical ethernet wire, as a way to complete the loop of a good service support. Thanks.

On the previous querry:
Why am I not detecting 600Mbps 2.4GHz N mode radio, but 450Mbps (40MHz) and 216.7Mbps (20MHz) speed, using Acrylic wifi analyzer? Is it one of the 4 antenna system is faulty? 87ac router is designed for 1734 Mbps AC + 600Mbps N, right?
