Among all the choices, which 1 is better in hardcore gaming?I don't mind topup abit to get better performances

Any of those with GT650M.
The Lenovo is particularly good since the GT650M come with GDDR5 VRAM.

Price is RSP, negotiable. At your budget, GT650M is the best GPU you could get. If you top up a bit, you could get this:
Lenovo 15"
Ideapad Y580, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GTX660M + 1920x1080 @RM2999[JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB/W8, backlit keyboard, 2 yrs warranty

Anything above GTX660M, you are looking at > RM4k.

Yes, all come with DVD ODD.
I suggest you go out and touch and feel the real thing (screen, keyboard, touch pad, carry it ... )
You may have "slight" difficulty finding Y480 since re-sellers prefer to stock Y400 now tongue.gif But it is still available.

Hi guys, need help to find laptop

1. Preferred Brand: Any
2. Budget: 1.5k
3. Usage: MS Office, presentation and adobe illustrator
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: Any

Ultrabook could be a plus for travelling ...
*
Ultrabook at your budget is "difficult" sweat.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Depends on how extensively you use Adobe Illustrator, laptops with Intel HD 4000 IGPU may be fine, or you may need some discrete GPU (Nvidia / AMD).

Some conventional laptop for your consideration:
Dell 14"
Inspiron 14, i3-3110M + Intel HD4000@RM1399[2.1kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8

HP 14"
Pavilion G4-2110TU, i3-3110M + Intel HD4000@RM1599, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HP

Lenovo 14"
G480, i3-3110M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB (5400rpm), FreeDOS

Some ultrabook that is near your budget for your consideration:
Acer 13"
Aspire S3-391-33214G52s, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000 + 20GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM1999, 4GB, W8

Asus 14"
K46CM-WX060V, B987 + Nvidia GT630M@RM1799[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
K46CM-WX059V, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD

Dell 14"
Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1799[1.87kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, *no VGA port, OD

Lenovo 14"
S400, i3-2365M + AMD HD7450M@RM1699[1.8kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB (this use the older 2nd gen iCore CPU)

Price is RSP, negotiable (a little bit for budget line).

Hi everyone! I need advice on good laptops. Here's my requirements:

1. Brands - None
2. Budget - Below RM3,000 (but will consider going up to RM3,500 if necessary)
3. Usage - Programming work, photo/media editing and gaming.
4. Screen - 15" and above, preferably 1080p resolution, non-glossy.

Other less important things:
5. HDD - At least 500mb Hard Disk space. A SSD Hybrid would be great too.
6. Weight - Does not matter.
7. Keyboard - layout and buttons somewhat matters but it's something I need to have a hands-on to get a feel of it.
8. OS - Preferably W8 for the REALLY quick bootup speed. Otherwise I can settle for W7.

There's one laptop I've found which I quite like - the ASUS N56VZ - (i7 3610QM, 15.6" 1080p, Nvidia GT650M) but I've not seen one with Windows 8 and a SSD hybrid HDD in retail stores (although their website seems to indicate it's availability). It has really sleek and nice body design but it's also on the pricier side at about RM3599. Can anyone recommend good alternatives based on these? Thanks in advanced! biggrin.gif

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Jan 4 2013, 11:58 AM)
One more for you to consider brows.gif
15.6"
Dell Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB,backlit keyboard optional, W7HP/W8

*try to extend warranty to 3 years if possible, it will come in handy since its a Dell ~
*
Or this one:
Dell
Vostro 3560, i7-3632QM + AMD HD7670M + 32GB SSD + 750GB(7200rpm) HDD + (1920x1080)@RM3209[2.57kg], 8GB, W7HB; colors: red/silver/bronze

These are the only 3 models in Malaysia that has 15"+ FHD anti-glare screen and within your budget ( < RM3.5k).
Anything else is > RM4k, most are > RM5k.

What is the difference between i5-3210M and i5-3317U? What is B&O?
*
i5-3210M is a Mobile processor. More powerful than i5-3317U, which is a ULV (ultra low voltage). But also consume more power (hence affect battery performance, ceteris paribus)
B&O - Bang & Olufsen, a brand.

