The last Nokia adv in TV i can rmb is Nokia N8.. That's all about it.

IMHO everything is good on 1020 EXCEPT window OS.

Not a fan of WP, but as current version of Symbian on 808. WP will be a better choice, with proper tethering capability, apps, and other features.

I am satisfy with the 41MP on my 808, I can live with it since i not into those app. For those who dun own 808 might go for 1020, for their additional so call "features" which is marketing gimmick. OIS or not, i got steady hand, so yeah.  smile.gif
*
808 is good enough, but I'm not able to share my internet connection to other Android devices. I don't really mind the apps as it's not my primary phones, but for those who use it as primary phones and actively using those apps (e.g. Android or iOS users), it'll be hard to switch to 808PV, but easier to switch to Lumia 1020.

As for OIS, not a necessity but nice to have regardless, useful when shooting still objects. Although I usually shoot moving subjects, but still OIS does come in handy.

Depending on the user, there're many people who love shooting food, toys, etc indoors, so the OIS will be great benefit to them. Having that said, OIS is a feature that other manufacturer easily catch up, even now there're other competitors offering OIS. The uniqueness is mainly the 41MP sensor +sensor size and the lens.

Finally, there is camera app for WP which allows manual controls...
Oh and... 808 has poor focusing, sometimes it just won't focus even you're > 15cm away, quite annoying. With the S3, I can easily focus. Hope they will fix this problem in 1020.

QUOTE(peter32 @ Jul 12 2013, 03:13 PM)
I guess the image quality will not be that far off between 808 vs 1020.  Image stabilisation is important, which in this case, applied BOTH in video mode and picture mode.  808 has its own image stabilisation too, but only in video mode.

Sound quality for 808 is superb for handphone, but honestly, though ideal in noisy environment, it does not beat the like of dedicated camcorder.  I knew because I have an old SD JVC camcorder which has very good sound recording capacity.  I hope 1020 improve its sound recording further.

And 1020 do make phone call, whatsapps, facebook, cloud computing, map, send files to flickr (i hope) etc... really.  What else do one need ? Games?

Btw, my kids dropped my wife's 808 countless time (with plastic protective cover), and it still runs till this day.  Nokia product quality is beyond doubt I think.
*
For video, OIS may cause "jelly effect". So need to understand and still maintain steady hands. Should not be compromise or taken for granted for having OIS.

Yes, sound is superb, but should not compared to camcorder. Comparing with any smartphones, the 808 sound recording is incomparable, too much noticable difference, not "slightly difference" but one that you can tell right away even for many people. And the sound output from 808 is also great.

As for drop, the 808 is tougher than 1020. I own N9 and used to own L800, it's not as tough as 808, dropping those will surely cause dent or damage, but 808 is tougher (but heavy). Nonetheless, it also depends how it's dropped.

QUOTE(peter32 @ Jul 12 2013, 04:26 PM)
According to pureviewclub personal hand-on comparison, here's notable difference betw 808 & 1020:

1. 1020 actually has slightly smaller sensor size than 808.
2. F2.2 for 1020, F2.4 for 808
3. 1020 has BSI sensor for better low light imaging, and RGB sensor for better white balance.  808 has none of above.
4. 1020 has optical image stabiliser as earlier we mentioned.
5. xenon flash also for 1020, but slightly smaller than 808's.
6. 1020 comes with better software to control the camera features.
7. NO 'Bracketing', 'interval shot', or 'Timer' features ?  ( I guess we need confirmation on that.)
8. PHotos to shoot at Either 5MP or 34MP, no more 8MP pureview mode, which I used the most.
9. NO saving in Raw Format !
10. 6x zoom in 360p video format, 4x zoom in fullHD format.
11. 1020 has lower minimal focusing distance than 808 it seems, but no details of how close it is.
12. 1020 has mechanical shutter.
*
There's something extra, when you shot in PureView Mode, it also save the full resolution image together. Usually with 808, I will take a full resolution and a PureView mode sample, with the 1020, just keep in PureView mode and you will get both sample.

Hope there's higher FPS for video, then can do slow-mo video. HTC One has it.

1020 comes with camera app which allows manual/advances controls, which is what I wanted for the 808 since the beginning and people been requesting it.

