Oh ok, I guess I'll just focus on those in the text book for the time being, BM is the least of my worries

Do you score well in P1 ? Which question do you normally choose for Bahagian B ?

Here's a link to Bahagian A and Bahagian B karangan's by a student of Cikgu Tan , not sure if you've seen this blog :

Her essay seems to flow quite smoothly ; peribahasa's are in abundance .

I got question.

How to calculate the net force in the given picture? Does it have something to do with friction?  hmm.gif

*
Resolve the object's weight into its parallel component . Then use the value obtained and the value of frictional force to calculate the net force .

Do you commit careless mistakes in Add Maths ? I find it frustrating and hard to achieve perfection when mistakes pop up here and there .

I guess emphasis would be placed on Bahasa Melayu , Sejarah and Biology for me .

I'll practise Physics , Chemistry , Add Maths once a week --- Moral ; twice .

English and Maths , once every fortnight .

I'll be having Gerak Gempur as well so that would be extra , beneficial practice . Or that's how I'm looking at it now .

We are already very busy scrambling for past years , and racing against time to finish everything . I think it'll be better if you go to a bookshop and buy those books . sweat.gif

Oh sorry, I must have missed this post. Umm...my teacher said that all contoh must be KBKK and all penerangan must "dikaitkan dengan situasi". My class was "wiped out" in the essay part. We got our papers back today and the essay questions involved a title with a few situasi. We all gave contohs based on the situasi and well...  vmad.gif

There seems to be multiple ways to answer Moral questions. I have done exercises by my teacher and around 7 modal test(from 2 different sources) so far and all seem to have different answer scopes. doh.gif

By the way, Maxis, your teacher accepted that you used the same penerangan twice?(Ali smoking twice)
*
Because the situasi only has one example , Ali menghisap rokok . You can repeat the situasi in your KK Penerangan but never the Contoh's .

Ah ok, I should have a chat with my Moral teacher, she is confusing at times doh.gif

So, how are your preparations coming along? smile.gif
*
Pretty well , perhaps ? Constant preparation for Sejarah though . Nearly done with Biology, which is a relief , now all I have to do for the science subjects are the experiments . Need to practice more for A.M P2 , and get my butt off to read E.A as time will be running out . We'll have Negeri Sembilan Gerak Gempur next week . Ughhh . Not sure what to feel . On one hand I feel that it'll be a good practice , on another , I want to spend these weeks with my friends --- it'll be the last with them , in school .

By the way , sorry for not replying to your queries ; do you mind posting them here if you could ? After the trials results were announced , I thought I would be free for a while , but no , I had to print trial papers , share mine with friends from other schools and deal with teachers about a few things .

The GC BM will be back at our school for another session of BM Bengkel . I'll share the goodies ( scan them ) here if there are any ; if time is forgiving .

Meanwhile , are you guys 100% familiar with Sejarah ? I still am not .

My results for trials

BM-90
BI-94
Maths-96
Add Maths-92
Biology-90
Chemistry-85
Physics-84
Sejarah-97
Accounts-90
Moral-90

An overall improvement this time compared to mid-term though some subjects drop a little. This has given me more motivation for SPM. Gambateh

To get above 40, you'll need to demonstrate English proficiency similar to Americans, British or Singaporeans. It's close to impossible, unless you did what I said or come out with something extremely impressive.

No joke.
*
Wait , you're joking right ? Please tell me you're being sarcastic .

I can assure you that what you've just said doesn't apply to SPM . I'm not sure where you heard that . Even if your teacher told you that , you must've at least asked around to disprove this , because it's not true at all .

The description of criteria for Band A ( 44-50 , the highest band ) doesn't contain any points about writing like the Americans , British or Singaporeans . This is very absurd ! Furthermore there isn't an agreed rule of thumb as to how an American piece of writing compares to how a Singaporean would write an essay . English is universal , aside from slight differences between spelling and choice of words .

I've even talked to Head Examiners and read a few sample essays which have been awarded 50/50 , and they are in no way mind-blowing , nor do they display any characteristics of being an ' American ' essay . There were also occasional first draft slips and minor grammatical errors .