HP Pavilion Sleekbook 14-b009TU

above 3 laptops look good in term of specs, may i ask which one should i go for. I m not a gamer, i m using laptop to do office works, ms apps, torrents downloading, adobe photo editing and so on. Please recommend me the one that suits my usage.

U310 & Sleekbook come with i3-3217U CPU and Intel HD 4000 IGPU.
V5 is only Pentium B987 & Intel HD.

Sleekbook is cheaper than U310.

U series has wireless connectivity issue.

Looking at the above, I think Sleekbook is a better choice among the three sweat.gif

Is is worth to get the ASUS with more money since it's only i5 while the Y series with i7 and better GT650(GDDR5)?
And is there a big difference between the Y series?Cant decide which is the bet for pure gaming, going to some shops and try soon

"Worth" encompass many subjective judgement biggrin.gif
Purely based on specs on paper, Y series give you more power for less money.
However, "worth", is influenced by aesthetic (colour, pattern, design ... ), personal feeling / preference, ... which only YOU can decide smile.gif
Already explain to you about Y series smile.gif Y400 is more bling, with option to expand GPU power later. Specs wise, Y480 & Y400 is the same. Go and see it and you will understand smile.gif

Hey guys, trying to find a laptop for my girlfriend who's studying multimedia.

1. Preferred Brand : Any reliable ones
2. Budget : <2k
3. Usage : Adobe products, minimum rendering, little to no gaming
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : Thickness <= 1 inch

She said that she wants a thin laptop and she's sick of slugging around her current laptop, which is quite thick. So I did some research on my own and settled on the HP ENVY 4-1053TX at first. But then when I checked the benchmarks for the processor, I realised that it was sub-par. So I started looking at other laptops in the price range and all of them now use the low powered CPUs. Now I'm stuck. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
*
The HP Envy 4 in your link is perfectly capable of doing the usage you describe smile.gif
You have to understand the "benchmark" and their methodology. The reported figures are average, ULV has wider range of High/Low.

Take i5-3210M vs i5-3317U. Both are Ivy Bridge, 2 core 4 thread same cache.
i5-3210M run at 35W, 2.5 GHz, turbo to 3.1 GHz (turbo by 24%)
i5-3317U run at 17W, 1.7 GHz, turbo to 2.6 GHz (turbo by 53%)
So obviously 3210M have more raw power than 3317U. But 3317U when under heavy load, could perform more or less like 3210M under normal load, so 3317U is no slouch either (of course whether the CPU can sustain turbo mode also depends on the temp, so you need to make sure to keep the laptop cool).

2.5 / 1.7 - 1 = 47%
3.1 / 2.6 - 1 = 19%
(2.5 + 3.1) / (1.7 + 2.6) - 1 = 30%

And slim laptop has less space to dissipate heat, you will why understand brand opt for the 17W ULV.

Hi all, hope some sifu can recommend some good laptop.
1. Preferred Brand: None
2. Budget: Below 2.5k
3. Usage: Some gaming (no need high quality, low quality also can), Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14"-15''

I saw some sifu recommend this:
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8

But that day my eye cross over this one (price in this link incorrect)
http://www.thundermatch.com.my/hp-pavilion-g4-2111tx
HP-Pavilion-G4-2111TX, i7-3612QM + AMD HD7670M @RM2299[3.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, W7 Home Premium.

Any suggestion on this?

Thanks.  smile.gif
*
The i7 in the G4 overpower the i5 in A45VS, but your usage don't really need i7 quad core smile.gif
the GT645M in A45VS overpower the HD7670M in G4, and you need every ounce of GPU power you can get smile.gif
So between these, the A45VS is a better choice, since you are spending money on component that make a difference.