Is "jelly effect" contribute to distort image? Correct me if i am wrong.

What the point to have well focus picture but the image is distorted?

Unless there's option to activate & deactivate OIS, no?
*
Something like that, but usually it happens more on video due to the "OIS" being taken for granted. Without OIS, normally the user will try their best to stabilize their hand and movement, pan slowly. But with OIS, the user tends to "take for granted" thinking that the OIS will solve the shake, etc, but it will cause the "Jello Effect"

The correct word should be "Jello Effect" or in another word, Rolling Shutter. In video, you will see it, the "jelly like effect" or "wobbling". If you try to "stabilize" a shaky video using software processing, you will notice this effect if you apply more harsh stabilization (or shake reduction).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_shutter

They should allow user to turn off the OIS, but need those Lumia PureView with OIS users to confirm.

EDIT:
Off Topic: Your siggy eye-scroll, dammmm funny!!! This is also what happen when I see my friend testing it, somehow the head will also move, hahahah and the eye will like want to pop-out cause trying to concentrate, it's damm funny.

Fix at higher ISO so it will try to use faster shutter speed most of the time.

Another thing is, 808PV has minimal processing, it's more toward natural color, unlike others which tends to boost more contrast and saturation, which makes the image look nicer. So if people just look basic and plainly at the image may feel 808PV output image not so nice.
The key point is, you have more flexibility of enhancing the image that is less process or mildly processed; but then to most people then don't only see the "surface" of things, not everyone will check out the details, and so on.

Anyhow, i still love the lowlight and indoor shot for 808, better than any phone out there, very minimal noise. But u need steady hand lar.  brows.gif  brows.gif  Talk about natural color, 808 really did a very good job, not like other using post processing to boost the image.
*
Yup, even have noise, is not really big issue unless you want to view 1:1 or do heavy crop. For normal viewing, it's better than any other cameraphone, even digital camera. Plus, the noise is also there to maintain the details.

For those who are really particular about noise, can apply different type Noise Reduction via software, but this will in return causes the image to loose details. More strong noise reduction may make the image look like water color or painting.
The point is, if by default the camera apply strong noise reduction, then you can not get back the details again. But, if by default it is minimal noise reduction, you can choose to apply additional noise reduction.
Nokia should have just provide "noise reduction" option in the menu, so those users who lazy to edit, or prefer to apply more noise reduction by default can choose the option.

QUOTE(ulwan25 @ Jul 25 2013, 01:09 PM)
most minimal processing like, EVAH!  drool.gif  drool.gif  drool.gif

after 808, Nokia pushed high image processing. I don't like it  shakehead.gif

you can't edit into nicer color/tones. you don't feel its natural at all  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif
*
Yup, once it's processed, it's like cooked meat, you can't un-cook it. But if it's mild-ly cook meat, you can further cook it to your taste... or add your own flavorings.
OR, another way to put it for color, imagine your coffee, you prefer it no-sugar, or 1 spoon of sugar or more, etc.

A mildly process image is always better.

But these is already color-options provided in 808. User can choose other color-profiles to get those more vivid looks, even there is saturation boost, perhaps it should also provide vibrance control.

Anyway, the point for 1020 is, they should provide options for natural color or minimal processing like 808.

QUOTE(peter32 @ Jul 25 2013, 01:59 PM)
Apparently one recent article mentioned that this 1020 will have higher colour saturation than the pv808, its partly due to the fact that the strong advocate for natural coloration guy- Damian Dinning, left Nokia and has no say in pushing for natural tone as default.

So prepare for colour boost in the 1020.
*
They can boost for default profile if they want, but they should provide options for natural color or minimal processing like 808.
Wonder why they didn't think of this but answer the questions like users have no choice but to accept what their research findings.

for the sole purpose of camera, yes, the 808 is still the best cameraphone in this planet. even though lumia 1020 has the latest specs but when compared side by side, the 808's camera still outclasses the 1020.
*
L1020 too pricey and there's only limited 32GB storage, and not really latest spec, still way behind yet asking so much. There's rumor of the replacement for L1020 already.

