Do you mean too close or too far from the subject? I would rather crop the photo than miss things with slight longer focal length.
The 50mm 1.8D do not have rounded blades like the 35mm 1.8G. So when the 50mm 1.8D stops down a little it will show hexagonal bokeh instead of round ones. Usually G lenses have better smoother bokeh.

The shape of the bokeh also depends on number of blade in the lens. As I know, d lens mostly will have hexagon kind n g lens is round kind.
Usually when wide open even with normal blades bokeh balls would still be round to a certain extend, if not mistaken