But the best for you is this laugh.gif
Lenovo
Y480, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M (GDDR5) @RM2599 [JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, freeDOS

Prices listed here are RSP, negotiable. You should be getting better deal than list price thumbup.gif

Oh yeah I was also looking at Dell Inspiron 15R. Specs and pricing are quite good. Only thing that's holding me back is the GPU. How's the gaming quality on that laptop? Also, I'm wondering if that ASUS model has customization options? I can't seem to find any info about that.

Yup, brands like to stick glossy screen in cheap consumer line laptops sweat.gif

Asus Malaysia don't offer customisation options. Take it or leave it tongue.gif You can do after market upgrade youself for RAM, HDD to SSD without voiding warranty laugh.gif

The GT650M is ~ 20-40% faster than the HD7730M, depends on game titles / setting tongue.gif

And the XPS 13 we have in mind, your aunt will not be able to get 3 years warranty within her budget tongue.gif (~ RM3.7k, with standard 1 year warranty ~ RM3.3k), but it is a very good laptop smile.gif

Wow, never knew that Gigabyte even made laptops. It's okay, thanks anyway biggrin.gif

Thanks for the tips! Guess the processor isn't a problem anymore =) the only thing I'm worried about now is that graphics card that comes with it. Apparently a lot of people are having trouble trying to force programs to run using the dedicated graphics card instead of the integrated one. Ever heard of these issues before?
*
AMD Enduro is not as mature as Nvidia Optimus, but it has gotten a lot better with new driver released.
Even if the driver does not auto-switch to the AMD GPU, you could actually force it by going into the driver interface and select the program that you run and default it to use AMD GPU.

Guys, just wanna ask your personal preference(I am quite the type of guy that is indecisive)
Illegear RS-17
Alienware M17X R4

Which one would you guys pick? smile.gif

errr ... I thought mommy said no to Illegear? laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

For me personally, I would go for RX-17 smile.gif (which is about the same price as M17x R4) since I care more about brute power than bling bling laugh.gif Also Illegear is running promotion now ....

Hi everyone,
I'm struggling on choosing which laptop to buy, so hope everyone can give me some suggestion

1. Preferred Brand: None
2. Budget: 3 to 4k
3. Usage: Multimedia, using heavy software like autodesk maya, 3ds max and z brush, adobe also, and must be able to play some graphic game in middle setting.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 15.6''
Specs Preferred:
15.6' FHD display (matte surface preferred)
3rd Gen Intel Core I7
8GB DDR3 Ram
750GB to 1TB HDD (with a little SSD will also come in handy)
Nvidia Graphic Card 2GB (either GT650M or GTX660M is fine)(GDDR3 or 5 is fine, but prefer 5 la)
and not to mention, as lighweight as possible.

After i did some research, i found out that these 3 machine more or less suits my preference,
Asus N56vz (Highest Spec Available in MY)
-4GB ram, need to add 4 more myself but sound is good, and the design is the best among my 3 choices (I think la... and the screen is gloss or matte?)

Lenovo Ideapad Y580 (Highest Spec Available in MY)
-Heaviest and not so attracting design (no offence)notworthy.gif but cheapest among the 3, is the cooling good?

Msi GE60 OND (Highest Spec Available in MY)
-most ideal among the 3, with all specs i preferred, and lightest too... but not too like the design, and how is msi's after sale services and warranty?

so which one would you guys prefer or any other laptop suggestion? ( maybe i missed out some godlike machine with price of Y580, Design of N56vz, and Spec of GE60?)

You did not miss much laugh.gif
Asus
N56VZ-S4284H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 1TB, W8; color: black (screen is matte)
G55VW-S1216H, i7-3610QM +Nvidia GTX660M (2GB) + (1920x1080)@3999[3.78kg], 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8 (a gaming laptop, good build quality, but very heavy)

Lenovo Y580 is glossy screen.

