2. able to run smoothly in PS & Lightroom

Hi guys.. need some advice here..
So after much considerations..
I've shortlisted a few options for my new laptop.

Going to get one during tomorrow's Melaka PIKOM Pc Fair
Which one do u guys recommend?

Thanks  notworthy.gif

Dell has better GPU at lower price.
At pc fair, make sure you get good deal (discount from list price). Otherwise, for Dell, you might as well buy online and negotiate for discount (also easier to extend warranty).

i see.. what about the build?
why i always hear people saying Toshiba is more durable and Dell always get burned..
how true is this?

The short answer is: Warranty service support. The 14R SE, even if you extend warranty to 3 years, only cost RM2.3k list price. If you have any hardware problem, Dell come to your house to fix it within couple of days after you call. What's more do you want? laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Saw this in other website. good deal? or any other things that i need to check?
http://www.mudah.my/Dell+XPS+13+UlTRABOOK+...SD-17109004.htm

Dell XPS 13 at RM2,750. Normal price @ RM3,299 right?
*
The model in the link is equipped with i5-2xxxM & HD3000. That is sandy bridge CPU and IGPU, which is previous generation. Bluetooth 3.
Current XPS 13 is equipped with i5-3317U & HD4000 ivy bridge CPU & IGPU. It is more power efficient, and has better graphic performance. Bluetooth 4.
So you are paying ~RM550 less for an older spec machine with worse battery performance and most probably old stock as well (since the current gen XPS13 has been in the market for some time).

QUOTE(nabzblitz @ Dec 11 2012, 03:53 AM)
can anyone tell me where i can get Lenovo Y480? can't seem to find it anywhere but this thread, wanna compare prices.
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2349017/all

are there any other laptops comparable? i need:
14' size,
3rd gen either core i5 or i7,
decent gpu for gaming (casual, for games like Dota2, HoN)
at least 4gb ram,
at least 3 USB ports, with at least 2 being USB 3.0,
good webcam,
budget between rm1.5-2.5k. (preferably closer to the 2k mark)

also considering Dell Inspiron 14R, 7420.

thanks!
*
QUOTE(nabzblitz @ Dec 13 2012, 09:16 PM)
WELL it's out of my price range. Hahaha guess I'll stick to the Y480. Also I read that it only has 3 hours of battery life and it's quite heavy, and that's gonna be a problem for me because I'll be bringing it to classes.
Thanks for the help!
*
Ehh, you did not mention that bit about "bringing it to class" sweat.gif
You will need some form of "ultrabook" to get decent battery performance.
Y480 may not be ideal. It's not exactly light (at 2.4kg+), and the i7 quad core drain battery fast.

Maybe you should look at these as well:
Asus
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
S46CM-WX023V, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2399[2kg], 4GB, W7HP

Dell
Inspiron 14z, i5-3317U + AMD HD7570M + 32GB SSD + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2599[1.87kg], 4GB, W7HP/W8 *no VGA port, OD

HP
Envy4-1043TX/1053TX, i5-3317U + AMD HD7670M + [32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)]@RM2599[Beats][1.75kg], 4GB, W7HP

The i5 ULV is money power saving, and the GPU still let you play your game decently.

for documenting and word purpose,

any reviews new hp dm1z?

thanks guys biggrin.gif

Can consider these:
11.6"
Asus
VivoBook X200E-CT009H, i3-3217U + Intel UMA + (1366x768; touch)@RM1599[1.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W8
VivoBook X200E-CT006H, B987 + Intel UMA + (1366x768; touch)@RM1499[1.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W8

HP
Dm1-4210AU, AMD E1-1200 + AMD HD7310M@RM1399, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HP

Sony
Vaio SVE11115EGB, AMD E2-1800 + AMD HD7340M@RM1499[1.5kg], 2GB, 320GB(5400rpm), W7HB

Samsung
NP305U1A, E-450 + AMD HD6320M@RM1399, 2GB, 500GB, W7S (slightly older CPU, but the screen is matte)

I am not sure if HP has bring dm1 with AMD E2-1800 into Malaysia.
Have use dm1 for extend period of time. The keyboard is decent enough for typing long documents, especially like the large Enter & Backspace key laugh.gif Could get a bit warm though.

Why don't you buy directly from Dell online? You do know the price is negotiable? Just online chat with as many sales agents as you can to get the best deal. Sure within your budget.

If the box is fully sealed and not open, yes you can read from the box.

All the HD Y580 new units being sold now in the market is not from Lenovo Malaysia, but grey import units brought in by resellers.

There are ultrabooks that come only with Intel HD 4000, and there are "ultrabook" that has discrete Nvidia GPU. The battery performance of laptop will suffer as and when the discrete GPU kick in.

Hi... I'm confused abt these...

If I change the HDD to SSD, which the panel will be opened, will this consider as breaking the warranty?

I see many people add their RAM to more GB, that will need to open the panel to insert the RAM too. So, that is also consider as breaking the warranty?

Thank you...
*
Brands put "stickers" on important components. Basically this will help their technician to see if users has tinkled with the hardware.
So if user break the "seal / sticker", warranty is void. So the important thing is if user want to do any DIY upgrade, make sure don't break the "seal / sticker" all over the place smile.gif
Fortunately, most brands don't put stickers on RAM slot or HDD place. Nevertheless, proceed with caution, and you should be fine laugh.gif A lot of re-sellers will help too.

