hi all, I have been using a samsung phone with gorilla glass (1st gen) for 1 year now without screen protection.
so far no scratches at all and I'm happy. I'm getting a gen2 gorilla glass phone soon (note2) and wish to know if the glass is similarly tough and scratch resistant as the original gorilla glass? Thanks

Yes.
QUOTE
How is Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2 different?
Gorilla Glass 2 can be up to 20 percent thinner than the original, but still just as tough. This exceptional thinness enables greater design possibilities for slimmer and sleeker devices with brighter images and improved touch sensitivity. Gorilla Glass 2 is elegant and lightweight, but scratch resistant and durable enough to withstand the unexpected abuses of everyday life.

on the practical side of things. i been using my galaxy 1 without protection for nearly 2 years. no problem. not a single scratch. i have a cover though

now i have s3. but i have 2 versions of casing - one with cover and one without. but no screen protection. sometimes during light outings i fix the non cover casing. so far so good. not a single scratch. the main culprit is sand. stay away from sand and u should be pretty fine.

Thanks for the replies.
So can we safely say, the new gorilla glass is better than the older gorilla glass?
Coz I'm planning to use the phone without casing, without screen protector.
I like to see the display screen to be shiny tongue.gif

not a good idea. broken gorilla glass is more common than scratch gorilla glass. casing is to prevent impact. u should worry about dropping your phone more than scratching your phone

I'm using the screen protector to lessen the smudges and finger prints. Not sure if this is ideal though.

just note to self if got hair line crack dont complaint ya because even ori set the manufacturer wont replace.

Just remember it stated clearly its scratch resistant and not scratch proof or godlike glass its your perception it is.

I seen many saying what you just said later seen hairlines crack on the screen then complaint non stop then now only put screen protector to make it less visible.

if what you said is true then the screen protector market will close down but you notice its getting more expensive and better so its the risk you are taking.

Just think from a business POI if that selling point is so good they will put scratch proof or godlike glass to boost sales but if u read the gorilla glass 2 website it only says resistant so do it at your own risk because if later if there is a scratch RM10 screen protector cant save your phone aka too late

Precaution better than cure. Perception is a very dangerous thing because it creates an illusion that u believe regardless its true or not then it leads to inception like the movie you plant misleading information regardless true or not its someone else mind based on your perception to create inception resulting believes

Thanks again for all replies. I read all of them.
I know it is a risk. I just wish to know if gorilla2 is better (or at least similar) to gorilla1.
If yes then I will use it the same way I used my old samsung.
Coz I think, if I use same way, then it will not have scratch too (unless gorilla2 is not as good as gorilla1)

On the other hand, got money to buy the phone but want to touch cheap plastics. tongue.gif

For a few past phones, I have not purchased screen protector. It always look better without one and I don't have problem with scratched screen yet.

*SP = screen protector

not touch cheap plastic, just a another protection
if all of you think gorilla glass is very good then nobody want to sell SP, all can bankrupt
yes, without the SP look the screen is nicer and better, but also depends what SP you use
use certain SP on the screen also will make the screen looks good

General public has been (mis)guided with the trend that screen protectors and casing are necessity for their mobile phones. We don't use screen protectors or casing for our device back then and they are all fine. Devices after devices that I own, without screen protector, doesn't even suffer a scratch on the screen.

I'm not generalizing that screen protector are utterly useless, there are indeed heavy duty users that require such protection. But often, if such rough handling is required, the screen protector would not be significant enough to maintain the aesthetics of the entire device.

I have tried a range of screen protectors, from RM2 unbranded to SGPs. Here are some that I observed:
- No SP will make the screen look good. It's only being worse in different levels
- Screen protectors sold few years ago are cheap and lasts way better than those sold now. Inexpensive ones today are just simply waste of time, effort and money. I see this as exploitation of screen protector demand. Boo to the manufacturers
- Whatever ultra crystal or oleophobic are just gimmick compared to the original screen

I am a paranoid gadget user; but with screen protectors, I've 'been there done that'. This isn't a command, but just my personal views. If you'd like to testify on your own will, remove the miserable plastic off your phone, the experience is just a whole lot different.

I used my Motorola Defy without SP or case for more than a year and I actually managed to get alot of scratches. My friend's HTC Incredible S have even more scratches than mine sweat.gif As someone mentioned abobe, anything harder or have the same hardness as glass WILL scratch it, and that includes the ever so common sand which sometimes manages to enter your pocket without you knowing or gets stuck to your shirt while you wipe your screen plus scratching it at the same time. Didn't use a case coz it wasn't even necessary. The Defy is built like a tank! Survived countless falls onto tarmac and i handle the phone quite roughly.

Now I'm on a HTC One X and the first day itself i quickly got myself a case and SP. Main reason for getting a case is the HOX's stupid camera lens design which protrudes out of the body by quite alot and the SP due to my previous bad experience from running a naked screen sweat.gif

so yeah, if the phone is built tough enough, I won't bother getting an SP or case laugh.gif

Hi smile.gif

over react much with the SP issue? lol...
i use a 7 inch tablet without SP for about 1 month, then finally SP are available i bought it and apply.
my SP applying skill quite good, no air bubbles at all.
i do not notice the SP existence at all, both sight and touch.

I use clear type SP, the touch feel/friction etc feels same only like original screen.
compare side by side with another same model tablet with no SP, its indistinguishable.

you talking about mate SP issit? mate type are horrible, i despise them, because they make the screen uglier.
although the touch is so much smoother, its not worth it for me. i do know many people that like mate type though, for them the touch feel is more important than sight comfort.

anyway, back on topic, if you use clear type (cheapo rm10 kind), it really doesnt affect the experience (touch feel/screen clarity) at all.

better safe than sorry, would rather spend some money to let the SP get scratch than let my screen got scratch.
