Hi, i planning to get into sg uni and taking tuition grant to support my tuition fee there. I am currently Form 5, i looking forward to biomedical engineering, biotech and petrol chemical engineering. Is there any good Uni to recommend? And where should i take my A-level if i wanted to go into sg uni? Is that getting into the uni in sg hard?

You can either do A-levels or STPM. yes, it is very competitive to get a place in these universities.

yes, it is hard. don't expect to enter top 40 universities in the world with lousy result. I guess either NUS/NTU should able to provide the course u interested. Check their respective websites. can't help on a-level....

malaysians apparently have an easier time getting in compared to the loacl students. this is what i heard from a singaporean buddy of mine. but you still need competitive results to get it, i reckon.

It depends on your major. Some majors are harder to get in, some is easier. I applied to NUS - Master in EE before ... and I got in without interviews or anything. I even submitted the app late. And my result is not like super good or something ... But if you are expecting scholarship, then of course it will be more difficult.

If you look at the work they do, most are comparable to the best Australian institutions and some even better. After all, this is one of the leading Engineering universities in Asia-Pacific.

Don't know why, most of friends and seniors prefer NTU over NUS for engineering. and p4n6, I was talking about undergraduate. Not sure of ur case which is postgraduate.

I am year 1 in chemical engineering in NUS now. Well it's really hard to get admitted but NUS prefers A-level qualification more than STPM so you might wanna take note of that. Bioengineering is hard to get in because of the small intake (ard 40 persons a year). Chemical engineering is the hardest of all engineering to get into since the competition is so great. NTU is not easy either but their bioengineering is easier to get into though. Many Malaysian made it into engineering in NUS so it is not that impossible If you want a easier entry to Singapore uni, try apply to Singapore Polytechnic and you will do your A-level there for ard 2 years. After that you will get into Singapore Uni more easily and you can skip the first year in Uni. All the best! This post has been edited by Futurisco: Mar 10 2006, 07:32 PM

I think the reason why it is higher standard because it takes much more longer to complete the degree compare to other university. You need to complete A level which is 2 years + 4 years uni which adds up to 6 years compare to australia uni which is like 1 year college + 3 years uni?

Do remember that the singaporean A-level is very different from other A-levels. So by saying that NUS prefers A-level, do you mean they prefer their own A-levels? You don't do your A-levels in a polytechnic. You get a diploma from a polytechnic. A-levels as far as I know are offered by JCs.

i think their preference to A-level is mainly due to the use of english as teaching medium. STPM is based in BM. couldnt figure out any other reasons though.

But still polytechnic does help you to get in.Although NUS did not officially announce that they prefer a-level, i drew that conclusion because with full As in STPM and A-level(from Malaysia), most of the A-level made it. Thx for correcting me

Didn't you know that there was a big hooha when mahathir pushed for a change in 2002? What made him do so was quite hilarious but I am not sure whether it's true or not. Mahathir visited the US in 2002, as usual some of his cabinet ministers followed him. During one of the socialising sessions, one of the minister was speaking to an American official, the official remarked, "I heard that the standard of english in Malaysia is deteriorating," Our lovable minister said, "Oh yes, the standard of english is going downer and downer." He answered within the earshot of mahathir, so that explains why mahathir came back and change everything back into english. This post has been edited by feynman: Mar 10 2006, 11:47 PM

My sister got into NUS with her A-Levels results. She scored 3As, but she didnt get the course she applied for. She applied for E&E, but they gave her a double degree in Physics and Math instead.
She says she's having a good time there, but the workload's a killer.
