Normally we say a locked set is locked to a particular carrier, only that carrier sim card can be used. But the 32GB N7 you get from Newegg is just 32GB WiFi only. There's no sim tray on this unit thus no 3G connection. So it can be locked or unlocked since it doesn't matter

Or... You can mean a locked bootloader. In this case, all Nexus 7 has a locked bootloader from factory. You need to unlock bootloader only you can flash custom recovery, root, custom rom etc.

You can hide it easily with custom rom. If you don't want custom rom, you need to edit build.prop. Of course root is needed for this. Google for more info

If you only unlock and root, yes you can straight update. But might lose root.

But... It will be no match for Nexus 7 even if $50 dolar cheaper.

$50 is definitly worth since Nexus 7 is supported by Google.
The chipset used in Nexus 7, even though seems similar to that in Ainol, that GPU unit will be a huge problem for compatibility since almost no other well known chipset is using that GPU. On the other hand, Tegra 3 is used in so many devices that most of the apps will support tegra 3 instead.

Ainol tablets also normally very hot... I don't think they'll handle this issue better than Nexus 7.

Lastly, looking at the massive support by developer community, Ainol lose out completely

However, I guess that Ainol should have a better IPS panel than the one in Nexus 7 Since the one in Nexus 7 is too easy to be beaten

I know ainol is quite reliable. But heat is also an issue, even in their single core model which my friend is using. Just use for a while without wifi it'll get hot. Use with wifi, extremely hot.
