Preferred brand: ASUS or LENOVO
Budget: Below RM1999
Usage: Presentation, video, music, internet, casual gaming
Screen size: 13.3" or 14"
Preferred laptop: What I need is real Portability! Because I do always on outdoor/travel all the time so I need some light weight & long battery life. I have some choice on my list but need some suggestion from Sifus around here!

If you guys have better one, suggest me! Thanks!  notworthy.gif

Thanks for suggestion, then after I Google-ed around the internet, I found some better one and more suit my type.

Asus UX32VD VS Lenovo U410
But I still need what about your thought/opinion of these 2 model? and what if I raise my budget to around RM2,500.

Or if there any others similar to this model, so I might look into it? Thank you Sifu nexus2238notworthy.gif

Asus
UX32VD-R3001H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD@RM2999[1.45kg], 4GB, W8
If you can get it at RM2.5k, you are a damn ace negotiator thumbup.gif
U410 has the same issue as U310, there are lots of complaint on wireless connectivity performance.

Suggestion (other than those mentioned earlier):

haha sorry mate, sweat.gif

by the way im not going western but eastern, (so just buy us model or local model??) blink.gif
so im coming back after 2 years,
but, does local model has international warranty?
thank you
*
Care to share exactly which country you are going? biggrin.gif
Eastern? Japan, Taiwan, China, Korea .... ? (One thing you may have to consider is the keyboard for the language characters set)

Yes, some models being sold in Malaysia carry International Warranty (some standard, some you have to upgrade). However, you still need to make sure the warranty support is ok for the brand at the country you are going.
So, the general principle is you have more choice buying at the country you are going since you are not limited by having to look for models in Malaysia that carry International Warranty.

Anyway, give us more details, country you are going, course you are going to study, etc, so that the sifus could provide more relevant opinions smile.gif

Oh really?  shocking.gif

Just found out:
Lenovo S400, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.8kg], 4GB, W7HB; W8@RM2199
is it better than Lenovo U410?
*
S400 only has HD4000, U410 has a discrete GPU (but not a powerful one at that). If you have the chance to physically compare the two models side by side, you will realise why the U410 is more expensive smile.gif (S400 is very budget feel smile.gif )But the wireless issue in U series is a killer.

Dear Sifu nexus2238,

I think stick back the 2 of models which recommended by you.
It seems to be hard choice to choose either one of those two above. Both price are almost the same.
Few question here:
1) K46CM-WX090H seems to be top-up RM300(RM2199) just for the i5-3317U, do you think worth it? (I saw it in Asus catalog)
2) 2GB DDR3 RAM can be upgrade to higher?
1) I saw the brochure seems to be having AMD Radeon™ HD 7450M Graphics with 1GB VRAM right? What is the RRP?
2) 4GB DDR3 RAM can be upgrade to higher too?
3) So this don't come with the OD?
*
S400
S400, i3-2365M + AMD HD7450M@RM1699[1.8kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB
S400, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.8kg], 4GB, W7HB; W8@RM2199
The spec that have the AMD HD7450 unfortunately come with sandy bridge i3 M CPU (older and more power hungry). Also without the mSata SSD for caching.
No, S400 don't have ODD. Also no Kensington lock, if that is important to you sweat.gif
No, 4G RAM is the max. You can't upgrade to more RAM.

K46
K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
K46CM-WX059V, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD
The main difference between the i5U and i3U is i5U has Turbo mode (CPU can ramp up to higher GHz under load).
If you are in a situation where the GT635M kick in, you will appreciate the i5 Turbo model smile.gif
There is 2 RAM slot in K46CM. One is used by the 2G stock RAM, so you have 1 slot available (unless the reseller willing to trade in). A 4G RAM stick cost ~RM80.

Btw, don't just compare specs on paper. Go and touch and feel the laptop. Things such as keyboard / touchpad feel, aesthetics is very subjective. My opinion is K46 has better built than S400, and has better value consider the spec (but the S400 mSata SSD does improve responsiveness). But then you have to think about Asus Malaysia warranty service sweat.gif

Lenovo Malaysia don't provide customisation service. So the short answer is No.
Long answer, grey import (but you need to deal with warranty support caveat).