Screen size: 13.3" or 14"
Preferred laptop: What I need is real Portability! Because I do always on outdoor/travel all the time so I need some light weight & long battery life. I have some choice on my list but need some suggestion from Sifus around here!
a) LENOVO U310 I3-3217 4GB 320GB INTEL 13.3" W7HB PINK, BLUE & GREY
b) ASUS U32U-RX024V E450 2GB 500GB ATI 13.3" W7HP 10 HOURS BATT
c) ASUS K46CM-WX060V B987 2GB 500GB NVIDIA 2GB 14" W7HP SLIM
d) SAMSUNG NP535U3C-A01 A6-4455M 4GB 500GB ATI 13'3" W7HP ULTRATHIN / BROWN
If you guys have better one, suggest me! Thanks!  notworthy.gif
*
a) lots of complaint on buggy wireless performance.
b) This is using AMD E series (an old one as well, newer is E2-1800) CPU, which is about Intel Atom level of performance (like Netbook). Battery performance is good, but make sure you are ok with the overall CPU / GPU performance.
c) not bad
d) Not the best in terms of battery performance.

Suggestion:
Acer 14"
V5-471P, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000 + (1366x768; touch)@RM1899, 4GB, 500GB, W8

Asus 14"
K46CM-WX059V, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD

Dell 13"
Vostro 3360, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM2009[1.67kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB; colors: red/silver/bronze (not sexy, but screen is matte (good for outdoor), and warranty is good)
14"
Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1799[1.87kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB/W8, *no VGA port, OD

Lenovo
S400, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.8kg], 4GB, W7HB; W8@RM2199

Price is RSP, negotiable.
Generally, Intel HD 4000 will make presentation run smoother than HD3000 and below (hence the i3/i5-3xxxU CPU).
Intel B9xx actually is running at 35W, which is more power hungry than i3/i5-3xxxU which is running at 17W.
If you want the absolute best in battery performance, then Intel Atom or AMD E series is your best bet, but these are normally found in smaller form factor (12.5" or below).
Since you travel and do presentation, make sure the laptop you get have the neccesary VGA port for older projector models or you will need a port converter to be safe.

When you said 1080p movies, do you mean the screen of the laptop has to display it, or you are going to connect the laptop to an external display / TV that can show 1080p?
Below RM2k, there is no laptop with FHD (1920x1080) (1080p) display screen.

Maybe I need to make myself clearer smile.gif All current gen laptop can "play" 1080p movies. The issue is whether the laptop has the screen to "show" the 1080p. Laptops at your budget don't have the screen to show the 1080p, you need to connect it to an external display or a TV that can "show" 1080p (normally through HDMI cable).

About the sound "card". The chipset for sound processing in most laptop models are pretty consistent right now.
And laptop speakers generally is not good, a ~RM100 desktop speaker can give you much better sound. So what you need to do is to connect the laptop to a good set of speakers for good sound smile.gif

Anyway, please follow the format stated in the 1st page so that the sifus can recommend you easier

Btw, would you care to share your ThinkPad model and specs?
I am really curios since all my colleagues always tell my our office issued Thinkpad run a lot cooler than whatever personal laptops they have at home laugh.gif
If it has been a year, may be it is because the vents are clog with dust, which lead to limited airflow to the heatsink and the excessive heat. Anyway, if it is still under warranty, call Lenovo and get them to fix it (Thinkpad normally come with onsite warranty, I hope yours is smile.gif )

hi and hello,
which is better, buy malaysian laptop model or us?
and, can i ask why?
thank you

You have more choices (in terms of models, brands) buying from US. Most brands sell online, and specs are customisable.

Not all the brands in Malaysia, and for the brands that is in Malaysia, not all the models are brought in. Specs (other than Dell) are fixed (unless you are big corp clients who order customised specs model in large volume).

If you plan to use the laptop in Malaysia, however, your biggest concern if you buy from US is whether there are warranty support services in Malaysia.
If the brands is not in Malaysia, you are not covered.
You are not covered even if the brands is in Malaysia, but the models does not offer international warranty.
Even if the models come with international warranty, if you buy it from reseller (instead of directly from brands) and you could not produce a receipt from the brand, the local warranty supports may refuse to grant service. This largely depends on the terms and conditions of the warranty, and how you play the Malaysia warranty support personnel smile.gif
Even if you get the warranty services in Malaysia, if the models or its components is rare in Malaysia, the support centre may take times to get the spare parts.

Hi guys, I'm not sure where else to post this so I hope someone can answer here or guide me to where I can get my question answered.

I accidentally banged my laptop and I THINK that the HDD is damaged in some way. It takes ~15mins to boot and shut down, and while shutting down or attempting to defrag, BSOD sometimes comes out. But after booting and started up everything works fine.

My question is how much is the cost to repair or replace the HDD? Where can I do it?
*
If your laptop is still under warranty, I strongly suggest you get the laptop check by technician.
In the mean time, back up all your data as soon as you can.
If the HDD has problem, stop attempting to "defrag" or do anything HDD intensive, you just make it worse.

~i will bring it to oversea, after 2 years, will come back here, so wanna ask for your recommendation whether to buy us model or malaysia model?
thank you

Don't mister me lah, sound so old laugh.gif

If you are going to study in US, the best choice (in my opinion) is buying in US after you touch down nod.gif
Much better consumer protection (great return policy, make sure you understand the terms and conditions smile.gif ), you also get better warranty support (than Malaysia) generally, more choices, etc.
Also in US, brands and stores sometimes run some crazy discount that we in Malaysia can only dream about (e.g. Black Friday)

You can start doing research on the models you like online. Most brands sell online in US. You can also check out sites such as Newegg, Amazon (make sure you have a credit card) ... . Even physical stores such as Walmart sometime has decent deals smile.gif

By the time you want to come back, just sell it off laugh.gif