Moreover, there're quite a number or people selling it. If just for the camera, one can get 808 at much much cheaper price and spend the rest of the money on a better smartphone (if one doesn't mind carrying 2 device) and also save on the primary phone battery.

ya sometime the yellow tint is quite disturbing.but the 1020 amoled is not really bright since im used to ips screen(iphone,920).plus the saturation of the white color is not that good.and 1020 is damn thick  shocking.gif  but lighter than the 920.but seriously the camera bump at the back is really uncomfortable.. smile.gif However there is still something special abt the 1020 though.  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Special? I'm not sure, 1520 seems better except the camera, 1520 have high megapixel too, more than enough for general use. 1020 is way overpriced, too low on storage, no sd card option, not enough battery power. I'm waiting for the price to drop; at such price, it's just too unreasonable/unjustified, but seems Nokia/Microsoft wants to keep this device exclusive, which is unlike Nokia, so more likely Microsoft?

Then again, if you can wait... there're rumors on the 1020 successor... This should be much better I hope, with more battery, bigger storage and possible external storage (sd card), etc.

For those that don't have 808 and they're WP users, getting 1020 would be the better option.
But the specs and pricing, and the latest 1520, well... it's just doesn't justify or sound reasonable as the price for L1020 still sky high.

Well, anyway, there's nothing wrong to get it. As long the person appreciates it and willing to pay for it. Just enjoy it and don't look back.

QUOTE(ulwan25 @ Mar 9 2014, 09:32 PM)
Based on what I saw on RAW images (L1020) I'd say 808PV full 38mp resolution jpeg shots have no post-processing whatsoever (but I do see some deepen color shots that's why blue became too blue) because it is practically the same as RAW shots by L1020.

With RAW shots, I can see more bokeh than the post-processed images by L1020. In terms of usability, L1020 is the new king because it can handle any sort of light condition shots while 808PV still have problems for purple tint/ISO noises. But I can reassure you Lumia 1020 sound recording is not the best even L920 perform better.
*
the blue might be due to white balance. With RAW, you can adjust them easily, while JPEG is processed and not much room for adjustment.

From the samples in L1020 thread, can clearly see the colors are too vibrant/punchy leading to unnatural colors, but people tend to like it because it sort of "pops".
L1020 with manual controls alone would already promoted it's usability factors, as a plus, the OIS.
The only issue is the "price", the phone spec isn't really good, there's limited storage available and no external storage options. Having such high megapixel camera and HD video capabilities, which purpose for photos and videos, lacking storage is a big factor, not to mention some limitation of WP in terms of files management.

Hope to see the L1020 replacement soon with most of the things improved, and priced competitively (especially since the Find 7 is now offering 50MP)

You don't see the true capabilities of L1020 here. What you just saw is a processed jpeg images of L1020. Have you ever see its raw images? I'd say it's better than 808PV could do (even the image sensor is bigger). I'd say 808PV cannot shot well on low light. It still have the ISO problems which isn't pleasant on my eyes while L1020 shots are great. Any conditions. period.

the only thing is that you need to save that RAW format which is sucks for me. I'd rather Nokia didn't apply any of the post-processing like N8 and 808PV then save it to jpeg format would have been nice. Peace  tongue.gif
*
Of course RAW is better. I usually shoot RAW because RAW provides a lots of room for adjustment and flexibility.

but then again RAW is messy and a big burden. Too sizey and kinda slow to process. Heard of a new jpeg scheme that works like RAW but with minimal of filesize and I'm looking forward to it  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Yes, and it needs to be processed.
Anyway, JPEG with minimal processing is good enough, but it will need some processing for different situations due to the minimal processing done.
That's why for DSLR, there is an advice for settings all adjustment to lowest/zero for JPEG.
JPEG is a processed file, think of it as cooked meat, if over-cook, then you can't really do much, but if mildly cook, then you can cook it further to your preference.

Then again, not everyone wants to always edit a photo, so a default processing has to be good and suits most people. I guess L1020 adopted more vibrant/contrasty processing on the JPEG was due to more people seems to prefer it. They have to follow the market majority, e.g. when people took a photo with the demo unit, "wow, it's so beautiful and colorful".
But as long there is option to adjust the settings and RAW option as a plus, it's very good already. Plus, the manual control is one of the main highlights.