Sadly no longer under warranty. What are my options? Replace the HDD? Should I try to reformat and see if that works? My friend thinks it might be a software issue, because my laptop was on sleep when it was hit, so he thinks some data might've been screwed up as the HDD was still running.
*
Laptop is rather fragile sweat.gif Care to describe "the hit"? A drop, how high? A bang, at what speed?
It does not matter whether the laptop is on sleep mode or totally shut down, a drop from enough height could damage HDD and/or other components regardless.
Anyway it is hard for all the sifus to do "remote diagnosis" like this unless you could provide more details, any weird spinning sounds, anything particular before BSOD show up, ....
Even if the laptop is out of warranty, you could still send to the brand service centre and ask the technician to do a diagnosis for you. They may charge labours and parts for repair after quoting you.
Alternatively, bring your laptop to a repair shop. Some of them are nice enough to help you diagnose the problem for free, some may charge a minimum fee.
But as I said, back up all your important data asap.

1. Preferred Brand - Dell/Any (as long as there's good after sales service)
2. Budget - RM2-3k
3. Usage - college work (writing codes, VMware, etc), watching vids(720p-1080p quality), mild gaming(RPG).
4. Preferred Laptop/Screen Size - 14-15", doesnt need to be touchscreen, im not interested in W8..

currently looking at the Inspiron 14R SE, would that be a good value for money?
or care to share what should i get from your experiences?

thanks in advance and,
sorry for any inconvenience. smile.gif

was wondering if i could get another recommendation,
but this time for an Ultrabook. i'd just want some broader options.

1. Preferred Brand - any with good after sales service
2. Budget - <= 3k
3. Usage - College work (mid-heavy usage)
4. Preferred Laptop/Screen Size - 13-14"

1. It depends on what is considered "good" after sales service for you laugh.gif Some of us are so deprived of services, if we can get our laptop back within 2 weeks after sending in to service centre, we are literally saying halleluva laugh.gif
Anyway, in Malaysia, for consumer line, no other brands is at Dell level yet in term of warranty support services. Lenovo start to offer on site service as well (but not standard, have to pay more to upgrade. I took it when I bought Y580 this year. Have used Thinkpad (different class of machine) for long time where onsite service is standard). Other brands mostly still require you to send to service centre. HP, from users feedback, stick to its projected timeline for repair.

You generally get less power for the same amount of money moving from general laptop to ultrabook tongue.gif

Wow smile.gif
Not familiar with the IT scene in Egypt, sorry.
I supposed the language is Arabic? In that case, keyboard characters layout may still be a relevant consideration.
I know 1 Egyptian Pound is about RM0.50 now.

Just did a quick search:
http://computershopegypt.com/
If this website is indeed representative of the type of price level for laptop in Egypt, then it is cheaper for you to buy in Malayisa or from US.

My suggestion is this:
Go to the US website for the big laptop brands, e.g. Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo.
Chat with the sales agent on those website (the reason you ask the sites in US is because they are generally more knowledgable / easier to get answer on this than resellers in Malaysia).
What you want to find out is if the brand has a international warranty support service in Egypt. If yes, what level of support? Eg. Send to service centre with receipt (where is the service centre, is it near your campus / dorm?), onsite service (how to contact)? How much for say 3 years Internationl Warranty?
Once you have these information, then you can decide whether to get it from US or from Malaysia.
For example, Asus models sold in Malaysia come with 2 years International Warranty standard unless specified otherwise. So if Asus has pretty good service in Egypt, might as well buy in Malaysia.
Dell, on the other hand, offer local onsite service pretty much in all the markets it operate. But International Warranty don't come standard. But if you intend to bring the laptop back to Malaysia after you finish your studies, then you may want to consider buying in Malaysia, and pay Dell more to upgrade to 3 years International Warranty (if Dell confirm in Egypt you also will get onsite service, for example).