MSI
GE60, i7-3610QM + Nvidia GTX660M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + Bluray@RM4199, 8GB, 1TB(7200rpm), W7HP, 2 years warranty, gaming mouse & backpack, Free SteelSeries QCK Mass mousepad (Nope, I don't think this is lighter than N56VZ. It's skinny, and tend to heat up under load)

If you really want 15" FHD matte screen, within your budget, there are 2 more choices. But they are considered "ugly" by most laugh.gif
Dell
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB,backlit keyboard optional, W7HP/W8

hi guys.
it has been a long time i use my old laptop and never got replace.
i am looking for nice laptop as below:

1. Preferred Brand: anything will do except Lenovo since its bulky
2. Budget: Range RM2k - RM2.5k
3. Usage: mild gaming, entertainment, watching movies, mild engineering works
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 12" - 14"
5. Others: backlit keyboard, dont want Intel graphic, preferably less hot graphic card  tongue.gif
*
Lenovo has some slim laptop now like S series, U series smile.gif
Intel HD4000 is the least "hot" IGPU (most energy efficient). Any discrete graphic card from Nvidia / AMD is going to run "hotter".
Engineering work? What type of software? Do they require some 3D graphic rendering? If yes, you need slightly powerful GPU.
Is minimum downtime important for you? (work involved) Or you have other machine that you can fall back on? Some brand offer next business day on site warranty service (Dell, Lenovo)

Price is RSP, negotiable. Don't concern too much with HDD capacity and RAM, you can easily arrange with re-seller to upgrade them without voiding warranty, and they are cheap now (upgrade from 500G to 1TB ~ RM100, 4G RAM stick ~ RM80).

Powerful components generate lots of heat laugh.gif
Please get good external cooling solution.

Lenovo is quite popular now actually (They ship the most laptop globally, you know smile.gif ). Not all re-sellers who carry Lenovo are listed on Lenovo website. Just go to computer shops around your area to check them out.
Alternatively, you can check LYN garage sales forum for reputable re-sellers. Some of them could be around Perak, some of them actually do postage delivery.
Anyway, make sure you look at the real thing first.

Nvidia GT635M, Nvidia GT645M and Nvidia GT650M, do these three make a huge difference? Can I still play Fifa13 on high settings or any other games which requires high settings?
*
Yes, there is quite a big difference between GT650M, GT645M, and GT635M.
But FIFA13 is not GPU demanding laugh.gif So all three GPU can handle it at the highest setting.
As for other games which you may play in the future, it really depends on how GPU demanding they are going to be smile.gif
Obviously, the more powerful a GPU you buy now, the more likely it is going to be future proof smile.gif
Supposed you decide to play Far Cry 3, at 1366x768 resolution, high setting, only GT650M will cut it (around 30 fps I think).

5. I actually considered MBA and MBP as well but im afraid that office files from other students cant be open at my mac. Will there be such problems?

2. I think you should be more worried about how many RAM slots there are within an ultrabook since some only have one slot iinm... and some have their RAM soldered (thus irremovable) =.=
5. Yeah, there will be program and hardware incompatibility problems, unless if all your friends are using Macs...

2. The cache memory is built in memory in the chipset, has nothing to do with the RAM that we normally talk about. TJ is right, pay attention to RAM slot available if you intend to upgrade RAM.

5. If you run into a Apple aficionados, they will tell you MBA / MBP can run Windows through BootCamp laugh.gif

Hi,

I need suggestion on ultrabook. Do I need to go i 7? or just i 5 will do?

Brand: any.
Budget: below 5k.
Usage:  office work.
weight: light (need to carry everywhere)
screen: below 14'
Requirements: SSD.

With your budget, you could max out to i7. But i7-3517U is also only 2 core like i5-3317U, and for office work i5-3317U is enough. The problem is if you want a larger capacity SSD (256G) direct from factory, it usually come with i7 (unless you go Dell, which you could customise spec).

For work, if minimum down time is important, go with Dell since they offer next business day on site warranty support service.

Some ultrabook for you to consider:
Acer
Aspire S5-391-53314G12, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3499[1.2kg], W7HP

Personally, I would go for Dell XPS13, i5, 256G SSD, upgrade warranty to 3 years. Peace of mind, with relatively good keyboard among ultrabook, quite solid build.