The main issue with L1020 is the price, but then for those can afford or feels it's worth it, then go for it.
Another lacking is the storage options, for the price, if it's 64GB it's more worth it, but it's better to have external storage options; being a camera focus device, the user may use up many of the space.... Actually the external grip should comes with battery + storage. tongue.gif

Looking forward for the successor for L1020. thumbup.gif

sifu, too expensive already and only 32GB and no external storage (somemore so expensive). Lumia 1520 cheaper and better spec, just lacking 41MP sensor.
Since already got 808, better wait for L1020 successor. If don't have 808, then maybe will highly consider L1020.

For now, wP 1020 seems to be a better choice, due to its OIS built-in.  808 has no OIS as yet.

Unless you don't mind lesser pixel photo, then Android comes in.
*
But L1020 is way over-priced (especially now), and too little storage with no external memory option unlike newer Lumia Phones.
If getting solely for the Camera, then yes, L1020 is good, but price wise, functionality, flexibility and other apps/services wise, Android is still a better choice and the camera is good enough with many choices available.
Beside if you plan to invest on apps, it's better to invest on platform which is more likely be here to stay and you will stay. Another benefit is, when you bought an app/game, you can install it across multiple devices, smartphones, tablets, Android TV.
You can buy a good Android TV box range from RM200~RM500, which not only for watching movies, you can browse the web, install games, connect gamepad, etc.

QUOTE(peter32 @ Aug 13 2014, 07:29 PM)
I beg to differ a bit.

So far I have come across both devices.  Lumia 1020 and pureview 808.  Unfortunately my 1020 just fell straight into a monsoon drain 2 days ago, rendered it gone case.  Thats a separate story.  But I do learn a few things throughout all these time about these windows phone thingy:

1. For window phone OS, one can also install apps and reinstall into window devices once you bought a new phone.  I haven't tried installing same apps into multiple device as yet.  From the day I lost my phone in a drain, I learnt that from the same online page, its very easy to trace the phone, delete or lock the phone.  Everything can be done through the webpage itself.

2. When I have an iphone, I had about 10 apps or slightly more. For window phones, I have at least 20+.  about 10 of which are the Nokia own apps especially for the camera functions.  It was superb to say the least. I don't play games that much, not even the angry birds, or lots of those free higher end race games etc.. I work, and need to access Gmails a lot.  Just like the IOS email original apps, I prefer the windows phone email apps than metromail for Gmail etc. Not the mention reading the shared documents at the Office Apps at the window phone.

3. Map for windows - I think nothing beats a Map service which can access offline.  I have tried to trace ourselve right in the middle of the boat ride to Phuket.  Its there too.  Amazing.

4. Finally, do not invests in an apps. Most apps are cheap to purchase, at times its about, what, RM5 per software ? Its next to nothing.  I bought a Mapping software during my IOS time (iphone 5) cost me RM80 or something like that.  Now I can get all that for free.  Other softwares are very easy to get.  I recently got that 25 Sterling Pound special gift Microsoft credit, which helped me to try some weird apps, which I delete after trying.  But kept some really good ones.  Effectively made the experience worthwhile.

All in all, the lumia phone easily satisfy most user.  If you are really into camera which needs to get some work done like the above, 1020 is really hard to beat.

My complaints for the 1020 are:

1. Battery life
2. easily cracked screen ( I cracked mine too), so do invest in some good rubbery phone cover to prevent slips.  You have my words on it.  I was thinking of changing the screen myself, waiting for a few repair items to come by.  But manage to drop my phone into monsoon drain before changing the screen.  Too bad.
*
Wanted to reply for each point, but I think no point.
Each person have their preference for a platform. What you mentioned above seems to be more towards your preference. (e.g. apps/games, and how you use).

Generally, Android is a better choice for most people and has more future.
How many Windows devices are available currently? Android there is so many types and each types there is many choices to choose from. Even phone itself, you have so many choices in terms of brand, design and each brand gives their own look-and-feel through their customization. If you have used XiaoMi, it has the look-and-feel like iOS, it's simple like iOS yet flexible and more capable like Android.