Sorry I could not be of more help, and can only suggest you to do some leg work sweat.gif Hope other sifus here have better ideas or comments.

p/s: Btw, I used to see local guy use a Dell laptop with Arabic keyboard, very unique (I mean in Malaysia laugh.gif ).

Depends on what you mean by "light gaming", the following only has Intel HD 4000 IGPU, which can handle "light gaming" in some people definition smile.gif

i thought of having a go with the ultrabook due to it being "lighter" and maybe cheaper (at a cost of having minimal decency performance).
but I might as well go with the general laptops ar..

was wondering how do you guys bargain with the online sales person from Dell?
any tips on how to ayat/sweet talk them?

3. Usage - college usage, gaming
4. Preferred Laptop/Screen Size - 14'' or 15.6''

I heard that i7 4th generation is coming nxt year? Should I wait for it ?

Yes, Intel practically launch a new gen of CPU every year smile.gif The new Haswell line i-core (i7/5/3) is expected to be launched some time in 2Q13, but you normally have to wait a few more months for brands to launch their model.
In terms of raw CPU power, Haswell is not expected to raise the game from Ivy Bridge by much (talk of 5 - 10%). But there are high hope for lower power consumption over the whole platform, and much better IGPU than the current HD 4000 (all good for longer battery performance).
So if you are looking to buy a laptop some time in say June 2013 and can wait a bit, may be it's worth while to wait for Haswell.
Otherwise, just buy the best you can get now and enjoy smile.gif

The unfortunate part is that currently 13.3" is dominate by expensive model. Even for brands that traditionally have good presence in < RM1.5k market, their 13.3" start at RM1.8k++, and the spec is not good.
Acer Aspire S3-391-33214G52s, i3-3217M + Intel HD3000 + 20GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM1999, 4GB, W8
Dell Vostro 3360, i3-2365M + Intel HD3000@RM1859[1.67kg], 4GB, 320GB(5400rpm), W7HB; colors: red/silver/bronze

Your closest bet actually is a 14"
Lenovo S400, i3-2365M + AMD HD7450M@RM1699[1.8kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB (CPU is 2nd gen (sandy bridge) i-core)

If you want thin and light, get your budget to around RM2.0k, then there are some compelling case. Otherwise you may need to look at 11" Netbook (and god forbid us running Excel on those thing sweat.gif ) icon_rolleyes.gif

Hye guys!i need some suggestion/input of what laptop to get from fellow gurus here in LYN.Here goes..

1. Preferred Brand = Lenovo or Dell, mainly because i heard that their quality/price/performance and after sales service/warranty is very good. but i'm open to any other suggestion if you can justify the choice of it i'll be glad to hear it.

2. Budget = my budget is RM3k max.this could/should also include extended warranty if you guys feel necessary to suggest me to add-on on top of the laptop price.

3. Usage = i'll be using it mainly for Autocad,3dmax,sketchup,photoshop and such. having a good battery life should also be an added bonus too.

4. Preferred laptop/screen size = 15"> above.

thanks!
*
3&4. 15" and above, running the apps you want, generally don't come together with good battery performance laugh.gif

The idea is you need powerful CPU (i7-3xxxQM), reasonably good GPU for rendering 3D, and FHD (1920x1080) for maximum workspace.

Lenovo
Ideapad Y580, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GTX660M + 1920x1080 @RM2999[JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB/W8, backlit keyboard, 2 yrs warranty
Dell
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB,backlit keyboard optional, W7HP/W8

Price is RSP, negotiable. Extend warranty to 3 years on site (both brands has this option). Should be within your budget.

Y580 has more powerful GPU, 15R SE has matte screen.

There is a good discussion recently on this thread: (the TS don't use 3dmax, but otherwise his buying choice is similar to yours)

What I see between the S400 and K46CM is, with the almost same price, K46CM give better spec and better feature.
I think I might just stick with Asus K46CM model, since I do often do some light design on Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop. Now is just have to figure out either getting the i5 or the i3 model only which just RM300 different, and then add 4gb to become 6gb ram.
Asus K46CM have better audio system than the Lenovo S400 right?

