I am year 1 in chemical engineering in NUS now. Well it's really hard to get admitted but NUS prefers A-level qualification more than STPM so you might wanna take note of that. Bioengineering is hard to get in because of the small intake (ard 40 persons a year). Chemical engineering is the hardest of all engineering to get into since the competition is so great. NTU is not easy either but their bioengineering is easier to get into though. Many Malaysian made it into engineering in NUS so it is not that impossible smile.gif
If you want a easier entry to Singapore uni, try apply to Singapore Polytechnic and you will do your A-level there for ard 2 years. After that you will get into Singapore Uni more easily and you can skip the first year in Uni. All the best!

why is it so?

Do remember that the singaporean A-level is very different from other A-levels. So by saying that NUS prefers A-level, do you mean they prefer their own A-levels?

You don't do your A-levels in a polytechnic. You get a diploma from a polytechnic. A-levels as far as I know are offered by JCs.

Oops..i think i made a mistake, still not clear abt the Singaporean education system yet. But still polytechnic does help you to get in.Although NUS did not officially announce that they prefer a-level, i drew that conclusion because with full As in STPM and A-level(from Malaysia), most of the A-level made it. Thx for correcting me biggrin.gif

lolz... i wanted to do oil and gas or petrochemical in sg uni, but does NTU offer this course? Which is harder to get in, ntu or nus?
*
Both NTU and NUS have chemical engineering. Chem engin is the hardest engin to get in because of competition. So far i have not find a person in chem engin who hav a B in any of the subjects in their A-level. Personally I prefer chem engin from NTU, more practicals orrientated than NUS. But I can't get NTU but NUS instead. Guess NTU is harder than NUS in chem engin.

NTU engineering is known for their tough workload. IN fact, companies in Singapore prefer NTU grad as they are better in practical aspects. With compulsory Industrial Attachment, most grad were offered jobs even b4 they had graduated.

From the graduate survey of batch 2005, NTU grad command an avg of $2.6K compared to NUS grad which is $2.5K

In NTU, the workload is heavy and tedious that u can always hear students from NTU failing exam but seldom from NUS.
*
yeah u r right, we NUS engin grads hav lower pay compared to NTU simply because NUS focus too much on theory while NTU goes into applications.

Do your A-levels in Msia. Doing the Singapore A-levels is suicidal. Trust me, I've been through it.

Yeah he is right

Both NTU and NUS recruit a great deal of students and teaching staff from China.

It's tough to get in because you have to compete with these Chinese powerhouses.
*
China's students are extremely good. They are the best from their country. Usually give students like us heavy load of stress. The teaching staff are good too..if u dun talk about their english that need some time to understand laugh.gif

any ntu student know are they offering oil and gas courses or petrochemical engineering? I am interested in oil and gas industry. And one of my fren wanted to get into NUS for dentistry, is it hard?
*
Dentristry, pharmacy, and medicine in NUS is crazy hard to get. 6 of my 4.0 5 subjects STPM frens applied...one get in dentistry. The hard part is the interview. For instance last year interview for dentistry, candidates are given clay and asked to shape the structure of human teeth...hmm...I guess no college teach u that in a Level unless u really luv dentistry. So ask ur fren to get more info in dentistry b4 the interview. smile.gif

Hope my replies help rclxms.gif

If you get rejected by both NTU or NUS, you could try and apply for their polytechic, when you finish at singapore poly, you might be able to try and apply for NTU/NUS again.

Anyway, even if you failed to enter their UNI, apply any poly and get their offer letter.
With that offer letter, you get to make a passport at half price ..
*
This is a good idea..easier to get in from poly. And Poly student no need do first year. A lot malaysian used this way.

QUOTE(ben3003 @ Apr 18 2006, 09:23 PM)
wow.. seem very hard to get in... so must do very well in a-level? And can provide me any course which is easier to get in a NTU or NUS? But i still prefer chemcial engineering..
*
If u talk about chemical engineering..make sure no B in ur result. It is very competitive inside here. One of the easiest course to get from NUS is Science as they accept large intake. U can get with SAM forecast result or 1 A in STPM. Very good course offered by NUS if u dun like engineering.

QUOTE(ben3003 @ Apr 18 2006, 09:32 PM)
btw, if wan apply for sg uni, i should apply before i take a level or after i got my a level result? or if i go polytechnic 1st and get my diploma, is it easier to get in compare to getting a level only?
*
Definetely A-Level from some reputable college. NUS very fussy about the qualification. Must be recognized and they strict in the quality of the result u holding. Diploma...really depends how they view the quality of the diploma.

Ur university results has nothing to do with the hostel application.
Both are mutually exclusive.
All freshmen are guaranteed a room in their first yr.
From second yrs onwards, it's based on balloting.
*
International students hav room for first 2 years for sure.

QUOTE(yagmai @ Apr 20 2006, 10:28 PM)
Singapore students usually take these routes to university

1) Primary->Secondary->Junior College (A Level 2 yrs) -> University
2) Primary->Secondary->Polytechnic (3 yrs) -> University

If a singapore student do badly for Alevel, he can either
retake A level or join polytechnic to pursue a diploma.

It's not easy to enter uni with diploma as sg uni mostly allocated their vacancies for JC students and sg unis rather offered scholarships for China and Indian students. That's why a lot of poly students in Singapore are complaining lack of vacancies for them, resulting them going for further studies overseas.

AS long you get Top 5% for diploma, it's 90% guaranteed u are able to enter sg uni.
*
Yeah that

I have a question

Is SPTM easier or difficult  than Singapore A Level?
*
I think almost the same. Singapore A-level not easy as far as I know

Which hostel are you referring to? Is it NTU?

Not bad for 2 years, my sister is staying in NUS, they only secure your accomodation for the first year, the following year is based on your performance.
*
Yep NUS..eh..thats strange. NUS gives international students 2 years of guranteed place to stay in campus. I am a first year so maybe it's a new policy.