As regard to "lumia phone easily satisfy most user", I think this is a big statement, LoL. I believe many people will disagree. Just look at the users of Windows Phone, and you can do a search, many people switch away from Windows Phone after they used it. Many of us were there during the early stages when Nokia is adopting Windows Phone OS.

Some of us used to try to convince people to switch to Windows Phone, even up to the extend of letting them try and use it for few days.
Not to mention recommend people to switch/use. Most of the existing smartphone users didn't really like it.
You can also see many Symbian owners didn't like Windows Phone.
What's the reason for the downfall of Nokia and how did Samsung rise to the TOP? Obviously, most the users are from Nokia. If Nokia had Android devices, they might still be No. 1. But somehow, the ex-CEO (which was from MS), didn't allow Nokia to use Android, Windows Phone only. While Samsung/HTC can have both Android and Windows Phone. When Nokia went down, MS bought over Nokia, the ex-CEO went back to MS, and suddenly, we have Nokia X. Wow, bravo... well played....

Another small issue which I found recently, which is the audio quality.  I don't listen to mp3 that much, but when I do, I appreciate great sounding device with earphone.  And I just found that pureview 808 was supposed to have great sound !  With proper apps, my wife's 808 can also play flac files in full.  So we have been transferring some flac files into her microSD card memory for occasional listening pleasure.

question: Can android play flac files ?  I am not so sure about windows phone as I haven't tried to look for solution, this is partly because 1020 does not come with microSD slot, so didn't want to use up the memory for this.

Have you tried Android phones? From your description, seems you're not into customization and flexibility and freedom to send files, browse your file system, multi-tasking (with Samsung phones, you have multi-window; With Galaxy Note, you can have Pen Window, you can have many Pen Window, this Pen Window is resizable and can be minimized, so you can do multiple things in 1 screen).
True Multi-Tasking is one feature I look forward to. Nokia N900 does this very well and I loved it. Using the N900, it feels like carrying a miniature sized netbook at the size of a handphone, you can do many things with it.
If you're looking for such devices, at the moment, only Android fit the bill.

However, from your description, seems you're not looking for these things, but more of a basic smartphone function and basic apps, and seems you're satisfied with Windows Phone.
Actually, when I was using N900, there is no WhatsApp and many apps were not available on Maemo OS platform (but we have integrated Facebook Chat, Skype, etc into our core messaging itself, no need to install extra apps. So, I would say, during that time, I don't really bother about those apps, but once I switch to Android and start to use those apps, it become "part" of the important apps to have. Game is optional, but nice to have.

Anyway, if you're used to iOS, you can try XiaoMi Android devices, and the price is also very cheap... and quality is good, even the lowest end model. The UI is very much look and feel like iOS, even the open-apps pop up is exactly like iOS but more function where you can clear all apps, or lock certain apps from being cleared, etc.
The phones by XiaoMi is really worth the money, it maybe from China, but the quality of the device is actually very good. The reason they're cheap is because they don't spend on marketing, they don't have dealers (customer buy direct from them, phone are shipped direct from the factory itself). Unlike other brand like say iPhone 5S, the cost of the phone is less than USD200, but customer's are paying USD640 for it due to all other "cost" which mostly does not benefit the customers.

Last I tried, Android can't play FLAC files. I'm not sure whether there're any 3rd party players available which can play FLAC files. There is VLC but it's still in Beta version if I'm not wrong.

Looking into future, I'm not sure how and where Windows Phone OS will stand. How many other manufacturer's will provide Windows Phone options, in terms of phone, tablets and other devices?
iOS and Android is moving into cars and other devices. I foresee more future with Android due to it's more flexible and open, and the users are gaining more and more.
Do you have kids? Many kids now have tablets, the apps can all be shared if under same account (they should do family account). There is educational apps, educational games, song books, story books, nursery rhymes, etc. many learning apps for kids.
If someone invest in Windows Phone, in future if they want to change to Android, they will be loosing all the previous purchases.
Moreover, if you also purchase Android TV, those that you purchase, you can play those educational videos, books, music, nursery rhymes, etc on TV itself for the kids.
Of course, that is good for those who actually invest and purchase apps or in-app-purchase.