1. Preferred Brand - Lenovo
2. Budget - RM2300 ( Include SSD)
3. Usage - Internet, Mild gaming such as Football Manager 2013, Assassin Creed 3, Photo Editing.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14 - 15 inches.

Remarks: I would like to get a laptop that is able to change the exitsting harddisk to SSD drive by myself. I also would prefer to have lighter laptop. Thanks
*
To play Assassin Creed 3 in HD (1366x768) resolution reasonably well, the GPU need something like GT640M level. 128G SSD cost ~RM250++, 256G ~RM500++, depending on brands and models.

You can practically change the HDD to SSD for all laptop models smile.gif (unless the laptop is very thin, then you need to find the SSD with the right form factor, but those thin laptop normally already come with SSD smile.gif )

The closest:
14"
Z480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M@RM2299, 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm) W7HB, colors: grey/red/blue
G480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS
G480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1899, 4GB, 1TB (5400rpm), W8, 2 yrs warranty
15"
Ideapad Z580, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M@RM2299, 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W7HB, white

Price is RSP, negotiable.

4. Preferred Laptop Screen Size: 14-15.6 inches.

I'm also a sucker for LED backlit keyboard. Laptops I'm currently looking at is the Dell Inspiron 14 and 14R, Lenovo G480. Any recommendations on which one will offer the best support and value for money? The Lenovo comes with GT635M which tops the Dell if I'm looking at value for money. This one:

Negotiate a bit with Dell, you can get it at RM2k with 2/3 years onsite warranty.

4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 13 or 14 .

I prefer ultrabook, hopefully those less than 2kg. Preferably those with i5, at least.

3. What FPS games title? Quite big variance in terms of system requirement from one to another smile.gif Ultrabook with only Intel HD 4000 can only play some games at low setting smile.gif

To fully satisfy your requirement, the closest:

Asus 13"
UX32VD-R3001H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD@RM2999[1.45kg], 4GB, W8 (upgrade the HDD to SSD yourself, but then the mSATA SSD become a waste unless you wade into BIOS to change the setting)

Dell 13"
XPS13, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3299[1.36kg], 4GB, W8, backlit (IGPU under power, may not be able to play your games)

The only model in Malaysia that fit your requirement with stock spec is actually this:
Acer

No problem.

Now, with your budget, you may want to consider MacBook Pro 15" (non Retina Display). But I don't know what type of "work" you do, so you need to make sure you can run your software in OSX.

GE60, i7-3610QM + Nvidia GTX660M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + Bluray@RM4199, 8GB, 1TB(7200rpm), W7HP, 2 years warranty, gaming mouse & backpack, Free SteelSeries QCK Mass mousepad
(Again, gaming laptop, but also good for multimedia usage)

All the 15" listed here (except Dell Vostro) has built-in dedicated numerical keypad in the keyboard.
For SSD, you don't have much choice (other than MBP 15") for model that come with stock SSD. Anyway, the brand charge a bomb (just look at the difference in MBP 15" for 128G vs 256G SSD). It may be more worthwhile for you to get a SSD yourself and ask the re-seller to swap it in for you (you may keep the HDD as external HDD for higher capacity storage). 128G SSD is ~ RM250++, 256G ~ RM500++, 512G ~ RM1.2k++ depends on brands / models.

M5-481PTG-53316G52, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT640M + 20GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2999, 10-point touch, W8

Stock spec wise, M5 with the 128G SSD win.
Value wise, K45CM, you can buy a 256G SSD and swap it in yourself, buy another 4G RAM for the same price (or less). You get larger SSD, but slightly less powerful GPU.

my question was missed,so reposting...

1. Preferred Brand - Lenovo , DELL, Asus
2. Budget - around RM3000 (has SSD)
3. Usage - Internet, Photo Editing, normal FPS games
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 13 or 14 .

I prefer ultrabook, hopefully those less than 2kg. Preferably those with i5, at least.

thanks!
