QUOTE(FauxHawk @ Dec 19 2012, 04:35 AM) I wish the Y580 came with more space to put a second drive, so I can have both a HDD and SSD. Their option of using a small SSD isn't worth it well, you can also opt to use SSD+HDD combo by removing your ODD *eh, I can buy a mSATA SSD from outside and use as standalone dive right? First time I asked the guy, he said the 32gb SSD is only for a speed boost, not as a standalone drive Thinking of getting the Crucial M4 mSATA and yes.... mSATA can be used as standalone drive... iinm since the bios is locked, only set that originally comes with mSATA can be configured for cache purpose..... (not sure if this still true or not) |

QUOTE(storm88 @ Dec 19 2012, 01:23 PM) nope hrmm... iinm on previous y480/580 thread, got someone mentioned that the y480/580 bios locks the caching except when the mSATA really comes with the unit...any mSATA can be used as cache or standalone drive. Putting the Drive mode from ACHI to Raid will enable the caching method. imo, for the SSD solution in Y580, i recommends using mSATA instead of transfering your harddisk to caddy. Quite some customer walk into my shop buying Y580 but with their own caddy bay bought at forum. The built of the caddy directly affect the slotting which will leave out extra space that the whole caddy is quite "Koyang" Mechanical harddrive is very sensitive of vibration especially when you're working with your unit. Added on December 19, 2012, 1:24 pm you may find mSATA from my siggy Added on December 19, 2012, 1:24 pmbtw, i'm doing a full review of Local Y400 review. where should i put the thread at a? as for review, there's official review sub-forum on computer section but not sure if there's other place where you can post it... later when i get things right, i'll update the 1st page and probably can link your review later |

QUOTE(Cobby @ Dec 21 2012, 03:11 AM) Hmmm... since the SLI is using the ODD slot... i was thinking of using mSATA since il need huge space to install games n etc. oh ya... forgot bout it... guess you really have to go with mSATA...240GB 2.5" SSD seems nice, but way too expensive. So i thought of using mSATA instead and leave the 500GB as game storage. Anyone have tried using mSATA port? any idea of the Win8 score for it. well, mSATA performance should be a bit slower compared to SSD. not sure bout mSATA port in y500, but for y580 only SATA II... |

well, the best for media playback is still you install on your own filters/codec separately.... since you wont blindly install unused stuff & you actually know about it....

QUOTE(guilt79 @ Dec 23 2012, 11:33 AM) I don't wanna go Low Yat to buy anything anymore. lol...that's the unique part about lowyat plaza.... u need to have knowledge before buying stuff from there Sales people are arrogant, not helpful and stupid. I went to outlets there to look for internal Blu-Ray driver and 90% of outlets are so arrogant, I wonder who i actually the customer??? I can't believe it. 10 years ago, Sg Wang & Low Yat always known for bad service and Ah Beng outlets. Now still the same. I guess this urban myth still applies. 10 salesman there, 9 cannot be trusted. That 1 person also needs to see his mood. |

QUOTE(Jet23sky @ Dec 24 2012, 12:43 PM) hmmm.... okk Then maybe external keyboard would be the best way to keep my palm feel cool. I hope my awesome cooling pad can cool it down easily. Cause my current laptop is being cooled down quite effective by my cooling pad. well.... originally y480/580 were branded officially by lenovo as multimedia laptop, not gaming..... it is us actually who called that way etc just bcos of the specs..... I thought i7 has its idle state with less power usage. According to my research, the graphic card switching is based on the task you do and system will eventually evaluate whether it needs to use advanced graphic power or not. I don't quite like the way y580 dissipate the heat though. Unlike Y500 which has a huge ventilation at btm. Or maybe it has seperate ventilation for harddisk and graphic card. That's why they said Y580 is not considered a gaming laptop compare with Asus G series. |

QUOTE(mrl @ Dec 24 2012, 07:54 PM) looking at the temperatures, I dont even feel like OC... thinking to downclock the CPU actually... XD dunno... try run dust remover first, then start the game I think the extra exhaust will help actually... though I'm not 100% sure how the air flow going to be... perhaps Lenovo already R&D the airflow so that it won't create vortex or anything... though, I wonder if we can actually run "Dust Remover" while playing games... |

QUOTE(xyz_cityhunter @ Dec 28 2012, 07:15 PM) just now when i select the odd the path for the recovery file somehow become to C:/temp, is that normal? which recovery type you picked? based on my y580, there's 3 option...1. recovery disc with existing backup image 2. recovery disc with current system 3. factory default recovery disc normally would pick the 3rd option, then they will not ask which image file path |
