I didn't try to change anyone. Right now I am using a dumb phone (Nokia old style that can last 1000 years) while eyeing around for a replacement. So I am now also looking at Android or back to IOS. Pls advice what i should get...
Another small issue which I found recently, which is the audio quality. I don't listen to mp3 that much, but when I do, I appreciate great sounding device with earphone. And I just found that pureview 808 was supposed to have great sound ! With proper apps, my wife's 808 can also play flac files in full. So we have been transferring some flac files into her microSD card memory for occasional listening pleasure.
question: Can android play flac files ? I am not so sure about windows phone as I haven't tried to look for solution, this is partly because 1020 does not come with microSD slot, so didn't want to use up the memory for this.
Have you tried Android phones? From your description, seems you're not into customization and flexibility and freedom to send files, browse your file system, multi-tasking (with Samsung phones, you have multi-window; With Galaxy Note, you can have Pen Window, you can have many Pen Window, this Pen Window is resizable and can be minimized, so you can do multiple things in 1 screen).
True Multi-Tasking is one feature I look forward to. Nokia N900 does this very well and I loved it. Using the N900, it feels like carrying a miniature sized netbook at the size of a handphone, you can do many things with it.
If you're looking for such devices, at the moment, only Android fit the bill.
However, from your description, seems you're not looking for these things, but more of a basic smartphone function and basic apps, and seems you're satisfied with Windows Phone.
Actually, when I was using N900, there is no WhatsApp and many apps were not available on Maemo OS platform (but we have integrated Facebook Chat, Skype, etc into our core messaging itself, no need to install extra apps. So, I would say, during that time, I don't really bother about those apps, but once I switch to Android and start to use those apps, it become "part" of the important apps to have. Game is optional, but nice to have.
Anyway, if you're used to iOS, you can try XiaoMi Android devices, and the price is also very cheap... and quality is good, even the lowest end model. The UI is very much look and feel like iOS, even the open-apps pop up is exactly like iOS but more function where you can clear all apps, or lock certain apps from being cleared, etc.
The phones by XiaoMi is really worth the money, it maybe from China, but the quality of the device is actually very good. The reason they're cheap is because they don't spend on marketing, they don't have dealers (customer buy direct from them, phone are shipped direct from the factory itself). Unlike other brand like say iPhone 5S, the cost of the phone is less than USD200, but customer's are paying USD640 for it due to all other "cost" which mostly does not benefit the customers.
Last I tried, Android can't play FLAC files. I'm not sure whether there're any 3rd party players available which can play FLAC files. There is VLC but it's still in Beta version if I'm not wrong.
Looking into future, I'm not sure how and where Windows Phone OS will stand. How many other manufacturer's will provide Windows Phone options, in terms of phone, tablets and other devices?
iOS and Android is moving into cars and other devices. I foresee more future with Android due to it's more flexible and open, and the users are gaining more and more.
Do you have kids? Many kids now have tablets, the apps can all be shared if under same account (they should do family account). There is educational apps, educational games, song books, story books, nursery rhymes, etc. many learning apps for kids.
If someone invest in Windows Phone, in future if they want to change to Android, they will be loosing all the previous purchases.
Moreover, if you also purchase Android TV, those that you purchase, you can play those educational videos, books, music, nursery rhymes, etc on TV itself for the kids.
Of course, that is good for those who actually invest and purchase apps or in-app-purchase.
