1. Can we link to another pc to play video file(in MCE)?
yes
QUOTE
2.Homebrew serial IR receiver can use in MCE?
can, but with 3rd party remote control software like Girder. BUT, the homebrew IR receiver does not have IR blaster to control STB (astro), if you are planning to use as PVR, then it's not reccomended.
QUOTE
3. Where to get the receiver?
DIY, component can buy from electronic parts shop.
here is the GUIDE

4. Can anyone expert here recommend me a TV Tuner card which support MCE with controller. Budget under rm250>rm300
Hauppauge PVR150MCE cost ~RM450.

hehe.. I have my own setup also. Ryansia can confirm. We in same boat, but I'm more of a tightwad than him when it comes to $$$. (None to throw around so all my stuffs are LOW END)

Mine also not full fledged HTPC (No PVR capability as Astro Quality SUX. FYI, my house No Astro, No TV. My Aeriel KONK already, dunno what happen, am living > 1 year like that already no issues ... brows.gif ) What for Get haugepauge when the astro sux and I don't watch anything that they show?? WAF level is High

System :
Celeron 2.0G
256MB Ram
2x320GB (~90% Full combined)
1x200GB (78% Full)
1x200GB (archived Disk, plug in via USB when needed) (100% FULL)
1x40GB (System disk)
(Still have 1x75GB 10K Sata + a few more hundreds of Gigs of disks lying around.. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif ryansia can confirm... doh.gif
1xDVD-ROM
El-cheapo motherboard
Internal LAN, Internal Sound Card
Nvidia(clone) 5200 svideo output to 21" TV
Tower Casing. (You know Silverstone casing selling for RM999 in Low Yat?? Wah Lau eh..! Besides, it cannot accomodate my near 1TB HD system.. blush.gif )
RF Keyboard (RM150)
IR Remote Control In the WORKS (for over 1 year already rclxms.gif )
OS - (Gentoo) Linux + Freevo (www.freevo.org)
Media Compatability - EVERYTHING from h.264/mov/rmvb/rm/bin/rtsp/avi/divx/xvid/dvd/vcd (one reason I don't like using Windows™ or those AIVX systems is cannot play rmvb files.(All the chinese TV Series are in RMVB leh..)

Everything FREE and LEGAL!! thumbup.gif

BTW, House is fully LAN wired. Each room as 1 Network Port except for Study room where all the connections go to.

Upstairs, in MasterRoom, I have a 22in Acer widescreen 1680x1050 stuck to the wall (but the bracket custom made to enable me to move the Acer to and from the masteroom to the study to do other "linux" stuffs") This is connected to my Laptop and driven as an external monitor.

Audio is served via a 2.1 Philips speaker wired from the ceiling.

My system is nothing to shout about, but it just goes to show what a Linux Geek like me can do/perform using Free and Open Source Software.

Heck, I can even sell this system without needing to worry about licenses and stuffs.

Next project :
Getting My Long Range (DIY) Wifi link to work. Shoot to/from my sis in law's place (who has astro) if it works, then can consider getting a Haugepauge to record shows from there. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif (using DD-WRT on LInksys WRT54G)

Okay lah.. enough selling.. (i got hot air in my head already.)

Great work myjunk. notworthy.gif I would love to use linux as well just that nowadays I don't have the time luxury to setup and configure individuals drivers for the OS.

I doubt what you watch on your HTPC is legal and free biggrin.gif tongue.gif

I'm venturing into this atm, but i seem to have a 'normal' problem here..

My rig currently equipped with a Creative Audigy 2 ZS and running digital-coax to my Creative DDTS-100, but somehow, i couldn't get Dolby Digital to work.. My DDTS keeps showing it's on Stereo..

Any idea how and where can i check? i've basically did whatever i could, SPDIF passthrough, etc etc.. and it still doesn't work.. but Dolby Digital and DTS from my Xbox360 worked wonderfully through Optical..

I played a movieDVD on my PC, selecting DTS, exactly the same setting on my Xbox360, and using my PC, it still showed Stereo meanwhile my Xbox360 showed DTS..

I've yet to re-format and installed a WinXP MCE, but i'm planning to sort this out so that when i format, i can get everything right..

Thanks in advance!! notworthy.gif

EDIT: Movie -> DVD

Try to set in your DVD player software (PowerDVD,WinDVD,etc),in speaker setting, dont select 2.1ch,5.1ch or 7.1ch..Select something like 'External Receiver', 'Optical out' or ' SPDIF out'..

Where to download the necessary codec? I owned a HTPC too recently and wondering how to play RMVB.

Will post some questions regarding my new HTPC and facing some issues on HDMI, sound and Astro.

Try googling "real alternative". I use it to play RMVB.
