I`m starting stpm now,it`s hard n suffering..n i hope my 6years(2 stpm+ 4 deagree) will affect my salary later on in life..
1). I wish to ask wat course you guys took b4 ending up in petrol type work in OnG companies. Chem engineering is 1 rite?mechanical? wat bout chemical n biomolecula engineer? any other? petrol enginner is the straightest 1 bt i`m afraid we might face oil problems later on..might as well major in sumting on both petrol n non-petrol.
2). Neglect my interests(i mean i hav), any idea how much a freshie tat works in OnG earns? Lets say..offshore n office jobs..i heard ppl who work offshores in MIri earns only 2k while sum may get >5k as a freshie eventho he`s workin in the office..wat r the reasons behind this? I`m kinda $.$ face..let salary talks now..
3). I`m oso interested in stuying in S`pore(NUS/NTU) nex time, just asking, is there any OnG indutries there? i noe nth bout sg! wats the job prospect in sg(jobs related to oil)? Second plan---> local univ...by ranking for the course i wanted(chem engineer) shud be like this rite?  USM>UTM>UTP....
i need advice bout my future...sry for messy post n thz in advance...
*
1) Petroleum Engineering, then Mechanical Engineering.
2) exploration and service will get high pay as freshie
3) Local university who get recognisation in oil n gas sector, it has to be UTP. NUS/NTU no comment.

1) U missed out chem engineer..any other course related to oil?
2) How high wil he earn?
3) My god! it seems lik UTP is best place for oil educations..true? If i`m not mistaken, USM n UTM ranks on top of UTP by ranking..is UTP climbing up?
any1 here have any opinions bout stuying oil-related course n then wat happen after grad? Share plz..thz..

hunterox...
1)STPM no longer recognise as world class exam? whr u get this info frm? tel me the web..i`ll go n read..
2)Did evry1 here start yur career in OnG with a basic pay of roughly 2.5k+?
To work offshore n with tat kind of pay..not worth it..how bout alowance n bonus?
*
1) If you want to get into upstream. Petroleum/Mechanical Eng stand a higher chance compared to Chemical Eng. I'll take course that give me higher chance, bigger advantage.
2) Starting pay around or more than RM5k, if u based overseas, even more.
3) Don't narrow your "knowledge" to those ranking. Check what makes those universities qualified to be in the ranking, how many courses they offer and how many courses UTP is offering for the time being. USM has petroleum engineering available? Compare the course itself. The reputation of it.

UM is very famous of its medic faculty, u sure others are equally good as well?
UTP reputation in oil n gas industry nowadays. UTP students stand a higher a chance.
Remember, I said stand a higher chance not "100% advantage" other local universities.

Reputation, higher chance. Does that consider as concrete reason?
You may not know it well now when it come to industrial internship opportunity and university career fair, you will know by then.

mikhail, Christine85 not working offshore, life can be "easier" while getting the same high pay tongue.gif

Vicgray, good luck n all the best smile.gif

Thz thz alot for sharing..vry valuable info..i never noe geophysics is so interesting..lol vry good elaboration..thz thz again..

Wat bout mechanical or petrol as well as chem engineers get involved into office jobs lik geophysics does? any ideas or experience?
*
Chem Engineer, office job = Process Department
Mechanical Engineer, office job = Mechanical, Mechanical/Piping, Pipelines Department
This for job scope in oil n gas consultant firm.

Petroleum Engineering no idea, don't meet a lot people from this discipline.
Met a UTM Petro Eng grad, she was working Pipeline Integrity Management, now in Pipelines department (consultant firm).

UTP Petro Eng is more to geoscience, well design, drilling. Just check the subjects offer will provide u a clearer picture.

I applied for internship with CGPA of 3.56 but was rejected without interview either! My friend got it tho....but he din pass interview. And now I can't apply again, sheesh! Have to wait 12 months and by then my internship is over liao
*
CGPA isn't everything.

Eg for Shell, they taking people based on CART principle
Capacity, Achievement, Relationship skills, and Technical skills.
Do you have all the them?
If so, maybe there are people outside better than you are ?