So I disagree with your statements completely .

QUOTE(Heartnsoul @ Sep 30 2013, 06:43 PM)
Operation definition, you'll have to read on activities in the reference books.
For inference, if it's bio, read up on reference books, if Phy and Chem, just : <responding> is influenced by <manipulated>
*
I don't quite understand what you've said about activities in reference books , and your way of answering inference for Chemistry will only garner you 1 mark out of 3 .

For Biology , the requirements for an Operational Definition changes according to the experiment . Basically , OP in Biology is the one that most students find the most difficult , even students in the 'excellent' band/category . In order to answer OP in Biology , you must know the theory , then define the theory using variables controlled/measured in an experiment . Follow that with a general statement , sort of like an idea level inference .

Example :

Photosynthesis is a process that takes place in Hydrilla sp. , in the presence of sodium hydrogen carbonate solution , placed at different distances from the light bulb , and produce gas bubbles . Rate of photosynthesis is affected by light intensity .

It's a mouthful , I know , but Biology P3 requires precise and detailed answers for full three marks . Some OP are simpler due to simple materials used , for example :

Pepsin enzyme hydrolyses albumen solution from cloudy to clear , and the rate of pepsin enzyme reaction is affected by albumen concentration .

In Chemistry , OP is simpler , but can be tricky sometimes . Keep in mind , always look at what you've done , and what you observe after doing that ( thing ) . Aside from that , you need to specify the material used , normally using the upper extreme case and also state the 'direction' . Example :

When iron nail is coiled with copper strip and immersed in test tube filled with agar solution mixed with potassium hexacyanoferrate ( III ) and phenolphthalein solution, higher/highest intensity of blue spots are formed .

In orange , what you do . In blue , what you observe . The upper extreme case is when ' copper strip ' is used [ which produces the highest intensity of blue spots ] , this depends on the experiment . The direction here is 'higher' , or 'highest' .

The example I took is a long one . But I hope people reading this will get an idea on how to answer .

A word of advice , Heartnsoul , not about you . I hope people reading this will not be offended :

While it may be tempting to offer advice , do it only when you're really sure . I'm not saying that you must stop giving advice altogether , but it'll be extremely helpful if you were to do some research before posting . I really want candidates here who are having trouble with certain aspects of SPM to get the right thing , not ' what I feel ' , or ' how I answer ' , or ' what my teacher says ' .

I don't know about most of you but I was educated in a rural school for close to 5 years [ I still am ] . These 5 years , which have proven to be challenging , have taught me the importance of doubt and attitude to strive towards the most accurate explanation . It's never good to be complacent . Always try to dig further until you've reached the end where proof is shown to you in black and white . I think this will take you far in whatever you do .

Meanwhile , don't stop sharing inputs [ but do it with caution ! wink.gif ]

On a sidenote , had BM Gerak Gempur today . Will post all the 'tajuk's or experiments that came out when I have the time .

What kind of essays do you guys usually write? Argumentative and factual one?
*
In SPM , there are 5 types :

1 . Factual
2 . Descriptive
3 . Reflective
4 . Writing a story with an opening / ending
5 . Open-ended , one word essay

I have only exclusively touched factual , but in my trials I took a huge risk , I wrote a story for the first time . It was satisfying , but not impressed with how I developed the story . I'm not sure which to choose know , maybe I'll stick with one , maybe during SPM I'll take the risk again . laugh.gif

I have read a lot of American newspaper articles , and I agree , the words they use grab your attention --- even with simple ones .

But I really think that getting 40+ requires something extremely impressive is far-fetched . Most likely your teachers were being too stringent , they wanted students to push themselves further .

The Head Examiner also quipped that he once marked essays from an all-girls school in Penang , and almost half had obtained 50/50 ! Not sure which though .

The essays I read were stories . One of them really caught my attention . It was written for the one-word essay prompt , 'WATER' [ about a Hindu god named Varuna ] . The essay was simple and sweet , not at NY Times' level , but it was fairly simple and interesting to read . The essay scored 50/50 , and was shared with all English teachers in Malaysia in the year 1997 .