There're a lot companies out there, keep trying.

i had a senior who breached petronas's contract to join shell and he has to pay 100k over a fortnight. so go figure.
*
That doesn't mean anything.
Shell is surely a better company compared to Petronas (as most people said) but still depend on the job prospect, the position in the company etc.

Working in operating company. Prospect?
Working in consultant. Prospect?
Working in installation company. Prospect?
Working in service company. Prospect?

Thus, its very hard to a conclusion just based on an example.
MAybe the UTP senior love Shell so much? where his gf/wife there?

To some people, 100k isn't a big amount.
Some petronas scholar I know in UTP, their father damn rich !!!

Schlumberger IT, they offer high pay.
They moving their office to Rohas Perkasa soon.

With recent oil price hike, working at oil related companies seems to be sooooo gooooood....!!!

Number of projects are lesser nowadays, fresh grad harder to find jobs, economic recession ? rclxub.gif

i am fresh grad from local uni, with first class, and i get an offer from a oil and gas consultancy firm, they pay me RM2k, am i underpaid?and how is the prospect?may i noe more about this field?can every1 tell me, and what the difference between consultancy and industrial?thanks
*
Well it a bit on low side if you ask me but that will be the range.
I remember Technip paying RM2.6k for freshie, RWP around RM2.4k

Well some people said that its good to work in consultant at young age, at least your brain still very "active". You should be absorb faster compared when u are 40-year-old.

Of my knowledge, the project flow usually

Feasibility Study > Conceptual Design > Detailed Design > Procurement > Fabrication > Installation > Hook Up n Commissioning > Drilling Production.
And there are integrity management too.

Just understand the flow, you may get to know better where u want to join.
To me, prospect always there.
Low pay locally? Work overseas like our forumers here. smile.gif

Comat, u in Aker Solutions PKFZ now?

For me.my opinion is,

fresh grad better start with vendor/fabricator/skid fabricator so they will have the site experience, coz in consultant it's very rare to go to site, unless you have 10 years exp, they will send during commissioning. However not all the consultant like that,RNZ and MMC I believe they do sent their young engineer to site.

I'm base at Menara HLA-Aker Engineering division,we are consultant.
*
Well there always option to go into installation/fabrication after years in consultant to obtain the site experience.

Well, that what my HOD told me as he took a pay cut to join one of the installation company out there.
From his opinion, do not spend more than 2 years in installation sector. Else it will be routine work after that.

And yes, he's a consultant now. Was in consultancy/installation/clients.

Just be yourself.

*
They did joined the oil n gas exhibition in KLCC on March 2008.
They have expertise in deepwater system design, I assume they have great capability in deepwater pipeline.

Met a senior engineer and the HR Manager there.
The HR Manager said they only took 3 engineers on the previous "intake". They do send engineers for training at London.
They looking for high CGPA scorer sweat.gif

why do u guys so interested with OnG? some dude claim dat he only paid rm2100 as starting in small OnG company. Or just dat dude underpaid ?
*
Starting pay isn't everything.

The prospect and the salary after few years will be the "thing" people chasing for.

Low starting pay but with 5 digit salary with around 10 years experience?
RM3k starting pay and stuck at RM5k with several years of experience?

fatimberlake, are you talking about Dialog at Labuan. I have a friend did her semester break part time job there before, maybe you can ask her. AFAIK, it also a servicing company.

de_sengal, OAG?
I remember it is an offshore pipeline design company, located at Wisma Central, beside KLCC. Considering not many offshore flexible pipeline design consultant in Malaysia, it maybe a good place to learn before going elsewhere.
Benefit wise, can't help you on that.

Hi...Is there anyone working in Technip and Ranhill?

Are they still recruiting graduate engineer (chemical Engineering)?

I called to Technip HR and they asked me to email...
After screening my email, she asked me to apply after graduate with full transcript as evidence of CGPA result...

Does it mean that I hav chance to apply and get a post there/?
*
How about Ranhill? Did they reply you?

The process team there is big, as long as they have enough projects on hand, they will recruit.
Especially those who did the internship there before.
